Temenos, The Cleric: Octopath Traveler 2 Character Guide

RubyRose by RubyRose|

This character guide for Temenos serves to highlight his story and unique functions. It explains the actions unique to Agnea, including Path Actions and Abilities.

Octopath Traveler II Character - Temenos Temenos’s Unique Actions Explained

Each Traveler has unique abilities specific to them, referred to as Path Actions, which they get two, one for each time of day. These can accomplish a variety of goals from accessing new areas, and information on the world, or providing additional information.

Path Actions are only available to the character that starts with this job, in this case, Temenos. They must be in your party to perform the Path Actions below.

Day Path Action: Guide

Guide allows Temenos to convince an NPC to follow him in battle. NPCs can provide various effects in battle, but cannot be used while attempting to Coerce.

Day Path Action: Guide

Guide is a level-based Path Action. This means it will always succeed, but cannot be attempted without the required level.

You can find NPCs in the world that will reduce the required level of Guiding some NPCs. Such NPCs will be noted below.

The earliest NPC that provides this benefit is the Head Cleric in the Flameschurch Cathedral. Using any Path Action that can get information from NPCS, like Temenos’s Coerce, will reward you with ‘Guide with Ease’.

Guide is a great alternative to Agnea’s Allure for NPCs that have a lower level requirement to be Guided. While this action cannot fail, you may not be able to get powerful allies until much later on.

With Allure being the daytime alternative, both have their uses, as some NPC will require an exceptionally high level to be guided. Allure can still allow you to have those NPCs follow you, though with the risk of damaging your reputation within a town.

Night Path Action: Coerce

Coerce allows Temenos to duel an NPC to gain information. You must deplete a foe’s Shield Points to break them and gain information.

Night Path Action: Coerce

Coerce is a combat-based Path Action. Much like the Hunter’s Provoke, it doesn’t appear to be limited by level, but instead only by your combat ability. Unlike Provoke, however, failure or retreat will not result in your reputation being damaged.

Despite being combat-related, it does not grant any EXP or JP like the Hunter’s Provoke or the Warrior’s Challenge. This is due to combat ending immediately after breaking an opponent.

This action is not limited by chance or level, as such no NPCs will be able to enhance this Path action.

Coerce is the nighttime counterpart to Hikari’s Bribe action. This gives you a chance to get information at night without monetary costs.

As both action are not limited by level, Corece is the better option in a lot of cases after you receive battle jobs. Though if you find it too difficult to Coerce an NPC, Bribe is still an excellent alternative.

Talent: Moonlight Judgement

When Temenos is in your party, he’ll activate Moonlight Judgement when entering combat at night. This will Blind all opponents for 1 turn, while reducing their Physical and Elemental Defense for 3 turns.

Talent: Moonlight Judgement

Moonlight Judgement is exceptionally good for exploring at night. The Blind can often allow you a free turn to set up buffs and other useful effects. That aside, weakening foes is still a powerful effect that makes combat easier.

This works well in combination with a party that has access to plenty of multi-target attacks. All foes having reduced defenses allows them to absolutely shred enemies making combat quick and easy.

Latent Power: Judgment

Latent Powers are a new feature to Octopath Traveler 2, which gives each traveler an ability that’s completely unique to them. These skills are earned by building the Latent Power Gauge by receiving damage and breaking foes. Using a Latent Power expends the gauge to provide its effects and does not require SP.

Temenos’ Latent Power is called Judgment. Judgment allows all of Temenos’ attacks to reduce a foe’s Shield Points.

Latent Power: Judgment

For Temenos himself, prior to getting battle jobs, Judgment has fairly limited uses outside of Boosting basic attacks. This is due to his lack of multi-hit skills, leaving his basic attacks as the only way of getting the maximum value out of this Latent Power.

Temenos can also use this in combination with basic attacks to break most NPCs while attempting to Coerce them. You’ll still need to hit, but without a sub job can allow you to break any opponent with a four or less Shield Points.

After getting battle jobs, however, there is a lot of potential that can be explored with the multi-hit attacks of other jobs.

One strong example of this is the combination of Temenos as a Warrior using Aggressive Slash under the effects of the Dancer’s Divine Skill. This would make Temenos hit all foes a minimum of 3 times, and if they’re weak break their shields. With BP added in, you’d be able to push this up to a 6-9 attack count, making it very strong for breaking any foes that are weak to Swords.

Octopath Traveler II Job Icon - Cleric Temenos’ Cleric Skills

Temenos’ starting job is Cleric. With that comes a set of active and passive skills that complete the character. Clerics are primarily supportive jobs that provide healing as well as many defensive buffs.

Temenos’ EX Skills

EX Skills are a new feature of Octopath Traveler 2. Each Traveler has two skills unique to them that the other Travelers cannot get. These are often powerful attacks or skills with powerful utility.

Prayer for Plenty

  • Skill Type: Recovery
  • SP Cost: 20
  • Effect: Restore a large amount of HP to a single ally, ignoring their Maximum HP
  • Boost Effect: Increase healing amount per BP spent.

This a great healing spell, despite its ability to only heal one person. This is because it will always provide 100% of the healing past a character’s Maximum HP as Overhealth, letting them sit above maximum until hit.

Where to Unlock Prayer for Plenty

Prayer for Plenty can be obtained by taking Temenos to the Altar of the Flamebringer. He is required to be in the active party, or he will not receive this skill.

This Altar can be found in the Cleric’s Guild, located in Northwestern Borderfall, which lies between Flamechurch and Montwise. Inside the Guild, head to the door on the back left to enter the altar room.

Heavenly Shine

  • Skill Type: Octopath Traveler II Type Light Attack Light
  • SP Cost: 100%
  • Effect: Consume all of your SP, then deal light-based damage to all foes. The more SP consumed, the higher the potency of the skill.
  • Boost Effect: Increases damage dealt per BP spent.

Heavenly Shine can actually make Temenos a huge damage threat. If you stick SP boosting effects on him alongside Elemental Attack, the damage potential of the skill is massive. Combine with some help from a scholar and Temenos can destroy most foes.

This skill, like some of those that belong to the Cleric, can be affected by Advanced Magic, upgrading the skill to Divine Brilliance and hitting twice; as well as Alephan’s Wisdom, upgrading the skill to Sacred Effulgence and hitting three times.

Where to Unlock Heavenly Shine

As his second EX Skill, Heavenly Shine is unlocked upon completion of Temeno’s story. He will not have access to the skill until after the final chapter concludes, and thus cannot use it in the final battle of the chapter.

Octopath Traveler II Character - Temenos Temenos’ Story

The sections below are details on Temenos’ Story in Octopath Traveler 2. As such, there are many spoilers below.

Overview

Temenos is an Inquisitor, a high-ranking and hand-picked soldier of the Sacred Guard. As an Inquisitor, he serves the pontiff of the church, who can ask most anything of them that they wish. Temenos is often lax in his duties unless prompted otherwise.

As a primary duty, Temenos protect the pontiff, the clergy of the church, as well as members of the church. This is typically from those branded as heretics, or those that speak against the Order of the Sacred Flame.

After a mysterious incident at the Flameschurch Cathedral, Temenos set himself out on a journey to unravel the details behind the incident.

Chapter 1

Temenos’ story begins as what appears to be a flashback, which is soon revealed to just be Temenos putting on a stage play with a diorama of sorts. It ends up being cut short as Temenos forgets a line of the scripture being recited, while the pontiff also comes to chat with Temenos.

The pontiff makes mention to Temenos as his inquisitor that there seems to be a rise in heretics lately. He wants Temenos to investigate and see if there’s a reason why this may be the case. He asks Temenos to stop by the Cathedral later that night and report his findings. With that the pontiff heads off to meet with another person that happens to be waiting for them.

As Temenos approaches Flamechurch’s town center, a would-be heretic happens to be trying to stir up a commotion. This is interrupted by a knight of the Sacred Guard that has been dispatched to Flamechurch, who chases away a couple of the heretics. The remaining heretic unfortunately decides to make Temenos his hostage.

Temenos, in his typical lax fashion calmly asks the person if he is a heretic. Confused, the heretic is unable to respond. Then Temenos utters a prayer, striking down the heretic, and leaving him unconscious.

He then introduces himself to the knight that assisted earlier, who in turn introduces himself as Crick. Crick is a newly appointed knight dispatched to Flameschurch by the Sacred Guard. Crick happens to be headed to the Cathedral, but heads the wrong way, which Temenos takes it upon himself to Guide him and refer to him as a ‘lost lamb’.

Temenos and Crick arrive at the Cathedral that night, only to find the door locked despite Temenos being invited. Temenos decides to find someone that may know of another way in or out of the cathedral and Coerce the information from them. This leads them to take an underground passage that leads into the church.

Upon arriving in the church, they approach the main room of the cathedral where service would be held. They discover a recently fallen pontiff, who unfortunately cannot be saved. Before long, they are attacked by the very creature that felled the pontiff.

After its defeat, Temenos will investigate the area to find clues that point to this being a murder, rather than an accident. Concluding that the window that is protected by a stong magic seal was broken from the inside, based on dirt found on glass on the inside of the cathedral.

Temenos also concludes the monster was lured, as an incense of a flower known to attract beasts much like the one that attacked them was left burning. He also notes that special torches that are only used for important ceremonies were also present.

Lastly, he discovers a scripture book with a note in it that simply says “night will fall” tucked in it. He hides it away on his person as suddenly members of the Sacred Guard arrive, demanding they both leave the area.

Temenos finds this suspicious, as there’s no way the Sacred Guard could have been alerted to this incident this quickly and tasks Crick to find some information for him from the Sacred Guard.

The next day, the captain of the Sacred Guard showed up informing Crick that he will be relocated. Temenos and the Captain of the Sacred Guard are wary of each other, both assuming the other is hiding information.

Temenos himself searches for information before reconvening with Crick that day. Crick was able to find what was needed, and they head to the library away from prying eyes to discuss things.

With that Temenos is no longer bound to his duties as Inquisitor with the pontiff’s passing and the investigation being concluded. He sets out, seeking the truth behind the incident.
