How to unlock the quest
You’ll be able to begin this quest once you have talked to Ujisama as part of the Inside Help quest. Inside Help is part of Shinbakufu quest line, specifically where you hunt down The Fool.
To gain Ujisama’s trust, you’ll need to assassinate all of the Twisted Tree members in the quest, The Twisted Tree.
The Twisted Tree
You’ll gain leads a couple of the Takahashi clan as the quest starts. Many of the Twisted Tree quests lead to clues about the target whereabouts.
All of the targets in Kyoto, so you won’t need to travel outside the city to find everyone in the Twisted Tree circle.
It is possible to still find the Twisted Tree members without finding any clues. If you want to kill everyone, Naoe is recommended if you want to be efficient with this.
If you want to spare the innocent and save some time in the process, kill the father first and prepare for a tough battle. Yasuke is recommended for this route.
The Mercy Route
This route will show you how to get all the clues to the Twisted Tree locations as well as showing you how to spare two innocent members.
This route is the shorter of the two at the cost of having a rough combat encounter at the end and losing some loot.
Help Needed
The first quest you’ll have access to is Help Needed. Talk to the merchant in central Kyoto near an umbrella cart.
He’ll tell you of a drunken samurai that’s harassing him. Once the conversation is over, you’ll learn the names of the Twisted Tree circle.
Guard Assignments
You will need to find and confront the family guard of the Takahashi clan. He’ll be in eastern Kyoto, east of Honnoji Temple, and was seen near a sake crate cart.
Loot the guard to find a note where you learn about where the children’s loyalties lie, concluding the quest.
Family Drama
The guards are undisciplined and possess loose lips. Listen in on the guards north of the Imperial Palace in Northern Kyoto.
One of the Takahashi Jiro has changed his patrol route. The note with the new route was left in the bath houses in western Kyoto.
Guard Duty
Loot the note that the guard dropped in the bath house. It is in central Kyoto, north of Kano Painting School, and it was seen inside the Furo of Kyoto.
Dropped Intel
Takahashi Shiro had a public outburst with a fan merchant as his victim. Reach the outburst location in central Kyoto along Nijo Palace’s moat. It was witnessed near a broken fan cart.
Investigate the outburst location and look to the left of the crying woman. Pick up the note on the ground to complete the quest.
Assassinate Takahashi Inoshichi
To free Goro and Ichi-hime while luring the hostile children to you, you’ll need to assassinate Takahashi Inoshichi. He is in southern Kyoto in a well guarded area.
With Inoshichi dead, you’ll automatically spare Goro and Ichi-hime. The other four will come seeking vengeance and arrive at the front gate of their father’s home.
If you left all four alive, all four of them will show up at the same time. Yasuke would be a good choice to combat multiple opponents in this scenario.
Defeat them all and the Twisted Tree will be complete, allowing you to return to Ujisama and get back to the Shinbakufu quest line.
Anything Goro and Ichi-hime would have dropped when killed is instead granted to you when Inoshichi dies.
No Mercy Route
Don’t care about the previous clues and just want a map with all the target’s specific locations? Then this is the section for you!
