Make your own Kylo Ren Costume Gorget from Star Wars Episode VII

Sewing skills, a bit of leather and Star Wars obsession is all you need

In Episode VII Star Wars: The Force Awakens of the great saga we meet a new villain – Kylo Ren. He leaves an immediate mark on us, the fans with 3 major things – his behavior, his personal history and most of all – his appearance.

Star Wars Kylo Ren Costume GorgetWell, we’ve learned all we could already about the Crossguard lightsaber and the crystal Kylo put in it in my Unstable Color Crystals and the Kylo Ren Lightsaber  video. The sword is awesome, we all admit it. However, today I would like to show you another video – How to make the Gorget that surrounds Kylo’s neck.

Adam Savage, the ex-host of National Geographic’s TV show “Myth Busters”, has created a detailed video of how it is done. Here are the basic steps, and the video is linked below.

To make your own Kylo Ren Costume Gorget you need light weighted black leather, decent sewing skills and good measurement. You start by cutting the 2 major pieces for the Gorget – the upper part, which is for the collar and the bottom part, which stands on your shoulders. The next step would be to cut narrow and uneven pieces of leather to wrap around the collar, starting from the top towards the bottom.

Sewing is the focus of this week’s One Day Build, as Adam works on a piece of his in-progress Kylo Ren cosplay by making the costume’s gorget. Adam talks about finding the reference and design for this leather neck piece, demonstrates patterning, and gets to work at his sewing station!

In the video Adam mentions he is creating the whole costume. Let’s hope the rest of the parts will be shown in other videos as well. I personally enjoy watching all of Adam Savage’s One Day Builds and this one certainly did not disappoint! Plus, IT’S ABOUT STAR WARS!
