How to unlock and complete the quest The Butterfly Collector in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, including should you kill or spare the Gamemaker.

What is The Butterfly Collector

The Butterfly Collector is a Side Quest in Assassin’s Shadows that has you looking for ten Origami Butterflies scattered around Osaka. What first appears to be a game turns into a plot to dissolve a kidnapping circle.

How to start The Butterfly Collector

This quest can be picked by speaking to a woman who goes by the nickname of The Gamemaker immediately after you arrive in Katano. She is West of Katano Castle, next to an Ornament Vendor.

Where to find all the butterflies

This quest has many steps. I recommend that you focus first on finding all ten butterflies and then going after the kidnappers. Mixing these two things doesn’t alter the outcome but it may take longer than necessary.

If you have all the information needed, you still need to find all ten butterflies to complete the quest.

Yellow

Look for a tree that’s surrounded by many houses. North of the Temple of Osaka, past the Gear Vendor.

White #1

The white butterfly is located on a tree next to the middle bridge. Northeast to the Temple of Osaka and fairly close to your Kakurega. If you go there during the day, you could see a lady next to the tree. This butterfly unlocks the quest All Will Be Well.

White #2

This butterfly is technically white but it’s actually a letter that has a clue to find the kidnappers. It is on a tree next to the river, east to the Temple of Osaka. It unlocks the quest One that Got Away.

White #3

The third white butterfly is on a tree surrounded by shrubs, northwest of the Temple of Osaka and southeast of the Kojo Ruins. This one unlocks the quest Find the Child.

Purple

The Purple Butterfly is on a tree next to the river and behind a lamp post southwest of the Nishinomaru Garden.

Red

The Red Butterfly is north of the Temple of Osaka, on the main road that connects to the temple.

Blue

This one is on a tree that’s behind a small shrine. On the west side of the Temple of Osaka.

Pink

The Pink Butterfly is in Fishermen’s District, on a tree that is next to a stable. This is southwest of the Temple of Osaka.

Orange

The Orange Butterfly is on a tree next to the river with a few houses around. East of the Fishermen’s District and south of the Temple of Osaka.

Green

You can find the Green Butterfly in the garden of a house located in a district northeast of the Temple of Osaka and southwest of the Upper Construction Site. To see this one, you need to climb onto the roof.

Assassinate the kidnappers

Mucho

Now that you have found all the butterflies, it’s time to track and eliminate the kidnappers. Mucho is in the middle of a kidnapping in the Kojo Ruins, west of Osaka. As soon as you are spotted she will attempt to escape. Eliminate her on the spot and escort the kid back to his father.

After talking to his feather, the quest Paper Trail opens up. You must look for a paper merchant who has important information to locate the kidnappers. He is just north of the Temple of Osaka inside his house. His information will prove valuable later on.

Richo

This woman is part of the All Will Be Well quest. She is on the bamboo grove located near Noda village. Unlike the previous kidnapper, she will fight back but you can assassinate her if you approach her from the back. Once she is dead, free the child from the warehouse and take her to her mother.

Shucho

You can find Shucho when doing the One That Got Away quest. After freeing the kid, she will run back home. If you look at the road she went, Shucho will be right there. She won’t run away so you can easily assassinate her.

Kacho

To find and kill the leader of the kidnappers you must reveal the remaining information. Since you already talked to the paper merchant, you need to investigate a hideout located in the Fishermen’s District. This part of the quest becomes available after killing Sucho, Mucho, or Richo (doesn’t matter which one), but for practical reasons, I left it for last.

With all the pieces together, you can now find Kacho near the Nishinomaru Garden. Her house is inside the military district, entering through the main entrances will make the guards attack you immediately so it’s better to do it the stealthy way. In her dying breath, Kacho reveals that the Gamemaker is also part of this. You have to return to her.

Kill or spare the Gamemaker

The Gamemaker reveals that all of this was orchestrated in order to stop the kidnappings once and for all, but that doesn’t mean she’s innocent. She has no name and asks you to give her one. It really doesn’t matter which one you pick.

Now you must decide if she dies or gets a second chance. This doesn’t have any impact on your gameplay. After you’re done with this, you will receive the Butterfly of Benevolence Rare Amulet, the Butterfly of Benevolence Rare Trinket, 5000 XP, and 225 Mon.
