Supergirl hangs up her cape and announced that the sixth season is also the final season. The TV show that has been on the air since 2015 starting out on CBS but moved to The CW th season after that. The sixth and final season will air in 2021.
Supergirl, a fresh minted breeze on TV
Supergirl is one of the shows I have followed from the start back in 2015. I always found it an odd pairing because all the DC shows like Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of tomorrow were on The CW. The first season didn’t make too much sense. There was a forced love relationship between Supergirl / Kara Danvers and Jimmy Olsen and a forced love triangle with Winn Scott (son of the Toymaker, Superman rogue). But the acting stood out especially from Calista Flockhart who was gold as Cat Grant.
Melissa Benoist also made you believe that you could fly while sister Alex struggled with her role earlier on as the show picked up. The problem however was that the writing of the first season was weak and often enough dull. That changed when the show was canceled and The CW took over the show.
The show had access to the entire Arrowverse and the action was a lot more spectacular than it ever was on CBS. The CW managed to turn the show into one of its hottest properties and I dare say that I even put the show ahead of Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. At least for the first couple of seasons.
Seasons 2 and 3, world destroyer versus the world savior
The second season, as mentioned before, was a lot better compared to the first season. Alex, Supergirl’s sister, came out of the closet. Mon-El , an iconic character from the DC Universe made his first appearance. The Martian Manhunter was present. The storylines clicked and Mon-El was a great find. Also the first appearance of Superman, played by Tyler Hoechlin, was an amazing find.
The best storyline was however the one of the World Destroyer, played by Odette Annable. She played the role of Reign, a fellow Kryptonian but one with a dark side and is ultimately set out to destroy the world rather than saving it. The story showed how Supergirl deals with someone who is her dark equal and I liked the storyline just for that.
Political overtones take over seasons 4 and 5
The stories of the show in seasons four and five saw an increase of political overtones. Now comics have a knack for that, for example there was a big aversion towards corporate greed back in the 1980s and promptly Superman’s archrival Lex Luthor was a corporate mogul. Fight the power! so to speak anyway.
The same happened in Supergirl seasons 4 and 5. There are a lot of good highlights such as the casting of Nicole Maines, the first transgender in the arrowverse and the storylines of Brainiac but the concealed political messages actually ruined the show for me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind that from time to time that there is some political message in a show, concealed or not but this lasted for an entire two seasons and I have often wondered if I should continue to watch. TV shows are my escape from reality which includes escaping the news and the last thing I want is to be confronted with concealed political messages that I am trying to escape from.
Melissa Benoist’s reaction after the announcement
Melissa Benoist reacted on Instagram after the announcement of Supergirl season 6 being its last. And as always, she did it with grace , style and class.
“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” she shared on Instagram. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.
“She’s had that impact on me, too,” Benoist continued. “She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”
Regarding the show’s final episodes, Benoist teased, “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
In conclusion, while I am sad to see the show go, despite the last two seasons, I am happy to tell you that I have never missed an episode. And that I have stood by the show through thick and thin. I hope the show gets the send off it deserves and hope to see Calista Flockhart one more time as the legendary Cat Grant. And many more old and familiar faces . My personal wishlist:
Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher in the same scene. Lynda Carter making an appearance again as the president and please with the legendary Wonder Woman spin. Calista Flockhart as mentioned before as the legendary Cat Grant. Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen. Michael McKean and Annette O’ Tool and Jonathan Schneider. Oh wait, the list is not complete without Laura Vandervoort who had a guestrole in the first season. I hope she can find the time to appear one more time.
All in all, Supergirl broke the ceiling and served as an inspiration not only for young girls but also for the LGBTQ community and neo feminists. Having transgenders and dealing with people coming out are pretty heavy subjects to deal with in this day of age. And the show’s handled with care. In that regard the show was definitely groundbreaking and I dare say ahead of its time.
