Today has been a day full of intense emotions and surprises. Just as the Lucasfilm panel was ending at Star Wars Celebration, the shocking announcement about three new Star Wars movies left us in awe!
Movies are how Star Wars was born. The planets, vehicles, languages, names, and characters that we all love were created by George Lucas.
A New Hope was a gamble for everyone involved but here we are more than forty-six years later; with a constantly expanding universe that continues to bring us so much joy.
A few years have passed since the last Star Wars movie was released. Since then we’ve gotten incredible live-action and animated series that have reignited the spark inside many Star Wars fans.
It looks like this time has given Disney and Lucasfilm executives enough time to re-think their approach to Star Wars movies and they finally revealed what they have planned for us in the future.
Kathleen Kennedy just announced that there are three new Star Wars movies being worked on. Here’s everything we know so far about them.
The first movie is going to be directed by the one and only Dave Filoni. This movie is going to wrap up the events that happen in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
It’s no secret that Disney’s intention was to finish the story of this series on the big screen and honestly I don’t think there’s a better person to direct it.
Dave Filoni has been involved in the creation and development of some of the best Star Wars shows in recent years. The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka, and obviously The Mandalorian.
James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari) is going to take us all the way back before the times of the Old Republic to an era officially called “Dawn of the Jedi”. Going back so much in time opens an incredible amount of possibilities.
We could see ancient Sith Empires conquering hundreds of systems, Jedi developing their own philosophies in a time when peace and prosperity were non-existent, and many mysteries and dangers that we can’t even imagine.
These are uncharted territories (by the Disney Canon, that is) so it is so exciting to think that there will be fewer creative restrictions. I can’t wait to learn more about this one!
The biggest highlight of the day is by far the announcement that Daisy Ridley will return to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker (yes, I said it). This movie’s director is the academy award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Bahadur, Ms. Marvel).
We will see how Rey rebuilds the Jedi Order fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker. These are the only details that were shared but I’m very curious about how this movie will be handled. While I’m not the biggest fan of the sequel trilogy, it would be a lie to say that I don’t like Rey.
Rey and Kylo Ren are my favorite characters in the sequels, many things about the movies are inconsistent but the essence of these characters is what made me enjoy (for the most part) episodes VII, VIII, and IX.
Fifteen years doesn’t sound like much but a lot can happen in this spawn of time. I imagine that at this point in her life, Rey is a very powerful and wiser Jedi. Learning from the mistakes of the past Jedi is a must if there’s any hope for this new Jedi Order to survive.
Just like many others, I think that Finn was done dirty in the sequels. From being one of the main characters in The Force Awakens to barely doing anything worth remembering in the other two movies.
Being a former Stormtrooper gave his story so much potential. What makes it worse is how him being force-sensitive was never addressed in any part of the movie.
I’d honestly understand if John Boyega doesn’t want to return to Star Wars but on the other hand, I’d really like to see Finn being developed to his full potential and this movie is the best chance for that.
Watching a new Jedi Order be created from scratch sounds very entertaining but let’s not remember that there is no light without darkness. Unless Disney hasn’t learned the lesson and they bring back Palpatine (again), I think we can assume that we’re also going to meet a new villain. If the Jedi can rebuild from zero, so can the Sith.
It’s way too soon to do more speculations but I’m hoping that Disney really makes an effort to do things properly instead of quickly. The actors, staff, and mainly the fans deserve a good quality movie.
The cherry on top of this is that Kathleen Kennedy stated that these movies will feature the iconic opening crawls. It might not look like a big deal but it is a core part of the Star Wars experience and it definitely would be strange for them not to be present.
This announcement and the Teaser Trailer for the Ahsoka series make Day 1 of Star Wars Celebration something very hard to beat!
Which movie are you most excited about?
