Find out how to start the quest The Yokai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where to find the targets, and what rewards you’ll gain for completing this quest.

How to start The Yokai

You can start The Yokai by talking to a monk named Mamushi in Yamashiro. He’ll be at Nyoiji Daiji Temple in the Hills of Meeting, east of Kyoto. This quest becomes available during Act 2 of the game.

Mamushi is a monk who specializes in dealing with yokai (Japanese cryptids). Much to his disappointment, many of the yokai he investigates can be explained through purely mundane means.

Wanting to retire, he’ll send you to investigate the last of the yokai rumors. You’ll need to track down the following yokai: Kappa, Suika no Bakemono, Yuki Onna, Oshiroi Baba, Taka Nyudo, and a Daitengu.

Suika no Bakemono

The Suika no Bakemono is a yokai that appears as a samurai with a melon for a head. Villages in Izumi Settsu have seen these yokai fighting one another, so you must go to Suika Lands in northern Izumi Settsu to investigate.

These yokai happen to be two very passionate farmers, fighting one another in a yearly tradition. The winner of this duel will have the better melon harvest of that year. Talk to them, pick your preferred melon, then defeat the other to be declared “Melon Lord” and complete this objective.

Kappa

Kappa have been spotted near a haunted village in Yamashiro’s Genbu Highlands. These mischievous (and sometimes malicious) creatures bear a resemblance to a turtle with a depression in their head containing water.

You’ll find the kappa southwest of Kuramadera Temple and east of the Haunted Tatarigami Village in northeastern Yamashiro.

When you find the kappa, follow them as they run away and taunt you. You’ll be led into the Tatarigami Village which is full of bandits. Kill all the bandits then talk to the kappa.

As it turns out, these are just children who made a deal with the bandits. They would get food in exchange for pretending to be kappa and scare people away from the village.

Yuki Onna

The Yuki Onna can be found at Kawachi Kaza-ana Cave in eastern Omi, right between the Ibu Highlands and Suzuka Foothills. The Yuki Onna (snow woman) is believed to be a spirit that preys on humans (particularly men) to consume their life force. The Yuki Onna can only be found in winter.

When you run into the Yuki Onna, you’ll might think that this is a beautiful albino woman chilling out in the snow. If you go into the cave, you can find a room with a pile of dead men. With that discovery, she’s far from innocent and must be assassinated.

Upon defeating the murderous (and likely cannibalistic) woman, you’ll gain the following Legendary Katana and Engraving:

Violet Night

Daitengu

The Daitengu is found at Arima Onsen in southern Harima. It’ll be a short trip northeast of Kakogawa Estuary. Daitengu are often depicted as having human, bird, and monkey traits, living an ascetic lifestyle in the wilderness.

The Daitengu will be hostile to you on-sight and will attack you. Be sure to interrupt him with abilities as he kneels over to heal himself with bandages. This yokai appears to be a warrior driven to madness from extensive solitude.

If you haven’t been to Arima Onsen before, be sure to loot the legendary chest here to pick up the following kusarigama and engraving:

Oshiroi Baba

An Oshiroi Baba has been spotted wailing and screaming in Yamato’s Nara Heartland. She’ll be found near a ruined house northeast of Katsuragi and southeast of Koriyama. The tips say she’s only seen after dark, but it appears she can also be seen during the day.

The Oshiroi Baba is said to be a spirit that appears as an old woman with white face powder, typically requesting makeup and sake from travellers. Unfortunately, this Oshiroi Baba is hostile and will attempt to kill you if you get to close.

This turns out to be a crazy old woman looking to kill her husband’s murderer. Fortunately, she’s lucid enough to know that attacking random people isn’t a good idea and will agree to stop these shenanigans.

Taka Nyudo

The Taka Nyudo is found at Kabasaka Village in The Silver Lands, Tamba. This yokai is a giant that’s supposed to grow in proportion to how fast you look up at him.

The Taka Nyudo has taken someone hostage and he’s intent on killing her. Defeat him and don’t get his by his kanabo. Talk to Chitose, the woman with the striking blue eyes that was being held hostage, to complete this objective.

Return to Mamushi

With all the yokai rumors dealt with, return to Mamushi at Nyoiji Daiji Temple, Yamashiro. Going inside the temple will reveal that he’s been murdered by Chitose, the woman you rescued from the Taka Nyudo.

As it turns out, she’s an actual yokai (more specifically an Ao Andon). The Ao Andon is a spirit that is manifested and feeds off the fears of people who summon it. So I guess the Taka Nyudo we killed was one of her victims seeking vengeance… whoops…

The obvious choice here is to kill her as this is something we’ve been trying to do the whole quest, kill an actual yokai. With her defeated, you’ll complete the quest The Yokai.

Completing this quest will unlock the Critical Insight Shinobi Passive for Naoe, and the Level Headed Bow Passive for Yasuke.
