Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Family Treasure

Manfred by Manfred|

Ben Leaps into one of three sisters, named Nadia, looking for the treasure their father, a Lebanese Christian, died trying to find.

Reading the will

Ben wakes up in the body of Nadia, the youngest of 3 sisters, Dean, Sarah, and Nadia. While he acclimatizes to the situation, the will of the girls’ dad, who recently passed away, is being read to them.

After the items are handed out, the girls start fighting over how little they got. But when Ben is playing with his ship, their lawyer bumps into him and the ship falls on the ground and reveals a map. Dear old dad was a treasure hunter and sent the girls on a treasure hunt.

Addison shows up as a hologram to inform Ben that one of the sisters will die hunting for the treasure alone. So after a little convincing, the 3 sisters go together on the craziest adventure of their lives.

Once upon a time in Mexico

After reading the map, the 3 end up in a small town in Mexico and are looking for a photo of their dad. When they found it, they solved the first riddle. After that, the girls try to identify the spot on the map only to find out the map has been stolen. But Ben’s photographic memory comes into play and with the notes he has, the 3 of them manage to reproduce the map.

With that, the girls find the well of the picture. Ben and Dean of the girls want to jump down but the 3rd, Sarah, refuses. Until Ben throws a rock into the well and they hear that the well has dried up. With a rope, the 3 climb down.

The 3 of them quickly figure out that the final hint has to do with a hollow wall. They find the hollow wall and it comes with a key. And just as they grab the key, they are held at gunpoint.

The man at the bar who stole the original map shows up and holds the girls at gunpoint. And he is not alone, the lawyer who read the will at the start of the show, also shows up. He followed the girls to the treasure.

While they discuss, the lawyer steals the key. But the heavy sound of the and the reverb of that collapses the cave. The lawyer dies but Dean, the middle sister, survives, albeit injured. A corset saves her life.

And that’s when Dean’s big secret comes out. She is non-binary. And she is not the only one who carries a big secret. Sarah, the oldest sister, is getting a divorce. The 3 girls are finally growing closer together.

The final hint takes the girls to a church

The final hint takes the girls to a church where the treasure supposedly is. They find a hatchet with a lock and the key fits. But the final riddle proves to be difficult. There are four leaves for every season.

When Ben looks up, he sees a painting of a woman holding a leaf for every season so they turn the key 4x clockwise and the hatchet opens. There is a treasure in there and when Ben takes it out, he accidentally triggers the dam to flood the village.

The village is flooded but the girls manage to hide behind a rock and survive. They save the box as well but it is empty until one of them finds an extra bottom. At the bottom, there is a note that says that the biggest treasure is at home.

The girls head home and they have grown closer together, which I guess is what Dad wanted. At home, they are sisters again. Until Ben figures out the note and hits up a painting.

There is the $40 million hidden behind the painting. It is all gemstones like rubies and diamonds. The girls are rich. Right before Ben leaps, he asks Sarah to post a letter in 1970. It is a letter to Hannah to have her husband’s heart checked.

Team Quantum Leap has a lot to do in this episode

Team Quantum Leap has deciphered the DARPA code to bring Ben back home. But it could take years.

Meanwhile, Rachel, who fixed Ziggy in earlier episodes, is forced to introduce her boss, Gideon. Gideon is the one who blackmailed Ian into giving up classified information but it was Jenn who prevented that. In Quantum Leap Episode 7, Rachel patches Ziggy and it works until Gideon finds out.

Addison and Tom are supposed to get married and it causes a shockwave to the team. The team is baffled and Ian is annoyed that he doesn’t get to organize the wedding. But after helping Ben she is having second thoughts about it all.

My thoughts on the episode

I loved this week’s episode. There was a lot to do with the treasure hunt. We saw Ben’s potential fully used and it was just about Ben this week. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ben when he is with Hannah but sometimes when he is alone, we get to see what Ben is truly capable of. Like the use of his photographic memory to solve a big puzzle. That is brilliant writing from the writers.

Addison getting married to Tom was kind of weird. I would have thought that their marriage was thwarted by the return of Ben or Hannah suddenly showing up in Team Quantum Leap headquarters as a shocker. That is IF Hannah is still alive. But after being with Ben, Addison returns to Tom to tell her that the wedding is off. She still has strong feelings for Ben.

The best part was the conversation about non-binaries in the 1950s. For them, there weren’t a lot of options to express their sexual identity. And the show is breaking another glass ceiling to take something like that out of taboo. So, great writing and great acting as well by guest star Wilder Yari, who is also non-binary in real life.

I can’t stop complimenting the show to hire a non-binary for that role. They could have hired a straight woman to get the job done but picked someone who knows how it feels to be non-binary and it showed on screen.
