Ghosted the movie

Ghosted: Funny action movie with awesome cameos

Manfred by Manfred|

Ghosted combines the action and comedic talents of both Ana de Armas and Chris Evans and turns it into an action-packed comedy.

While I was sick in bed these past two weeks, I decided to watch Ghosted. It’s a movie with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. de Armas seems to be Evans’ default screen mate these days when Scarlett Johansson can’t make it.

Ghosted: What is it about?

The movie Ghosted is about a loveable farmer’s market seller Cole Turner played by Chris Evans. He dreams of traveling the world while working on his book about the history of agriculture when his father got sick and he was called back to the farm his parents owned.

Ghosted nailed the winning combination of action-packed adventure with romance and drama, offering something for everyone in the household.

Sadie, played by de Armas, is posing as an international art dealer who is trying to take it easy. Which is why she buys a plant to take care of at home. In my opinion, a Tamagotchi would have helped too because you can do that on the go.

Cole and Sadie hit it off almost immediately when she buys the plant at Cole’s stand. And after she pays, Sadie leaves in her car BUT Cole’s co-worker tells him that the two of them weren’t fighting but flirting. The sexual tension was felt all over the market.

So Cole chases Sadie and asks if she wants to go out on a date. She refuses at first but then says yes.

Cole has the time of his life with Sadie and the other way around as well. So after a full day and night out where they visit a museum and a nightclub and a supermarket for Sadie to buy groceries, the two of them make love to each other. And Cole thinks he has found the one. But does Sadie think the same thing?

When Cole tries to contact Sadie she doesn’t reply. Remembering that he put his asthma inhaler in her bag and it comes with a tracker, Cole manages to track her down and finds out she is in London.

His sister thinks she ghosted him, as in not replying to his texts and messages. But Cole’s parents think that he should go visit her in London. And thus Cole travels to London.

It’s a trap!

Cole arrives in London and gets conned in the taxi but who’s counting? He is looking for Sadie who is somewhere in London. Using his GPS tracker, Cole thinks he found her in a nightclub with friends. But she just looks like Sadie but turns out to be someone else.

Without knowing, Cole falls into a trap and the next thing we see is that he is tied to a chair surrounded by criminals who are trying to torture him. They mistook Cole for someone nicknamed the Taxman.

Just when the criminals try to torture Cole by dropping deadly insects on him, he is rescued by someone in a mask. And she is kicking ass. Low kicks, high kicks, round kicks, master gunnery, and all kinds of skills you wouldn’t see on any of the dating apps like Tinder, let alone in an international art dealer. Or was that just a facade?

It turns out that Sadie isn’t who she says she is. She is CIA and was on an undercover mission before taking a break when she met Cole at the farmer’s market. And all that before Cole could ask why Sadie ghosted him.

And this is when the actual movie starts.

Sadie indeed isn’t who she says she is. In fact, she has gone rogue. She is a rogue CIA agent.

Ghosted nailed the winning combination of action-packed adventure with romance and drama, offering something for everyone in the household.

Lots of explosions

Sadie’s actual mission was to get a little something called Aztec. It is locked in a suitcase and nobody knows the key. Comes Cole who figures out that the DNA of a plant is the actual key to opening the suitcase and unlocking whatever Aztec is.

And this is the part where the movie’s plot becomes paper thin. Cole is traded by Sadie, or at least pretends to get traded since the criminals still think he’s the Taxman. However, one of the criminals finds out that Sadie is the actual Taxman and not Cole. A picture taken by Cole and put on social media gave it way. A big fight on the plane ensues and Sadie ends up getting shot while Cole and her jump out of the plane with a parachute.

Even though the criminals find them before the CIA, nobody gets hurt and the criminals get away.

Sadie is taken to Langley, CIA headquarters. And she and Cole are submitted to a polygraph test while interrogated about the events that happened ever since Sadie went rogue.

The paper-thin part is that Cole is suddenly used in an undercover operation. He’s just a civilian with little to no training, let alone CIA training. But the CIA does use Cole’s nonexistent skills to set up a meeting with the buyers for Aztec.

I mean you can take the boy off the farm but the farm not out of the boy. But just like in previous scenes where Cole was fighting alongside Sadie, he suddenly possesses wrestling skills? It was never mentioned in the film that he wrestled in High School or College.

Yes, I understand that farmers can be ridiculously strong because of the nature of their job. Working the land is a lot of physical work but who did Cole wrestle with? Livestock? It’s ruined the credibility of Cole a little bit in the movie. But it’s a popcorn movie so I guess plotholes don’t really matter. They ghosted consistency I suppose.

The end scene of the movie was amazing. A lot of well-filmed action scenes and Sadie and Cole get together and start a relationship.

What I liked about Ghosted

I liked the movie for several reasons. Despite some of the plotholes and the movie losing some credibility especially when it comes to Cole Turner, the movie is very enjoyable.

Ghosted nailed the winning combination of action-packed adventure with romance and drama, offering something for everyone in the household.

There are a lot of high-paced scenes jam-packed with a lot of action. Like the scene on the bus in Afghanistan. The scene was high-paced and had a lot of action. While Sadie was driving the bus, Cole had to fend off several terrorists in order to keep Sadie safe. That scene was definitely memorable.

Other scenes that just rocked this entire movie were the final scenes where they walked right into a trap with the majority of the bar being undercover bounty hunters who were trying to hunt down the Taxman.

And the best part was the cameos with a lot of Chris Evans’ friends from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which drew me to the movie in the first place.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos

The cameos were hilarious and actually added to the story of the movie, Ghosted. They were hilarious.

The list is quite long and I am sure I haven’t spotted all of them but here is a list of the ones that I did see:

  • Ryan Reynolds – He played an ex-lover of Sadie and asked if she wanted to give it another shot, before he actually got shot. He plays Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Anthony Mackie – Played a Bounty Hunter and he got shot before he crashed into a car. Mackie of course is the current Captain America.
  • Sebastian Stan – Played another Bounty Hunter who is trying to bring in Cole, thinking Cole is the infamous Tax Man. Stan plays The Winter Soldier in the MCU.
  • Tim Blake Nelson – He is the one who tries to torture Cole in one of the early scenes. He played The Leader in The Incredible Hulk and will reprise his role in the upcoming Captain America movie “New World Order” which is slated to premiere in 2024.
  • John Cho – He plays a Bounty Hunter who gets shot before he can even finish a sentence. Although he doesn’t play a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet, and I am hoping Marvel will eventually cast him in one way or another, John Cho is worth mentioning. He plays Captain Sulu in Star Trek. He would make such a great addition to the MCU and I hope Kevin Feige will pick him up sooner or later.

What I didn’t like about Ghosted

Sometimes the movie is paper thin in terms of story and plotlines. For instance, Sadie is almost invincible. Which is ok by me. She is the co-lead for the movie. Cole however has some major plot issues.

Cole starts out as a simple farmer with no combat experience at all. However, over the course of the movie, we see Cole turn into some sort of wrestler who can take on trained criminals and operatives. He never gets shot and the only one who actually gives him a bruise is Sadie when she knocks him unconscious.

Also, the fact that the CIA would let Cole go undercover to a meeting with one of the most notorious criminals in the world without any training in hand-to-hand combat, handguns, or being undercover, doesn’t quite compute.

But I guess this movie isn’t what that was about. The movie is more to have a good time and escape reality for a few hours and to have a good time.

I would recommend Ghosted

I would recommend the movie. The movie is fun, it has got a lot of good comedy and the on-screen chemistry between Ana de Armas and Chris Evans is undeniable. They proved that in The Gray Man and again in this movie.

It is also good to see that Chris Evans can do more than just being Captain America. Evans has quite a range and this comedy proves that after playing a father in Defending Jacob, as well as a psychopath in The Gray Man, he can also do comedy.

The same goes for Ana de Armas, although I am not very familiar with her movies, I liked her in this movie a lot. She’s more than a pretty face. She’s a pretty face who can act.

On top of that, Ghosted is the highest-grossing Apple+ movie at the moment. The completion rate is 20% higher than any other movie on Apple+.

Per Deadline: “The star power of Chris Evans and Ana de Armas in Apple TV+’s latest movie Ghosted helped propel the movie to outperform nearly every other Apple TV+ movie premiers in the past year. Ghosted nailed the winning combination of action-packed adventure with romance and drama, offering something for everyone in the household. If early viewership is any indication of its continued success, audiences won’t be ghosting this breakout performer for the streamer.”
