This guide will shown you how to complete the objective “Replace the Damaged Tram” in Chapter 1: New Arrivals in the Dead Space remake!

This guide is for the Dead Space Remake, released in 2023!

This puzzle is a very important one as you’ll learn about using Stasis to solve puzzles. There will be several points throughout the game where you’ll need stasis to slow down machinery to proceed in the game.

If you need a reminder of how Stasis and Kinesis work, the Starter Guide to Dead Space is here to refresh your memory. There have been some changes to these systems and even if you are a Dead Space 2008 veteran, you may find helpful tips in this guide.

Hammond will inform you that he needs Isaac to replace the damaged tram that’s blocking the tramway throughout the ship. This will allow the crew of the USG Kellion to traverse the USG Ishimura using its tram system.

On the way to the tram repair room, you can find a Save Station and a Stasis Recharge Station. They are in the middle of the long corridor that ends with the door to the Tram Repair Room. Use those proceeding to the objective.

Explore the Area

There are some things you’ll want to make a note of as you enter the Tram Repair Station.

To the right of you when you first walk into the Tram Repair Room, you’ll find a blue locker containing a Power Node. Next to it is a locker that will contain loot.

Use the guide to all Power Node Locations in Dead Space to make sure you are not going to miss any while exploring the ship.

As you walk towards the middle of the room, on the pathway, you’ll run into a Claw Control console stating “Claw Disengaged”. In the middle of the pathway, you’ll find two consoles.

Tram Repair (1) will be red and unable to be interacted with. The Tram Repair Shutter Console (2) appears blue and can be interacted with. On the wall behind these panels, you’ll find a Stasis Recharge Station (3).

At the far end of the room will be a locked door labeled “To Hydroponics Tram Station”. Keep this in mind as this will be useful to know later on in the game. Near this door is a supply crate you can smash open for loot.

Engaging the Claws

To start the tram repair, you’ll need to go to the center of the room where the Tram Repair monitor is and interact with the right panel. This allows the shutters to open revealing a broken tram.

Once you have opened the shutters, the Claw Control Consoles can now be interacted with. Go to your left to activate the Claw near the room entrance.

Once activated the claw will extend and grab onto the broken tram shuttle. A necromorph will come out of a vent behind you so you’ll need to dispatch it.

Necromorph ambush 1

Make your way to the opposite end of the room to reach the other Claw Control console. A necromorph will crawl out of a vent behind the console to scare you. From the bridge with the main console another necromorph will attack you, so don’t waste too much time on the first one from the vent.

When you activate the second claw control console, it will let go of the tram and retract due to a malfunction. Enter Aim Mode to apply Kinesis right when the claw grabs hold of the tram.

Replacing the Broken Tram

Run back up to the Tram Repair console while the stasis is still active on the claw. Interact with the console to have both claws retract and initiate repairs.

If you are too slow, the second claw will retract and you’ll need to restart the process. If you need to, refill your stasis with the recharge station behind the console.

Once you activate the console, necromorphs will appear from both ends of the room, which you will need to defeat. As this is going on, the damaged tram will be replaced with a new one.

You have now completed Tram repairs so now you’ll have to press forward and find the Data Board to bring the consoles back online.

That portion of the quest will not be covered in this guide but now you know how using your Stasis Module will be necessary to complete quests throughout the game. Be sure to check the room for any things of interest that you might have missed and best of luck surviving!

How to Replace the Damaged Tram in Dead Space

This is a step-by-step summary of the actions you need to take to solve the first puzzle in Dead Space and replace the damaged tram. This happens very early on, in Chapter 1: New Arrivals.

Active Time: 3 minutes

Instructions

  1. As you enter the Tram Repair Station, explore the area to get yourself familiar with the environment.
  2. Stand in the center of the room and interact with the Tram Repair console. This opens up the shutters to reveal the broken tram.
  3. Go to your left and engage the left Claw from the control terminal. Take care of the necromorph that will come out of the vent behind you.
  4. Go to the right side. Activate the right Claw.
  5. As the claw extends, use Stasis on the right Claw as it is extending towards the tram. If you don't, it will retract back in and will not engage the tram.
  6. Run to the Tram Repair Console in the middle and interact with it. If you don't do it fast enough, the Statis will expire and the right claw will disengage and return back.
  7. This completes the puzzle. As you fight the spawning necromorphs, the claws will retract the damaged tram and a new one will arrive, ready to be used.

Notes

This is the very first puzzle in Dead Space Remake. It teaches you how to use two key gameplay mechanics - Statis and Kinesis. They will be very valuable in not just other puzzles later on, but in combat as well.

In the middle of the room, behind the Tram Control Console, there is a Stasis refill station. Use it. Stasis is helpful against the attacking necromorphs that will spawn from both corners of the room as you progress with the puzzle.
