This guide explains where, when and how you can get your first mount in Diablo 4. We’ll teach you how to use it and what advantages it offers!
How to unlock the mount in Diablo 4
You’ll be able to unlock access to your mount at the very start of Act 4. This requires all three previous acts to have been completed, regardless of order.
Once you complete the “Speak with Donan the Elder” quest step for the “A Master’s Touch” in Act 4, you’ll be able to speak with Donan again to start the “Mount: Donan’s Favor” quest.
The quest “Mount: Donan’s Favor” will ask you to go speak to Oskar, the Stable Master in Kyovashad.
Upon arrival, you will have a chat with the Stable Master who will give you a horse for free.
You will be given a standard Old Nell Steed upon completing the quest, as shown below.
Additionally, you can purchase the Grey Steed or Mottled Steed for just 20,000 Gold each.
If you are one of those who bought the game as a pre-purchase you will have access to the Light-bearer mount. If you picked up the Deluxe version of Diablo 4, you will also have access to the Temptation mount.
How to use Mounts in Diablo 4
Once you have acquired a mount, you can call it by pressing Z (PC Default) on your keyboard. Once dismounted, re-mounting will be placed on an 8-second cooldown.
While mounted on a horse, you’ll move quicker than on foot. Your Mounted Speed is determined by your cursor position on PC, or your control stick position on the controller.
Your Diablo 4 mount can get scared around too many monsters. If the bar fills completely you’ll be knocked off. This meter will only fill when you’re actively being attacked or aggroed and is shown above the Sprint charges
While mounted, press SPACE (PC Default) for a burst of speed to pass through enemies. This has three charges, with a cooldown of 8 seconds per charge.
You’ll also have the option to launch a Dismount Attack, which deals damage in an area around you. This is performed by pressing 1 (PC Default).
Finally, you have the option to dismount by pressing either Z, or Right Mouse Button while mounted.
How to Customize Your Mount
While Mount Armors and Trophies are purely cosmetic and offers no gameplay advantage, it’s a fun customization open that can leave your trusty new mount feeling protected.
To swap the Cosmetic of your mount, speak to a Stable Master and you’ll be able to change the Armor Trophies on your Mount, in addition to switching which Mount your currently using.
Mounts and their cosmetics are available in-game outside of just paid cosmetics. Some foes, including Treasure Goblins, can drop additional cosmetics or mount styles.
Here are some examples of mounts that have been customized. Keep in mind that the mount on the following photos is the Light-bearer Mount, which was included as part of the pre-order bonus.
Why Use a Mount in Diablo 4
Having a mount in Diablo 4 makes traveling around the world of Sanctuary a lot easier. It saves you time and makes avoiding mobs a lot easier since you can outrun them. It also makes completing Sidequests and other Renown Tasks that much easier.
Keep in mind that using the Mount too often can leave you under-leveled from skipping non-required enemies in the Campaign which can result in some tougher encounters later on.
Enjoy Sanctuary on your new mount!
