Secret Invasion Episode 5 Review: Harvest

Manfred by Manfred|

Secret Invasion episode 5 is the penultimate episode of the show. Will Earth be taken over by Gravik or will Fury be in time to stop him?

Secret Invasion episode 5 is the penultimate episode of the show. Many plotlines come together in this episode while it sets up the grand finale of next week.

G’iah is ALIVE!

If you said “G’iah is alive” in Boris Karloff’s voice then you are completely correct for doing so. If you don’t know who Boris Karloff is, he is the director and actor in the first ever Frankenstein movie from the 1930s. But all that aside because a lot has happened in Secret Invasion episode 5.

Secret Invasion episode 5

First of all, G’iah is ALIVE! I know she was hot and killed by Gravik but as it turns out, the machine and laboratory she discovered was to create Super Skrulls. We know Gravik is one and in possession of an accelerated healing factor.

But guess what! G’iah also used the machine and is a Super Skrull and possesses an accelerated healing factor too.

So we see the scene where she got shot and got up as if nothing happened. Her healing factor saved her. The question about G’iah is, what other powers did she get? We know that Gravik has Groot’s powers and he can extend his arm and the healing factor of course. But which one did G’iah get besides what she has now?

With G’iah alive, I think it would also serve as a morale booster since they just lost their elected leader Talos. He was stabbed last week by Gravik. Sonya and G’iah cremated him in a very private ceremony.

I think that is the last we ever saw of him. This is too bad because in the episodes prior to his untimely death plus the Captain Marvel movie I came to respect the character a lot.

The Harvest

Gravik and Fury have a phone call about meeting up. Apparently, Skrull Rhodes and Gravik staged the kidnapping of the president in order to have video coverage of it. They used the video to convince Congress to bombard new Skrullos.

In Secret Invasion episode 5 we are introduced to something called The Harvest. Gravik threatened Fury with it. And up until that point, nobody knows what that is.

But during a car ride with Sonya, Fury opens up about the Harvest. The Harvest happened during fights with the Avengers on Earth. They get hit, they bleed and the blood drops DNA. Fury had a clean-up team to collect the DNA but some of them were Skrulls and in particular Gravik.

Gravik decided to hold on to the DNA and used it to create a Super Skrull. And G’iah used the same machine. So I am thinking that there is going to be a showdown between the 2 and I don’t mean like a Spaghetti Western and 2 Cowboys at noon.

Fury in the meantime is traveling to Finland. We see him at a cemetery but he is grabbing his gun and his eyepatch. When he walks, there is someone talking to him on the phone and Fury tells the person that he needs the person’s help. I wonder who it is.

Gravik loses authority

In Secret Invasion episode 5, the Skrulls in New Skrullos are fed up with Gravik’s leadership. Where we saw Gravik’s people praise their leader and up to the point of worshipping him, a lot of them in the camp are revolting against him.

The Skrulls find that Gravik has become a monster. His aggressive tactics to take over the world goes against their nature. So I am thinking that the Skrulls who joined Gravik aren’t the warmongers they are in the comics. I think Gravik is a product of the war: a traumatized kid who is just out for revenge.

Gravik’s history has also to do with Fury’s failure to keep his promise and Gravik’s quest for world domination is part of that. Why wait for Fury when you can take the planet that you are on? And that’s exactly what Gravik did with Rhodes in Secret Invasion episode 5.

Together with Skrull Rhodes, Gravik’s army tried to kidnap the president of the USA. But Fury and Talos foiled their plan. So now Rhodes tries to convince the president that it was the Russians and Skrulls working together and that he should strike back with an attack on New Skrullos which is based on Russian soil. It would lead to World War 3.

So that’s what Gravik’s Skrulls are up to, starting World War 3.

The History of Super Skrull

The Super Skrull has a rich history in the comics. He was created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

He was a pivotal player in the Kree/Skrull war. He is also the arch nemesis and rival of Captain Mar-vell.

The Super Skrull was originally designed to take on the Fantastic Four and he was given the powers of the Fantastic Four so that’s fire, stretching, rock, and invisibility.

It was eventually Reed Richard’s big brain who took him to the Skrull homeworld and stopped his artificial powers and the Super Skrull was defeated.

The Super Skrull from Secret Invasion also artificially infused powers but was taken from the Harvest. And the scary part is that he also has access to the DNA of Carol Danvers / Ms Marvel who is powered by technology from the Kree, the arch-enemies of the Skrulls.

Imagine what a single Super Skrull could do on the Kree homeworld. Turn the tide of war and never stop trying the conquer the universe.
