The Mandalorian Season 3 Trailer Breakdown

Adrian by Adrian|

We’re just a month and a half away from the Season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian! A brand new trailer just released and while it includes footage from the previous trailer it also includes new scenes that are very interesting. Here’s my breakdown of it.

What is a Mandalorian

“Our people are scattered like stars in the galaxy. What are we? What do we stand for?” This is the opening line of the trailer. Probably one of the first things that someone wonders when hearing or watching Mandalorians is who are they or what’s their story.

Mandalorian Season 3

For thousands of years, the Mandalorians had the reputation of being the fiercest, strongest, and most lethal warriors in the galaxy. Their way of life is to live and die for the glory of combat. I’d dare to say that the only group that has an identity that’s just as defined as the Mandalorians’ is the Jedi Order.

When the Galactic Empire took over, both Mandalorians’ and Jedis’ existence were endangered by the new ruler of the galaxy. After the Jedi Order was eradicated only the Mandalorians could pose a threat to Emperor Palpatine’s efforts.

The galaxy is a cruel place where the weak rarely survive, ancient Mandalorians understood this perfectly. In the Clone Wars era, many of the new Mandalorian leaders wanted to abandon the ideals that once made their people be recognized in every corner of the galaxy.

As a result of this, the strength of the Mandalorians diminished and years later the planet was submerged in a civil war that tore apart both the planet and the Mandalorian clans.

Din Djarin is heading to Mandalore to be forgiven for his transgressions but I think he’s going to learn a lot about his people’s story and culture. His idea of what is a Mandalorian might be completely re-made, giving him a sense of having a purpose in life.

Uniting the clans

Mandalorian clans are essentially big, strong, and organized families. Some clans are stronger than others, in a culture where strength means everything the stronger the clan is, the higher it is in the hierarchy.

At least that’s how it was when someone held the title of Mandalore (Mand’alor). The most powerful Mandalores were capable of bringing together all clans to fight against a single enemy. One of the best examples of this is Mandalore The Ultimate, he was the one that led the Mandalorians against the Republic during the Mandalorian Wars.

Mandalore The Ultimate

During the Galactic Empire era, something similar but on a much smaller scale happened. Clan Wren, Rook, Vizsla, and Eldar pledged allegiance to Bo-Katan Kryze. There are still many details that are unknown but Kryze’s rule failed and it looks like every clan is now on its own, trying to survive.

Interesting fact, this Mandalorian that appears on the trailer is wearing armor with Clan Eldar’s symbol.

Din genuinely respects and cares for his people, I have no doubt that he’ll try to regroup all Mandalorians and maybe even become the new Mandalore in the process. But bringing together all clans is something easier said than done.

Returning to Coruscant

A very brief scene shows Doctor Pershing being transported via shuttle in what appears to be Coruscant. The last time we saw him was right before Bo-Katan, Cara Dune, Fennec Shand, Koska Reeves, and Din Djarin boarded Moff Gideon’s cruiser.

I’d assume that he was captured by the Republic to be questioned about his experiments. There are many mysteries that surround Grogu, his origins, and the experiments Moff Gideon made with him.

This season might look like it’s going to be all about Din Djarin and his evolution as a Mandalorian but we must not forget that Grogu is still virtually an unknown character. I’m really curious about the consequences that he’s going to face and the secrets he might reveal about our favorite little green friend.

More Order 66 flashbacks

To this date, Order 66 still strikes me as the most heartbreaking moment in Star Wars. The moment that the Jedi Order was destroyed by Anakin Skywalker and the clones that served with them for years.

We’ve been getting new perspectives of Order 66 in different Star Wars media: Clone Wars, Rebels, Jedi: Fallen Order, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Grogu survived the Jedi Purge but we still don’t know how.

Scene from the first episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series

This trailer reveals a new scene that looks very similar to the one that appeared in The Book of Boba Fett but by paying attention you can tell that the hallway of this scene is different. When Grogu first remembers the attack on the Jedi Temple we can look that the floor has a dark red color, like the main corridors of the temple.

However, the floor in the trailer’s scene is different. I might be trying “too hard” to find hidden details but it’s rare for Filoni and Favreau to miss these kinds of details.

I can’t wait to know more about what happened inside the temple, maybe we can finally see Jedi Temple Guards in a live-action series?

We don’t serve their kind here

One of the first things I remember being confused about Star Wars was when Luke enters Mos Eisley’s cantina and he’s asked to leave the droids out. Well, it looks like now the droids took matters into their own hands and now have a bar that serves only droids. The shiny R series droids and the B1 battle droids stand out from the rest.

Din Djarin used to hate droids but after the sacrifice IG-11 did to protect Grogu he’s been starting to tolerate them. To the point that he’s now using an astromech on his modified N1-Starfighter as well as entering the droid-only bar.

Mandalore’s first conquerors

Grogu is leaving the mines when suddenly a strange creature appears, someone’s in trouble but that’s not him. The creature falls to the ground after Grogu force pushes it.

Even though he didn’t spend much time with Luke Skywalker, it looks like the training has paid off. We’ve just see a glimpse of Grogu’s powers, there are so many possibilities of what he might be able to do in the future.

Let’s talk about the creature, perhaps it’s a regular creature that just happens to live near the mines but what if it isn’t? I find it odd that it looks like the combination of a Taung and a Talz. Taungs are a humanoid species that many think consider to be extinct. Why is this important? Because the Taung species were the first and original Mandalorians.

If there’s a place where a Taung could be found it should be Mandalore. I don’t know if this will impact the story but it’s still a very cool thing to think about. I could be wrong, it might be just a regular humanoid creature. The good thing is that we only have to wait a month and a half to find out!

What are you most excited about and what would you like to see in Season 3 of The Mandalorian?
