Secret Invasion Episode 3 Review: Betrayed

Manfred by Manfred|

Secret Invasion episode 3 deals with betrayal from all sides but the ones closest to you hurt the most. The question is: Who can you trust?

Secret Invasion episode 3 takes us back to 1998

In Secret Invasion episode 3, we go back to 1998 and we watch Nick Fury get a coffee at a diner and meet with his wife. It becomes apparent that it is not his wife but a Skrull posing as his wife. She supported Fury all the way and grieved after he was taken by the Blip.

And then she celebrated his triumphant return to life after the events of Infinity War and Endgame were undone. But felt betrayed by him after he left to save the world. It is events like these that define a relationship.

Secret Invasion episode 3

I understand that when you have a duty to perform for your country you have to go in order to make the world a better place. But leaving your wife like that while you are off, putting your life on the line, is tough.

Will your husband ever come back? Or will he be killed in the line of duty? That is the question and I understand that you will live in your life in fear.

By the end of the episode, Priscilla receives a call from another Skrull who sounds suspiciously like James Rhodes.

This raises the question if Priscilla is still on the side of Fury or if she has defected and joined the rebellion alongside Gravik. It would be the ultimate betrayal because it is a betrayal that you don’t see coming.

G’iah and Gravik are looking for the mole

In Secret Invasion episode 3 G’iah and Gravik are looking for the one who betrayed them to the cops. It’s clear that it can’t be Brogan. Unless of course, he broke during the torture session of the previous session. G’iah however tells Gravik that she would lie since she is a pretty good liar.

And this is true but G’iah also showed signs that she feels that she is fighting for the wrong side in the last episode. The body language and facial expressions kind of give it away. She saw the genetic engineering for a project that we don’t know about yet but it looks dangerous.

The show moves on to a museum and the cantina of the museum. Gravik and Talos are having a chat about why so many joined Gravik. Even G’iah, Talos’s daughter joined his cause.

A lot of recruits from Gravik betrayed Talos and show their warmonger nature in the museum cantina. They betrayed the ideology of peaceful co-existence between humans and Skrulls. Instead, they want to take over the planet.

The debate gets heated when Gravik starts taunting Talos but when Talos wants to take action the entire room turns out to be Skrull. They are Gravik’s most loyal companions and they would fight for his life in order to make sure the war that Gravik wages is won.

The betrayal of Talos

The betrayal however is the betrayal of Talos. Secret Invasion episode 3 shows that Talos has lost a lot of followers because they didn’t believe that humans and Skrulls can co-exist. Instead, they look to dominate the planet and either kill humans or enslave them.

It becomes more apparent that Gravik is using the negative gut feelings and plays into fear and the anger a lot of the Skrulls hold towards their lost war.

Secret Invasion episode 3

In the previous episode, Gravik’s conversations are close to the Skrulls comic book counterpart: A race of warmongers who look to take over entire civilizations.

They have lost against Earth multiple times, most notably versus the Fantastic Four. But they haven’t been introduced yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So we have Nick Fury and his merry band of brothers to stop the Skrulls with the help of the good Skrulls.

The thing that stings Talos the most in Secret Invasion episode 3 about those who betrayed him is that his own daughter G’iah has joined the Skrull rebellion. Talos gets taunted with that fact in every other scene. It shows the love he has for G’iah.

Talos and Fury patch it up

In last week’s episode, Talos and Fury had a fallout over the amount of Skrulls who are on Earth. In Secret Invasion episode 3, Fury is made to beg for Talos’s help. And he does, together with the intel of agent Sonya they hunt for a high-placed official named Robert Fairbanks in order to stop the hit on a UN plane by a submarine.

Fury is a good shot and not above hostage-taking and blackmail. It is what makes him a good agent. During the torture session, Talos gets up and makes a phone call for the code word in order to stop the hit. And much to my surprise it’s G’iah who picks up.

As it turns out, G’iah’s been a double agent all this time. Working for Gravik to see what he is up to. And that is a plot twist that I did not see coming. I thought that it was pretty much established that G’iah joined the rebellion in order to fight for the domination of Earth.

And then there was an even bigger twist. After she got the code to stop the hit on the plane, she was told by Talos to get the hell out of New Skrullios and she does but is blocked by Gravik who was on to her.

They have a conversation and Gravik shoots G’iah in the chest. The question is: Is she really dead? If so then what would happen? Talos loves his daughter so much, will it spur him on and make him fight Gravik even harder?

And it is interesting that Marvel continues to play with the healing factor that several Marvel characters have in the comic books. In Secret Invasion episode 3 it shows that Gravik apparently has an accelerated healing factor too, judging by his hand, healing superquick after Talos stabs in his hand, and while Gravik feels it, it heals perfectly fine.

The answers to my questions lay in the episodes ahead of us. But it is quite clear that the writers wanted the viewer to be shocked and I have to say that I am very shocked by the plot twists.
