StarGirl renewed for season 2, turns CW exclusive

Manfred by Manfred|

StarGirl has been renewed for a second season but here is the twist: It is now a CW exclusive. The CW is also known as the DC Superhero TV show network since it is the home of the Arrowverse. The Arrowverse consists of The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and soon Superman & Lois. In the past the TV show Arrow was a big part of the Arrowverse, laying the very foundation of the TV show universe.

StarGirl TV show premise

Stargirl is played by Brecc Basinger who is Courtney Whitmore. A young teen who moves from Los Angeles to the countryside in Blue Valley, Nebraska. While she did not get along with her mum’s new husband Pat Dugan, played by Luke Wilson, he grew on her when she discovers that he holds a very powerful artifact , The cosmic staff. Formerly wielded by Starman.

She slowly but surely finds out that Pat Dugan was part of the Justice Society of America who fought their enema The Injustice Society. When Courtney moves to Nebraska she accidentally stumbles upon members of the Injustice Society like Sportsmaster and Brainwave. Though she beat Brainwave , the rest of the Injustice Society are still on the run and do not have the best interest at heart of Blue Valley or the world. It is up to Courtney to restart the Justice Society of America, who were killed at the hand of Icicle, leader of the Injustice Society.

With the help of her new friends , Wildcat, Hourman and Dr. Midnight and the assistance of Pat Dugan, who controls a giant robot named Stripesy , they are rebuilding The Justice Society of America under the leadership of Stargirl a.k.a. Courtney Whitmore.

Hope for the future

We are now seven episodes in and Stargirl already got renewed by The CW. And I have to say; Good move! The show is a mix of The Flash and Arrow. So dark as Arrow was but light as the Flash, where possible. It is that mix and the humor that gives the show heart. It is quite clear that the first season is an origins season, we get to see how the heroes and the villains are who they are and the characters are being fleshed out properly. At least the first steps of the characters.

However, I hope the cast doesn’t get too big. A team of 4 or 5 should be enough. I would love to have 7 or 8 but with The CW, you have a limited budget for special effects and that’s what worries me for the future of the show.

So far The Cosmic Staff and Stripesey are done beautifully and I really enjoy watching the fight choreography on the small screen but if the cast gets as big as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow it’d mean that some characters will barely get to show off their powers on screen. That has happened to Firestorm and The Atom on the show, Which is a shame because their powers are great and deserve screentime.

I do hope that they will do a crossover with the Arrowverse at some point, I believe that Stargirl is set in its’ own universe at the moment. But for a crossover like last year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, it would be great if they could actually teleport in some capacity to the help the heroes of the Arrowverse.

I mean, can you imagine Supergirl kicking ass with Stargirl or Wildcat fighting alongside the new Batwoman?

StarGirl renewed for season 2

Should Stargirl season 2 get a speedster?

What else do I hope for? I hope that we get to see the old Justice Society of America in flashbacks or since Dr Midnight’s goggles seems to store everything, that we get to see combat training via the goggles.

Since the old Justice Society of America also had their own Flash in the form of Jay Garrick, I would like to see a speedster on the show as well. Not to compete with The Flash or anything but just because it is always nice to have a speedster fighting on your side. The real question is, can they afford it? They can’t afford not to.

But what about that Green Lantern?

But then again, I also saw a Green Lantern and I really hope that Guy Gardner will come to town. We have seen Hal Jordan (yes, the movie we don’t talk about) and we have seen John Stewart on The Justice League cartoon series (highly recommended by me!!) so why not Guy Gardner this time? You’d also have your first teen gay superhero on the small screen. But also because he is just awesome.

So those are my thoughts on the renewal. And I really think that the success of the Stargirl 2nd season renewal depends on the size of the team and the budget they have available for the special effects.

Have you watched the StarGirl TV show? If yes, then let me know what you think of it. I am really curious about the show.
