When DCFandome was announced since San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) was canceled, I was excited. The first thing I watched last night was the panel of Wonder Woman who were all very enthused about the upcoming movie where everything is bigger and better. And ofcourse I believe that.
I went through all the trailers and announcements of movies and video games. The only thing that was lacking were comicbooks. Which I found odd because it is Detective COMICS and not Detective Movies… anyway, there are plenty of comics available and not enough movies or TV shows about the DC Universe, let me put it that way.
Wonder Woman 1984
Like I said, various trailers were released at the DCFandome event and one of them that just has to be mentioned here is the one of Wonder Woman. I enjoyed the first installment of the movie but it was a true origin story. Meaning that with an origin story the character has to be established first before you can go all out. I really missed that last part, I want the characters to go all out so that you can see what they can really do with their superpowers.
The panel of Wonder Woman consisted of at least Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and newcomer Pedro Pascal. The biggest question of Wonder Woman 1984 is of course: how did Chris Pine’s character Steve Trevor survive and still look that young? Did they pull off a Captain America and had him crash into the ice for so many years. Cap survived because of the supersoldier serum but how did Steve Trevor? Who knows, could just be his grandson…
The best part ofcourse is the new villain. The villain of Wonder Woman in this movie is called Cheetah and she is a twisted little sicko and wants to take away everything Wonder Woman stands for. At first I wasn’t sure if Kristen Wiig was a good choice, but that is mostly because I know her from the satirical TV show Saturday Night Live and Ghostbusters ofcourse. So all she has done is make me laugh. And now she is up for a big role as a serious villain. She does amazingly well. At least she has me convinced that she can carry her own weight based on the trailer.
The thing about Marvel movies is that most villains are pretty one dimensional. As a moviefan and a comicbookfan I am hoping that this is where DC movies will grab the opportunity and flesh out the villains. However if Justice League is any indication then I don’t expect them too. Too bad because the idea of having a Magneto , a fully developed 3D character as a villain, in a movie would be amazing.
The Batman trailer debuts at DCFandome
When we watched the Batman making his debut in the Batman vs Superman movie and then in The Justice League, I was sold. Ben Affleck, in my opinion, is the best Batman ever. That raunchy voice and then the big surprise was that he was going to have his own stand alone movie.
Unfortunately, those were all aircastles as Affleck exited the Batman project and the movie and script had to be rewritten.
The new casting of Batman turned out to be Robert Pattinson. So DC is going for a younger Batman. But what Batman could it possibly be. We have already had Year One in the form of Batman: Begins. We also already had The Dark Knight Returns in the form of Ben Affleck’s Batman so I am wondering what era of Batman they are going for.
Alas, I watched the trailer and I am not very convinced that Pattinson is the right man of the job. I am however a big fan of the new villain, a golden oldie: The Riddler! And we get to see Catwoman too. Although I am not sure if that’s a good choice. We just recently had a Catwoman played by Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises. If it were up to me I’d love to have Vicki Vale being cast again in a Batman movie. We haven’t seen her since 1989.
Anyway judge for yourself and let me know what you think Robert Pattinson cast as Batman. DCFandome seemed to be the best location to give us a good old teaser trailer.
Suicide Squad
When Suicide Squad was released back in 2016, I had high expectations. Back when the DC Movie Universe was still in its’ infancy and movies were experiments to see what would resonate with the audience.
The movie was hyped, Batman would make cameos, The Joker would be amazing, Harley Quinn just as wack as she is in The Animated Series and comics and Will Smith as Deadshot. I mean what could possibly go wrong? Well basically, everything. I had never seen a movie get panned by fans and critics so fast as this movie. And I sat through Howard the Duck in the 1980s…can you believe that?
Back to 2020, James Gunn of Guardian of The Galaxy fame got fired by Marvel and DC took Gunn in. And I wasn’t very happy because James Gunn played a pivotal role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But artists and writers also swap a lot in the comicbook world so I accepted it after a while.
If there is one thing Gunn does best is create ensembles so I was very happy with the casting. And with Gunn directing, what could possibly go wrong? If the storytelling is half as good as the Guardians of the Galaxy movies then we are in for a real treat.
Black Adam shows us evil at DCFandome
Black Adam to me is the biggest surprise of the DC Movies lineup. We watched Shazam not too long ago with Zachary Levi as Billy Batson. Great movie, great laughs and a good story despite the lack of CGI. Which actually made the movie a lot better because the focus was more on the storytelling. But then they cast The Rock!!! as Black Adam. Supervillain extraordinaire… I fell of my chair when I saw that.
As I laid on the floor, DCFandome gave us the teaser trailer…
Black Adam is the exact opposite of Shazam. Where Shazam gets and uses his powers for good. Black Adam is the opposite and uses them for whatever evil it is he can find. And although my knowledge of Black Adam is far and few, I was very in awe of the trailer they released.
All of the above trailers mentioned are the upcoming movies. I will be writing more about the DCFandome after the event ends tonight. I will deal with the TV shows and the videogames. Most of them are very interesting. Meanwhile keep an eye on Twitter where DCFandome has been trending.
Next, check out what is happening on the DCFandome Video Games and TV Series front!
