Arrow series finale: 8 years in the making

The Arrow series finale aired on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 and yes, I have shed a few tears over Oliver’s funeral but even bigger tears when I saw who all came to the funeral.

It wasn’t just Barry Allen / The Flash and Kara Danvers / Supergirl but so many more from the past. We saw Tommy, Moira, Thea and last but not least, Felicity visits the Arrowcave.

Through Flashbacks we saw Arrow in early incarnations where he was still a stone cold killer. With Oliver dead, Team Arrow disbands and decide that because Star City is safe now, it is time to put justice in cities that need it.

Arrow’s legacy

Throughout the episode, the friends who Oliver left behind when he sacrificed himself for the greater good, talk about the mission to keep Star City safe and the effect he had on them. All of his friends agree that Oliver’s passionate crusade against crime in Star City. They will never forget him.

Ofcourse, Team Arrow can’t call it quits and for the last time everyone suits up because young William has been kidnapped by a John Byrne, a member of the Undertaking who was spared by Arrow in a flashback. Byrne tries to take revenge by killing William and he has nothing left to lose. Until the new Green Arrow catches him and she talks him out of killing Byrne. It shows that Katharine McNamara is a great successor of Stephen Amell as the new Arrow.

I wonder if John Byrne was a reference to the comicbook artist / writer John Byrne.

The ramifications of Oliver’s decisions in Crisis on Infinite Earths

The best part was Team Arrow in action and also ALL the heroes who showed up at the funeral. All the flashbacks with all keypoints in the story of Oliver from beginning to end. But it also marked all the changes he made when he created a new earth on Crisis on Infinite Earths. The rammifications of his decisions will be worked out on all the Arrowverse shows and maybe even the ones that aren’t set in the Arrowverse. Like Titans and Doom Patrol.

But so far we have seen what Oliver has done with the Arrowverse shows through Batwoman, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning. Some things are reversed, some things are written out and some things were gone but are slowly added back to the show. Like Beth returning and now Batwoman has to deal with both Alice and her counter earth part Beth.

Supergirl is dealing with a Lex Luthor who is now regarded a hero by the public but who secretly still has dealings with shady people, including sister Lena.

Black Lightning is dealing with his daughter’s murder of people before his earth got wiped out. Initially, the memory was erased but it somehow got readded.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are suddenly big in Japan.

However you put it, Oliver’s fingerprints are all over the new Arrowverse and will be felt for many many seasons to come. That said, I hope that they will not have Barry or the Legends turn back the clock and bring Oliver back to life. It would undo ALL of the impact he has had with his sacrifice. Unless ofcourse, the new crossover is going to be Blackest Night.
