A Major Tom version in Huttese, strong 80s vibes, pirates, and the promise of a very different and new Star Wars experience is what we get in the second trailer for the upcoming Skeleton Crew series.
In the first scene, we see Wim and Fern, two of the protagonists who appear to be waiting while their parents talk to the principal of the school. Wim’s father claims that something is unacceptable. So far this looks like a regular show from the 80’s or 90’s. Just a bunch of kids, becoming friends and getting into trouble. Right?
Next, we see them stumble upon a ship that we know is called The Onyx Cinder. I have the theory that this ship used to belong to a pirate. My reasoning behind this is because of the same markings that Gorian Shard’s cruiser had in Season 3 of The Mandalorian.
The kids get a little too excited and after pressing a bunch of buttons they end up taking off to an unknown location. They end up docking at some type of spaceport that is filled with the people you would not like to associate with as a kid.
They ask for a (very disgusting) meal and when it’s time to pay, Wim shows Republic credits. The stranger mentions that it is an “Old Republic” credit but it’s important to point out that since this is now the era of the New Republic, he is referring to the Galactic Republic that existed prior to the Galactic Empire, not the Old Republic era where Revan became a legend.
A few seconds later, Wim is pushing his meal into the fire and then starts running away. This is a quick scene so you might have missed it, but next to Wim, we can see Vane, the pirate who escaped after Bo-Katan and Din Djarin destroyed Gorian Shard’s forces. He is always bad news, so I am sure he will have multiple appearances.
That’s when Jod (Jude Law) enters the play and joins forces with the lost kids. It doesn’t take much to predict that they are going to embark on a huge adventure that will change their lives.
Pirates, treasures, kids looking for adventure, their worried parents, and a mysterious yet charismatic lead character are everything you could wish for in an older-style show but we also have some elements that can’t be missing from a Star Wars series. An odd droid, many alien species, and the weird factor in the shape of some strange creatures.
The treasure room that appears nearly at the end of the trailer makes me wonder if there will be some sort of “mystic” element. Will something dreadful appear and hunt them after retrieving an item?
There’s a location that reminds me of Canto Bight. It looks expensive, and fancy and probably houses many illegal activities. So, it’s the perfect place for our protagonists to find that room full of riches.
There is even a space yacht that looks like something Crimson Dawn would use. Is there a possibility that we see some of the important criminal syndicates?
This series promises to be something completely different from what we’ve experienced so far. According to an interview made by StarWars.com, Skeleton Crew is heavily influenced by works like E.T., The Goonies, Indiana Jones, and Monkey Island.
On top of everything, we got to hear the 80’s hit song Major Tom by Peter Schilling with the major difference that it’s in Huttese! This is probably the first time that a non-Star Wars song has been used for a mainstream series.
It’s hard to tell if it will actually appear in the show or if it’s just for the trailer but that is still very cool. It really enhances the entire 80’s vibes.
To be honest I was skeptical when the first trailer was released but all of the things I previously mentioned things have significantly increased my anticipation for Skeleton Crew. This trailer really did its job! I appreciate that we have a new genre in Star Wars. Frankly, I’d like that to happen more often.
With Skeleton Crew coming out on December 3rd, it appears that this is going to be a perfect series for families to watch together during the holidays. Especially because according to Jon Watts, co-creator of the series, you don’t have to know anything about Star Wars to watch and enjoy the series.
