Lack of extras on the DVD UK version pushes people towards piracy
The localized version of the Star Wars The Force Awakens DVD UK release seems to be lacking on extras. There are no deleted scenes and the documentary Secrets of the Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey is also not included. Independent and Mirror share a few quotes from outraged customers and fans of the Saga, who paid the 5 pounds to own the DVD.
I was really looking forward to this: I don’t have a Blu-ray player, so was intending to use the digital download key provided to get the movie online.
But [there is] no digital download with the UK version: the US version has this. Completely unacceptable and I can’t think of a better way of driving people who WANT to buy a legitimate version to piracy sites. Idiots.
Most outlets have yet to explicitly state the DVD release doesn’t feature the bonus material, with many fans feeling misled after all the promotion surrounding the bonus scenes.
Disney’s answer to a Guardian reporter was:
As a company we are committed to seeking out the best ways to provide audiences with access to Disney content. Each territory is different, and we evaluate and enact distribution strategies on a market-by-market basis. In the UK this means we do not include extras across our DVD products.
“Our Blu-ray and digital download offerings for The Force Awakensare providing audiences with a wealth of extras including a special documentary, behind-the-scenes looks and much more that are now being enjoyed by thousands.
In the end I would like to quote one of the comments under the Independent article that I used as a source for this post: “Disney… They don’t have fans, they have customers.” Well, it’s true! :)
