The official teaser trailer for the limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi is now out and I’d like to share my findings and thoughts with you!
“The fight is done, we lost.” After a devastating defeat and the destruction of the Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi has gone into exile. He must survive being hunted and draw the Empire’s eyes away from a young Luke Skywalker.“
After months of waiting, we finally got to see a sneak peek of what the Kenobi series is all about. This is only a Teaser Trailer, meaning we’re probably getting a full-length trailer in the upcoming months. This was super exciting to watch, with lots of familiar and new faces, tons of theories that are already in the making by passionate fans. Hopefully, it is a proper ending chapter for one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars.
The music choice is very interesting. In the first 30 seconds, “Battle of the Heroes” can be heard in the background, it’s a different arrangement but it can’t be mistaken. This piece was written for the final confrontation between Anakin and Obi-Wan in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
The one and only “Duel of the Fates” returns to delight us. Two of the most epic pieces have been re-recorded for this series and I’m thrilled to hear them with an incredible lightsaber duel. Let’s not forget that it has been confirmed that Darth Vader and Obi-Wan will face each other once again. I can’t describe how excited I am for this rematch!
The trailer ends with “Anakin’s Dark Deeds, a piece that represents the darker side of Anakin Skywalker and right after that, the iconic Darth Vader’s breathing. The 3 pieces of music we heard could be a hint about how the plot will unfold. We all know Luke and Obi-Wan survive this, but I predict that we’ll get to see an even darker side of Darth Vader and this excites me and frightens me at the same time.
Let’s analyze the most important frames in this trailer!
In the first scene, we see Obi-Wan wandering Tatooine in an Eopie. We all know the planet, there’s not much to describe. An endless and desolated desert planet, home to slaves, refugees, crime lords and a defeated Jedi Master.
His new duty is to permanently watch over a young Luke Skywalker and keep his presence hidden from the recently formed Galactic Empire. We can observe Luke pretending he’s piloting a ship without suspicion of the dangers that are around the corner.
An unidentified ship is about to land in what appears to be the Fortress of the Inquisitorius, an underwater imperial stronghold located on the planet Nur. Constructed in the middle of the ocean, its access must be very limited and only top imperials can get there.
The Grand Inquisitor makes his appearance in a live-action series. Formerly a Jedi Temple Guard, he is now the head of the Inquisitors, a special force made up of force-sensitives and Jedi turned to the Dark Side. The Inquisitor’s only task is to find the remaining Jedi and recruit them into their ranks, or execute them. It’s important to note that they’re not even close to be as powerful as a Sith Lord, but that doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. They only answer to Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.
In the next scene, a train is transporting a group of people, including Obi-Wan. My best guess is that they’re all workers coming back from a workday. They all look pretty tired, one of them shares some water with the guy in front of him. Having this type of job would help him keep a low profile, he also needs to earn some money for basic needs and this is the kind of place where no one asks questions, exactly what the circumstances demand.
This time, we see other Inquisitors in a meeting room. The Fifth brother, an unknown female Inquisitor (some people believe she is the Seventh Sister, but I disagree), and a new face; Reva. The meeting room has 5 seats with the middle one clearly being for the most important person. I assume it’s the Grand Inquisitor’s seat, you could argue it’s Vader’s but I seriously doubt he would sit in that kind of room with them.
Note how the room appears to be underwater. I’m certain it’s the same structure seen some seconds before. A previously released concept art included an inside look of a structure that is way too similar to be a coincidence.
A civilian has been hung; Reva is intimidating the people in the area. The Empire is well known for using this tactic, threat and kill the civilians until the hiding Jedi comes out to help them. Luke’s uncle, Owen, is in the crowd witnessing the Empire’s brutality.
“The key to hunting Jedi is patience. Jedi can not help what they are, their compassion leaves a trail. The Jedi code is like an itch, he cannot help it.” These are the words heard in the background, and they’re true. Just like the Sith bring chaos to everywhere they go, the Jedi bring hope and it becomes a way for their enemies to track them. Where light goes, darkness will follow.
Daiyu is a new planet for the series. Writer Joby Harold describes it as an “edgy, graffiti-ridden nightlife with a Hong-Kong feel to it”. Another perfect place to hide, but that won’t stop the Empire from searching it as many times as they need to find their objective.
This time, the Grand Inquisitor is the one threatening an unknown figure. “Where is he?” he asks, as his spinning double-bladed lightsaber gets closer to this man. Fans on the internet are already making their own theories and some believe the man could be Captain Rex, due to the similarity with Temuera Morrison’s silhouette. I think he’s just a bald man with some cybernetic implants, I really hope to be proven wrong!
It is obvious their need to find Obi-Wan is immense, we’ve already watched 3 Inquisitors and the Grand Inquisitor deployed on the same planet. It is unclear if they’re there at the same time or not but I wouldn’t be surprised. Darth Vader wouldn’t hesitate to make an example of them if they fail him.
Reva is chasing down this guy, he probably knows something about Kenobi’s whereabouts. As soon as he’s in her grasp, she ignites her lightsaber. I find it odd that her lightsaber is the only one amongst the Inquisitors with a different design. It doesn’t even appear to be a double-bladed one. Could she be a different kind of Inquisitor?
A mysterious gunslinger encounters Reva in a small alley. I wonder if someone will aid Obi-Wan in this fight. Odds are certainly not on his side and there’s a very small chance he’d be able to outmaneuver the Empire without any help.
A weird sight but probably not the last one of this kind that we’ll get to see. Obi-Wan using a gun feels like something is out of place. However, using his lightsaber would only confirm the enemy’s suspicion about him. Maybe he doesn’t even carry it for obvious reasons.
These birds could be just regular green birds that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong moment. But I can’t help notice the similarities with Morai, a green female Convor strongly related to Ahsoka Tano. Could it be?…….
And the closing frame of the trailer is the most epic one, where we see the title logo, hear this epic music play and hear Darth Vader’s breathing.
What are your thoughts? Did you enjoy the trailer or your expectations were too high? Will we get to see an unexpected character?
I hope this breakdown helps you understand a little more about the story and implications of everyone involved. I’m pretty sure most of you are as excited as I am. I can’t wait for the release date! It’s going to be so much fun considering it is one day before Star Wars Celebration, where we’ll get to know a lot more about the upcoming series, movies, books, etc.
