After years of waiting, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is finally out. We got two episodes with lots of familiar faces, new characters, surprises!
Spoiler Alert: The first thing that we got is a small compilation of scenes from Episodes I,II and III. Every important moment where Anakin, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Padmé participated. The last part of that scene included Padmé’s funeral, Anakin Skywalker’s rebirth into Darth Vader, the separation of Luke and Leia, and Yoda telling Obi-Wan that he’ll teach him to communicate with Qui-Gon. A perfect way to build up for what we were about to witness.
If you haven’t watched it please go and do it, then return and share your thoughts with us!
Execute Order 66
On a silent night in Coruscant, the younglings are calmly training their saber forms when two clone troopers abruptly interrupt their training session. As soon as the Jedi Knight teaching the younglings senses the aggression, her green lightsaber ignites to protect the children. She quickly dispatches the enemy and hurries to evacuate the little ones.
They couldn’t go too far before she is taken down by the 501st troopers. But at least she buys them enough time to escape. A girl who appears to be a younger version of Reva is at the center of the shot. The group of five children proceeds to run for their lives as Palpatine’s voice is heard in the background.
This type of scene is something that I was really hoping for. I consider Order 66 to be the saddest and most brutal moment in Star Wars, having a little more insight feels so wonderful. I am a little salty that no Temple Guards were shown but perhaps they’ll appear on another episode.
Jedi hunters
The Grand Inquisitor, the Fifth Brother, and Reva aka The Third Sister arrive in Tatooine. The air stinks of fear, all of its citizens are terrified, and rightfully so. They start asking questions, throwing glares that petrify anyone who dares to look back.
A few moments happen and they arrive in a cantina where they accuse the owner of helping a Jedi. This Jedi reveals himself when they attempt to kill the man who helped him. The Grand Inquisitor orders for him to be interrogated but Reva strikes him, after being stopped from killing this Jedi she’s scolded by the Grand Inquisitor.
The Inquisitors are former Jedi that turned to the dark side, now they serve as Darth Vader’s personal Jedi Hunters. Cruel, dangerous, and fearless. They are formidable opponents but make no mistake, Vader would cut all of them in half a second if he wanted to.
Which is why I’m very surprised by Reva. She’s absolutely out of her mind, she disobeys orders from the Grand Inquisitor several times in both episodes, hinders the search for Obi-Wan (to her credit, she was the one who pulled him out of his hideout), and the drop that spilled the glass was when she stabs the Grand Inquisitor, I couldn’t believe it!
She’s reckless, extremely ambitious, arrogant, and very violent. And I love it, she reminds me of times when the ancient Sith fought and betrayed each other to rise on the power ladder. This is why I wouldn’t find it strange that she gets executed by Vader in an upcoming episode.
The Galactic Empire has a very clear chain of command. If you go against the Empire’s interests you’re defying Darth Vader and the Emperor himself. Palpatine is known for spotting very ambitious individuals, but this might be too much, and Vader has zero tolerance for anyone who would even think of replacing him. What do you think they’re going to do with her once they find out what she’s done?
The fight is done, we lost
Obi-Wan, once one of the greatest Jedi Masters is now just a shell of what he used to be. He has chosen to live a normal life; waking up early, going to work, and buying stuff from a Jawa named Teeka. He’s now like the majority of the people living in Tatooine; boring, without much hope for the future, and unwilling to raise a hand when injustice happens.
He has constant nightmares of everything that happened in Revenge of the Sith, imagine all the trauma that he has endured. He tries to reach Qui-Gon, but his former master doesn’t answer the call.
Obi-Wan must feel so lost after the worst possible scenario happened; Anakin turned to the dark side, Padmé died, and the Jedi Order was destroyed. I also believe that he has virtually cut himself from the Force, not only because he is past that life, but because reaching out to it would draw the Inquisitors to him. It is a matter of survival, the less he stands out the better.
It’s no wonder why he refused to help the Jedi that was looking for him, he’s now a broken man and his only purpose is to oversee and protect Anakin Skywalker’s offspring, despite uncle Owen clearly not wanting him anywhere near his family.
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope
A shot that only lasts a couple of seconds but I would recognize the beauty of Alderaan even if I were wearing three pairs of sunglasses at the same time. I was stunned for a few seconds until I realized who was going to appear next.
A small and adorable young Leia Organa makes her debut on the screen. This was such a lovely surprise, I can’t believe how good Vivien Lyra Blair is!
She’s everything you would expect: a smart ass, adventurer, with a lot of confidence, a troublemaker. Despite her young age, Leia is very, very perceptive to the emotions and thoughts of the people that surround her. I wonder if this is due to how she grew up in a political environment or because of her bloodline.
Like many Star Wars main characters, she’s accompanied by a small droid named L0-LA59 (Lola). We haven’t seen much of Lola’s capabilities but I’m getting BD-1 vibes from it.
Being the daughter of a member of the Imperial Senate, she’s the perfect bait to lure our fallen Jedi Master. She’s kidnapped by a group of bounty hunters sent by Reva. Bail Organa contacts him and after a couple of attempts, he convinces Obi-Wan that she’s also his responsibility, not only Luke.
Do you wanna buy some death sticks?
Obi-Wan is now on Daiyu, a lawless place where according to a local girl (who happens to be Ewan’s actual daughter) once you get it, you cannot leave the planet. The streets of a place like this are full of vendors, drug dealers, addicts, scammers, and beggars.
I felt super sad when I saw the 501st trooper begging for money in the streets, still wearing his armor after ten years. After the Galactic Empire was established, most of the Clone Troopers that once served the Grand Army of the Republic were dismissed.
They were literally bred for war, after it was done there was no purpose for them. I’m sure that lots of clones ended up in a similar way. I wonder if this is a criticism of how war veterans are treated after their service.
Aggressive negotiations
After threatening a scammer who pretends to be a Jedi, he learned the location where Leia was being held, Obi-Wan managed to get in disguised as a worker. He was discovered and instead of trying to talk his way out of it like in the old times, he started throwing punches at the thugs. He’s very rusty and it looks, but Kenobi manages to take them down.
After another encounter with the people that kidnapped Leia, Obi-Wan manages to find her and they get out of the building without major issues. Another fun fact, the leader of the bounty hunters is played by Flea, the bass player of Red Hot Chili Peppers!
Leia is scared and initially, Obi-Wan dismisses her, but he remembers that despite her smarty-pants attitude she’s just a kid. A kid who was taken away from her home wishes to be back with her family.
In the middle of their chat, Reva places a bounty on Kenobi’s head. Almost everyone in the area starts searching for the fugitive. Confused by the identity of this stranger, Leia attempts to run away and falls off the roof. For the first time in a decade, Obi-Wan reaches out to the Force and saves her.
It is at this moment that Obi-Wan earns her trust. I think that they will build a powerful and close relationship similar to his and Luke’s. I mean, there’s a reason why Leia’s son is named Ben. Also, the fact that Leia and Obi-Wan never interact in a New Hope opens a lot of possibilities! I can’t express how much I like Leia’s character, she has so much of both Anakin and Padmé’s traits in her.
He’s alive
Right at the end of their confrontation. Reva clarifies that her intent isn’t to kill Obi-Wan, not yet at least. She will deliver Kenobi to Lord Vader. Obi-Wan’s reaction to this is strong enough for Reva to feel all of his thoughts. “You didn’t know… He’s alive Obi-Wan. Anakin Skywalker is alive.”
His former brother, best friend, and apprentice who is also the same person that led the clone legions that slaughtered hundreds of Jedi at the Jedi Temple is alive and is looking for him, he’s in total shock.
Finally, Darth Vader, the man who terrorizes both allies and enemies with just his mere presence, the second most powerful being in the galaxy, has returned to the screen.
I think the first two episodes were amazing. I got to care about many characters, and wonder about their motivations. I also how dark this series is about to get, I suspect this version of Vader will be the most menacing we’ve ever seen! I really hope that there are lots of lightsaber duels, epic music, and maybe one or two limbs being cut off.
I want to see more of both Leia and Luke! Even if it’s just a small scene, learning more about their childhood can help us understand more about them. Reva is out for blood and I’m enjoying it very much. Her ambition will probably end her life but I still wanna know how she interacts with Darth Vader.
Star Wars fans love to make crazy theories every time something as big as this series happens. I usually don’t care for those theories but this time I’m going to contribute. I believe that it is possible that we encounter a character or reference from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. It is a long shot but that’s what makes it super fun!
