Star Wars Skeleton Crew Episode 6: Breakdown and Easter Eggs

Adrian by Adrian|

Jod’s treason left Wim, Neel, KB, and Fern on their own. In the sixth episode of Skeleton Crew, our favorite group of kids must think of a way to return to At Attin while also dealing with their personal differences.

KB’s malfunctioning

Having cybernetics implanted into people’s bodies is something fairly common in the Star Wars universe. Sometimes it’s to get enhanced, often it is to save a life. Regardless of the reason, being a cyborg comes with both benefits and downsides.

It’s odd that after so many decades, there is very little mention of what could happen to a cyborg in case they do not receive any maintenance.

It’s understandable that something so minor isn’t explored when the entire galaxy is facing far more concerning problems but that doesn’t make the question vanish.

KB’s mother said in Episode 3 that she was worried because of her daughter’s medical treatment. My immediate thought was that she had to take some meds or injections but at least we now know that it’s something far more important.

KB gets injured

When KB almost stopped functioning, I thought that they made the scene more dramatic than necessary. It turns out she would have died if Wim didn’t save her.

Her organs would have completely stopped working as well. Her implants could reboot at any time, but her organs definitely wouldn’t.

In the grand scheme of things this might not have been too important but I really liked that this question was solved in a simple but convincing way.

The importance of arguing

KB, Neel, Fern, and Wim don’t have that many things in common, but their adventure has made all of them friends.

Naturally, after spending a few days under so much pressure and almost dying many times, their emotions are at the highest. When this happens, conflicts can occur over almost anything. In this case, it was because of how Fern behaves with KB.

Due to her accident, KB is simply not capable of doing some things that are physically demanding. Fern treats her like that doesn’t happen at all and while I think her intention is to make her friend feel normal, it’s clearly not how KB feels.

After they argue and split into two groups, each one has yet another close encounter with death, and that makes them realize how little their argument matters compared to other things.

Conflict is one of those things that many people dislike and commonly avoid. I’m of the idea that it has to do more with the fact that you have to deal with another person rather than having a problem with conflict itself because conflict can result in the improvement of many things, especially personal relationships.

This episode is a simple yet good example of this. Sometimes arguing and fighting are necessary for a relationship to mature and evolve.

Skeleton Crew group hug

These kids are growing at such a fast rate that they might be unrecognizable by the end of the series compared to the first episode.

Well, aside from Wim who is almost the same though I am not going to complain about that in a third-episode breakdown. At least in this episode he finally realized how bad his instinct is.

Nothing beats a good speech

Jod might be a treasonous snake but we can’t deny that he has a way with words. Honestly, it’s probably how he has managed to trick and then betray so many people.

As someone who is only driven by the promise of a big treasure, Jod understands what to say in order to convince his fellow pirates.

In very pirate fashion, a song about the legendary pirate Tak Rennod describes his legacy and most importantly, the unmeasurable treasure that he was tracking before disappearing forever.

Tak Rennod was the captaion of the Onyx Cinder ship before it disappeared and crash-landed on At Attin

Under normal circumstances, the other pirates would not even listen to Jod’s words but after the recent events they are intrigued about the origin of the valuable Old Republic credits.

Captain Silvo makes his case

The way he phrases it makes it completely irresistible for anyone who has ever dreamed about having more than enough credits for the rest of their lives. Which includes every single pirate to ever live.

I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with Captain Brutus, but legends aren’t written about people who are just fine. If the stories about At Attin are right, then these pirates need someone with the vision and drive to do everything in his power to take it.

I’d really like to see the pirates go to At Attin just to see how the local government would react. Though it would be sad to see the kids’ home be raided and destroyed in the process. It would be a good plot twist, it wouldn’t hurt to have at least one in the show.

New Year, new ship

The Onyx Cinder is a one-of-a-kind ship. Its design is robust and simple but memorable with that very specific paint job. It might not be as cool as some of the most famous ships in Star Wars but for this series it’s more than enough.

The mechanism that the kids use to escape from the junkyard was one of my favorite things in this episode. I don’t remember any ship doing something remotely close to that. It’s like watching a snake shed its skin but actually end up looking like a totally different animal.

Onyx Cinder no more

Maybe the Onyx Cinder was so heavily modified that it changed its entire appearance and its way of operating, maybe not. Nonetheless, it’s the perfect metaphor to represent the recent events.

Since Jod and SM-33 are no longer a part of the crew, the entire pirate essence of the group has been left behind. The kids are on their own and they will use their own means to finally return to their homeworld.

Final thoughts

This episode is probably my least favorite of the series so far. While it developed KB and Fern’s friendship, it didn’t do a lot for the entire story. Considering we only have two episodes left I expected the pace to be quicker, especially because it only lasted a little over thirty minutes.

Wim continues to be almost the same boy we met in the first episode, which isn’t a completely bad thing but if we compare him to the other three kids the difference in growth is quite notable.

With that said, it was very wholesome to see him offer his friendship to KB when she was down and her responding with calling him a Jedi.

There are still many things that need to be addressed and I’m getting the feeling that we are not getting all the answers we want. With the huge praise that the show is getting it’s easy to think that Disney and Lucasfilm have the intention of making more seasons of Skeleton Crew. I’d love that but I also want at least a few questions answered when this season ends.

Easter eggs and references

Film director legend

Tak Rennod is a nod to director Richard Donner. Donner was responsible for none other than The Goonies, arguably, the biggest inspiration for Skeleton Crew.

Back to Canto Bight

A strange alien can be seen when Jod emerges from the mountain. This strange species appeared for the first time in The Last Jedi inside the Canto Bight casino.
