Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Off the Cuff

Manfred by Manfred|

Ben leaps into the body of a bounty hunter and something that looks like a standard leap turns out to be much more. Meanwhile, Addison is pondering about the map with information to bring Ben home.

Ben returns as a Bounty Hunter

Quantum Leap S2x9 starts with Ben being cuffed to a guy named Kevin. Kevin has a bounty on him for skimming from clients and money laundering. Ben is about to take him in. He calls the bounty hunter office that he is about to bring Kevin in and he asks for the phone number of Hannah Carson since it is April 10, 1970.

While Ben and Kevin drive off in Ben’s Mustang and when Kevin asks for a bathroom break, Addison appears. He tells Ben that Kevin has to stay alive instead of dead. If Ben hadn’t interfered with his quantum leap, Kevin would have been murdered by the criminals he worked for. While Ben and Addison talk, they hear a loud noise from the bathroom. It’s Kevin who tries to escape.

While the two men return to the car and continue their journey to their destination, an armored car tries to push them off the road. Instead, Ben’s Mustang’s brakes are stuck and they go off-road with the car completely in shambles. Right before the car explodes, Ben dislocated his shoulder and asks Kevin to get out of the car and save him before the car explodes.

Kevin reunites with his brother

Ben got injured badly and his shoulder needs medical attention. Kevin tells him that his brother is a doctor and they live on a farm not too far from where they are.

Ben’s shoulder is tended to by Kevin’s brother and it isn’t until we see his wife that things get interesting. it’s none other than Hannah Carson. Hannah got married to Kevin’s brother and they have a son.

While at dinner, Kevin urges Ben to talk about this hot gal he met in Cairo and with whom he spent the night. Ben recognizing Hannah, does not want to talk about it. But Hannah finds out that Ben is inside the bounty hunter’s body. He storms out of the room to catch his breath but Hannah runs after him. The 2 catch up and Ben’s morale has gone down by a lot since Hannah has moved on and is married with a child.

He tells Hannah that to him Cairo was only yesterday and she replies that it has been 9 years since Cairo for her.

The bounty hunters come to collect

Jeffrey, the son of Hannah, says that Kevin is trying to make a run for it. They check the basement and catch Kevin red-handed while he is trying to take the skimmed diamonds.

Just as Kevin tries to make a run, the bounty hunters from the office Ben called earlier arrive. They want to kill Kevin. Ben and Hannah and their quick thinking come up with the idea to electrocute them in the basement of Hannah’s house. The first 2 are electrocuted quickly and down for the count. The 3rd one is however wearing shoes with rubber soles and a fight ensues and Hannah and Ben are losing until Kevin gets up and slaps her down with the back of a rifle.

Outside Ben has a chat with Addison who informs him that Hannah’s husband will pass away in 18 months. Ben wants to run back to the house to inform Hannah but just as he starts running, he leaps and never gets the message to Hannah.

The fan theories are wild

The fans are theorizing that Jeffrey is Ben and Hannah’s lovechild from their encounter in Cairo. Since it is exactly 9 years ago and Jeffrey is exactly that age. The reasoning is that since it was not done during that time to be a single mother, Hannah found herself a lover to cover it up. Could that ring a bell?

Also, elsewhere in the episode, Ian has started to delve into the code given to him by Tom in the midseason finale. Would he find what they are looking for? The question is, how do you implement such a code into Ziggy?

Another thing is that Addison and Tom are getting married. But to be honest, I am having a hard time liking Tom. He hasn’t been onscreen enough for me to have sympathy for him. Also, Addison and Ben, I still consider them endgame as many fans do as well. But I am also slowly gearing more towards Hannah and Ben, the impossible love story.

These questions will most likely be answered in season 3. Speaking of which, the show is still yet to be renewed. And here is hoping of course that it will happen. If they do do a season 3 then I hope there will be a tribute to Matt Dale. Matt Dale was a podcaster who loved Quantum Leap, he sadly passed away right before Christmas and I will miss his podcasts and insights on the show.

Quantum Leap actress talks relationship with Hannah

Quantum Leap’s second half of the season has started well. The plotline to get Ben back to the present is taking off slowly but it will be a huge thing no doubt. The big question will be: How will Ben fare back in the present? Will he go out to find Hannah, especially now that Hannah is getting married to Tom?

Caitlin Bassett, who plays Addison, has recently revealed in an interview that she fought against the writer’s idea to have a love triangle in the show between Hannah, Addison, and Ben.

“I remember fighting for it on the day because that scene had a slightly different ending in the original script,” the actress recalls. “I remember being like, ‘I don’t like that,’ because at this point, Addison actually cares about Hannah. Addison and Hannah have a relationship. They might not speak directly, but Hannah knows who [Addison is] and that will be explored further.”

And I agree with that. A love triangle has been done over and over and the originality of it is far and between. It is more interesting to have it the way it is so Hannah and Ben and Addison and Tom instead of the impossible love triangle with everyone traveling through time through quantum leaping, being stuck in time, and a hologram.
