So the weekend is barely over and there is still a lot to tell about DCFandome. Have you heard of Gotham Knights? What about Rocksteady’s upcoming Suicide Squad game? The Flash season 7 trailer also premiered on one of the biggest DC events in modern history!
Rocksteady presents Suicide Squad at DCFandome
Arkham creators Rocksteady are currently developing a new videogame based on the Suicide Squad series. It is called; Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Yes, very ambitious title. Let’s see how hold up against Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the others…
A little background on Suicide Squad, in the trailer we see Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, King Shark and Deadshot. They have all had bombs implanted in their heads and are forced to work for the government as a covert ops group led by Amanda Waller. The game seems to be based on Suicide Squad volume 4, which ran between 2011 and 2014.
The game can only be played as a coop with four players maximum. This is interesting and I am hoping I can find people to play the game with. Or hope for a good online matchmaker like Anthem has.
During play, players can swap roles / characters and the rest can be filled in by bots. Every team member has different powers and has the ability to reach places that the other one can’t. The city of Metropolis is completely open world.
The game is supposed to be released in 2022 on the next gen consoles like the PS5, XBOX series X but also on PC. So basically all platforms.
Gotham Knights trailer debuts at DCFandome
Warner Bros Montreal have presented their action RPG Gotham Knights. Warner Bros Montreal are the creators of Batman Arkham: Origins. It is the same kind of game as Arkham Origins except that this game has different characters and you can play with up to two people.
Story is that the Batman is dead and new heroes take his place. In a last message to his friends Batman urges to take continue his work. The message is received by Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood and Nightwing. All prominent members of the Batman family. One of the baddies the heroes take on is Mr. Freeze, as we can see in the trailer.
While the game is created by the same studio that gave us Batman: Arkham Origins, the game has no connection to that part of the universe. I guess it is because they want to be able to continue that universe with new upcoming games about the Batman.
Gotham Knights is scheduled to be released in 2021 on all platforms which includes Playstation, Xbox and the PC.
The Flash season 7 trailer and Titans Q&A
If you have read my articles over the past year, you see that I am a huge fan of the TV show The Flash. I am also a big fan of the comics but I really enjoy the special fx where you see the Flash using speed to beat villains and get to one point to the other.
Season 6 ended abruptly and we never got to see the ending of the best villain of all times: Mirrormaster. The DCFandome gave us plenty to talk about.
Sure we have seen a version of Mirror Master in season five and that one was cute but the real mirror master, who turns out to be a psychopatic woman, the build up towards the reveal was amazing. It reminded me of the first season of the Flash where the man in the yellow suit was eventually revealed to be Eobard Thawn: The Reverse Flash.
In the season 7 trailer we see what happens. With the Speedforce dead and Barry in dire need of it, he asks several friends to build an artificial speedforce in order to save his lovely wife Iris Allen-West and the rest of his crew. While it was expected that Danielle Panabaker was going to be on maternity leave, the state of the world allowed her to come back for the upcoming season.
And what of Cisco? Will he regain his vibing powers? I certainly hope so. Will our heroes be on time to save the world from the evil Mirror Master? We can only guess until the new season drops in January, 2021. No official date has been set yet.
Must read: DCFandome at the movies, a real treat for the fans
The Titans Q&A at DCFandome was pretty spectacular too. All the spectacular scenes like Connor Kent taking out an elite squad of agents with Krypto the Dog stealing the scene. Or what of Dove taking down an entire Methlab? If you haven’t watched The Titans yet, I would highly recommend the show. The storytelling is amazing. And the violence is made for a mature audience.
The best parts of the Titans Panel were the little spoilers for the third season. We will get to see Commissioner Gordon, no not that one…the other one: Commissioner Barbara Gordon. And we get to see the Red Hood!!! Oh I have longed to see Red Hood on television. I mean I already played him as a game character on Batman: Arkham Knight and we got to see him in his own movie based on the comics, which rocked but still smelled like they copied it from Winter Soldier.
The panel itself was pretty short but they gave us the information we wanted and needed.
The Justice League – The Snyder Cut
#releasethesnydercut has been trending for years and fans wanted to watch the Justice League that was started by Zack Snyder but finished by Joss Whedon because of family circumstances of Zack Snyder. The DCFandome gave us a small insight with what the Snyder cut would look like.
Rumor was that there was a special Zack Snyder cut of the Justice League movie that is supposed to be a whole lot better than the movie we got in cinema. So fans started to campaign on twitter, petitions and other social media. At some point, we all believed that the Snyder cut was nothing but a myth.
But then came the big reveal: The Snyder cut is real…and it will premiere on HBO Max in 2021. There are many differences between the theatrical Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While the basic framework of the story is the same, dozens of additional scenes, backstories, mythos, worldbuilding elements, new characters, and teases for upcoming films are present in Snyder’s version but not the theatrical release.
So I can’t wait to see that movie. I guess I am one of the few who enjoyed The Justice League movie, although it was just for The Flash. I think Ezra Miller has done a great job. Even though he is not Grant Gustin…but we have watched Grant as the Scarlet Speedster for the past 6 years now while we have only seen Ezra Miller in 2 movies.
The DC Movieverse in general
The DC Movieverse, while moderately successful, has not seen many box office numbers like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has. Why not? Most of the time when you talk to fans, you hear something along the lines like: Marvel made standalone movies first to establish and flesh out the main characters before creating the ensemble movie like The Avengers movies. While I agree, my biggest complaint is that most of the Marvel villains are one dimensional baddies who only play a role in one movie with sometimes a flashback cameo in the next.
The DCFandome certainly showed that there is a huge craving by the fans and they are certainly ambitious to create great movies with amazing storytelling.
I think that DC movies can create two or three dimensional villains as well as three dimensional heroes to give their movies even more depth. To make it more fun for the fans. What I also don’t understand is that the DC animated universe and TV universe are so incredibly successful but the movies aren’t. The TV shows are all solid one by one. The Arrowverse, which consists of The Flash, Supergirl, DC Legends of Tomorrow and Superman & Lois are all connected. But think of the Titans and Doom Patrol. All great shows that flesh out their characters, giving them all their uniqueness in the DC TV verse.
DC Animations have been successful ever since Batman: The Animated Series. Which was continued by Superman, Batman Beyond and the Justice League, all by the mighty Bruce Timm.
So the big question is: How come that they can create such amazing universes on TV and animation but not in film? If you have ideas about that, kindly let me know in the comment section.
