What are the Hidden Trails
Hidden Trails are linear traversal challenges in the open world where Naoe has to parkour a difficult terrain from the starting point to the end, where a treasure chest awaits.
Several of the Paths are part of The Assassins story arc for Naoe where she discovers the secrets of the Assassin’ Creed in Japan and her own family’s past and role in all of this.
The Hidden Trails are labeled on the map with red markers and their names start with “Path of …”. You can complete them at any point. There is no combat involved on these Paths (except at the Kii Assassin Outpost). The gear piece you receive in the end, will usually try to match the current level of your character.
There are several visual guides for you to follow to make sure you are staying on the proper path:
- Candles
- Flags
- Painted markings on the rocks
How to start the Path of Chosen
The Path of Chosen starts at the farthest east point in the Iseji Trails, in Kii. Its starting point is right on the edge of the ocean. The Sewara Inari Shrine Viewpoint is probably what you would have discovered closest to it.
The Kumano Hayatama Taisha is on the other side of the river’s delta, to the south. There is a Kakurega just south of that temple.
To get to the start of the Path of Chosen from the Viewpoint, follow the main road until it divides in two. Take the right side, you will end up on a cliff with a view of the sea.

Path of Chosen Walkthrough
Step on the big log and use Naoe’s hook to get to the other side. Jump carefully on the pointy rock to subsequently land on the rock with the big rope attached to it. Walk over it, you’ll see a massive tree with wooden boards that serve as stairs.
Walk over the branches that are marked with yellow paint. You should be able to use Naoe’s hook. This step requires that you use the hook twice, to avoid having any unwanted accidents I recommend that you value precision over speed.
Reminder: Jump off the hook when you are arriving at the high point of your swing to make the perfect transition or Naoe might slip and fall.
This is mostly a linear segment, continue until you see a small waterfall. Proceed to use Naoe’s hook. Follow the yellow marks on the rocks and climb the walls until you can’t continue going forward.
There’s a small hole on the left side, crawl to go through it. You’ll end in a very tight area, just climb up. Pass through the gap in the big rock wall and look for the exit of that small cave.
You’re on the edge with a beautiful view but the fall is quite deep. There’s a small log with its roots attached to the ground just a few steps away from you. Get on top of it and take a few steps until you’re able to use Naoe’s hook. For the following minute you’ll have to climb up, just follow the yellow marks.
The next step is going over a massive tree and getting to the furthest point. Yet again, you’ll have to use Naoe’s hook. Next, you’ll pass a few lamp posts and a dead man.
There’s another tree that will help you get to the other side. This doesn’t require using a hook, just walk in a straight line and head to the right side.
After entering the cave, you’ll see a small body of water. Swim to the other side and climb up. Continue moving forward until you have to use the hook again.
Right after landing, look for the small hole and crawl to get to the other side. Follow the road until you see a small encampment.
There’s a level 40 NPC, the chest is behind him. He will attack as soon as he spots you. This is the Clifftop Yamabushi, he is part of the Yamabushi Imposters quest.
You can fight it in open combat or assassinate him. If he is too high level, you have the option to sneak past him or use the game settings menu to turn on the “Guaranteed Assassination” feature.
We do not have this feature included in our recommended settings to change in Assassin’s Creed Shadows as it is not the way the devs meant for you to play. This feature ignores a lot of unique build opportunities and gameplay features. But it is there to allow you to get out of tough situations or to allow you to feel like you are an assassin from the old AC games (we think).
The Kii Assassin Outpost
Where you fought the crazed NPC, this is the Kii Assassin Outpost. Here you can learn a few bits of the history of Kakushiba ikki.
The NPC will yell “For Lord Nobunaga!”, which makes Naoe wonder how long has this person been living up there.
The Lustrous Pearl Legendary Naginata
After you defeat the deranged person, you receive his weapon, the Legendary Naginata Lustrous Pearl. It comes with the engraving that adds a knockdown on Postured Combo Ender.

Yu-No-Shin’s Headgear
This is an epic headgear piece for Naoe with an embedded Engraving that allows her to remove an additional HP segment when double assassinating targets. It is a good fit for a stealthy build where you remain unseen for as long as possible and avoid open combat.
