It’s finally happened, another big Diablo 4 secret has been discovered and completed. This guide will take you step by step how to acquire your own Lucky Coin and Ring of Misfortune.
It’s been about ten months since the last big Diablo 4 Secret, the Discovery of the Forlorn Hovel. Now, another secret that secret hunters in Diablo 4 have been chasing forever is finally active and fully working!
The Lucky Coin and Ring of Misfortune have been in the game files since launch, but only recently appeared to have become active.
The Lucky Coin
This Lucky Coin is the first piece of the puzzle, which was thought to be in the game since launch. Much like the Forlorn Hovel though, its drop condition wasn’t fully known and may not have been accessible at all, preventing its discovery earlier.
Fast forward a bit to Season 3, and there started to be reports of the Lucky Coin being dropped. From here it was only a matter of time until the secret hunting Discord, Diablo 4 – Not Finding a Cow Level, found the exact trigger for this event and item to drop.
There had been theories for a long time that the Lucky Coin was looted from a corpse. It wasn’t known where, why, or how though. Despite asking for information from every player who had dropped a Lucky Coin, we eventually found a partial answer, and it was indeed corpses.
It doesn’t drop from just any Corpse though, and there are extra steps, which made it hard to pin down. But thanks to Discord member Jimpen, who did a ton of testing and looking into it we know what those conditions are now.
First, you need to be under the effect of a Greed Shrine. This is easy enough to acquire, but it’s one of the shortest Shrine buffs in the game, so time is of the essence.
Next, it’s not just any corpse, but one spawned by a mini event. It has to be a corpse created by a Monster slaying an NPC. This event is quite common and you’ve no doubt ran past them time and time again.
From Large snakes to Goatment, nearly every monster type has a similar event like this and it varies by region.
Then you loot the Corpse, where you need to meet the final condition. Testing has shown that there’s a Lucky Hit Check at this point, and Higher Lucky Hit Chance means a higher chance of of getting the Lucky Coin. We recommend 40% or higher.
So the Lucky Coin is now in our hands, what do we do with it?
The Wishing Well
Yep, there’s a Wishing Well in Diablo 4. It’s only active when you have the Lucky Coin in your possession. It’s located just East of Carrigar in Scosglen.
It looks rather unassuming, unless you pay close attention and notice the markings on the ground that surrounds it. There are a total of six markings here, but the sixth won’t be active until Vessel of Hatred, at least it’s assumed such.
If you were to come here by yourself and just your own Lucky Coin, you’d be able to toss it in and earn the Well-wisher Achievement, which comes with the Well-wisher Suffix for player title.
However, if you have some friends or folk willing to help out where their own coins, it goes further than this.
Obtaining The Ring of Misfortune
Remember those Runes and how there are six of them, but only five are visible and active? Well, that ties into the next part of this secret. If you’ve correctly guessed what’s required next, fantastic.
Group Acquisition Method
Getting the Ring of Misfortune from the Wishing Well requires five unique classes. This can be any combination of five different classes, regardless of their release date.
With a party size of four, how would you get five people here in any coordinated group? The answer is simple, you remove a party member after arriving, and they choose to stay in your World. Then you invite the 5th and have them teleport over.
With all 5 classes gathered, you can drop your Lucky Coins one by one. Each coin deposited causes a different effect, starting with applying the Unlucky Debuff.
Below are all the effects that will occur and the order when they occur.

Solo Acquisition Method
For those unable to find a group, worry not, as the Ring of Misfortune can also be gotten solo. This will, however, take a lot of extra effort on our part to pull off, and will only result in a single ring for the effort.
To start, we’ll need to have characters of at least 5 different classes made. There’s no need to level them, so go ahead and skip the campaign and, more importantly, move them to Scosglen before logging out.
Next, we’ll need to head out and collect five Lucky Coins. This can be time-consuming, but we can make the process slightly easier by acquiring the Ahavarion, Spear of Lycander Mythic Item. With all the methods for farming and crafting Mythic items, this should be easy enough to acquire.
Then we can simply head to the area with our necessary corpse event and slay Elites nearby. If we luck into rolling a Greed Shines, then we can quickly collect our coins. Just be sure to let the cooldown reset if a Greed Shrine isn’t rolled.
After getting the Lucky Coins, place them in the stash and withdraw one per class for the event. Then, what we need to do now is simply deposit each coin, swap characters, and repeat until all coins have been deposited. It is recommended to wait until the well stops bubbling after each coin before swapping characters.
Ring Analysis
Once the Meteors stop, the fifth and final Lucky Coin can be deposited. Once deposited, the Ring of Misfortune will drop for all players.
The Ring of Misfortune is a collectible item, rather than an effective piece of gear. It has a bunch of Inherent Affixes, all set to a value of 13. How Unlucky!
The other notable effects of this ring include the Unique debuff it applies called “Dread”.
This gives a sense that there may be more to this ring to potentially dig into, as there isn’t a real reason for this unique effect to be shown this way. Though it’s worth nothing, this is an indicator for its Unique Affix being active.
The Ring of Misfortune is also entirely unaffected by Masterworking, as its stats do not increase. It also can’t be upgraded past Masterworking Stage 3, displaying the message “Masterworking Failed” when attempting to go for Stage 4. It will, however, consume the resources, regardless of this.
And that’s the end of the secret! Huge shoutout again to the secret hunting discord, Diablo 4 – Not Finding a Cow Level for the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. Props to Jimpen for discovering the Lucky Coin method after so long, and Ecledia for Recording the event.
UPDATE: With Season 6 and the Vessel of Hatred Expansion, the Secret Cow Level progress continues, and a new set of Relics has been found!
