What is Gold used for in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Gold is a rare resource that you can use to upgrade your gear without consuming materials and mon. When you visit the blacksmith, you’ll have the option to pay with materials or using one gold piece. When using gold, the upgrade will bring the selected gear up to your current level.
Due to the scarcity of this material, it can be intimidating to use as you might be wondering if you’re wasting it. It’s good practice to gradually upgrade your favorite weapon, armor, or amulet/trinket with standard materials and mon.
Ideally, you’ll want to hang onto the gold until your mid 40’s or high 50’s. By this point, you’ll have a wider variety of gear to mix and match for new builds.
With the ability to quickly bring up old gear to your level, you can better take advantage of testing new builds whether it’s critical chance based, affliction focused, or whatever you manage to come up with.
Just be sure to only use gold on Epic or Legendary Gear. Don’t waste gold on rare, uncommon, or common items.
Epic and Legendary items cost more to upgrade than lower rarities, so you want to prioritize your gold for the higher rarities.
How to get Gold
There are several ways, some renewable, some not, some based on RNG. Let’s get into how you can start collecting gold!
Complete Questlines
The following quests give you one gold chunk upon completion:
Kill Outlaws
Each region has a quest that requires you to kill a large number of outlaws. These could be bandits, pirates, ronin, soldiers, you name it. While not listed as a reward in the objective menu, turning in all objectives for these quests grants you one gold chunk.
As we have pointed in our DOs and DONTs guide, you should pick up these quests as soon as you arrive in the region. You don’t need to farm them, unless you desperately need the resources or the gold chunk. You will complete most of them passively while you play the game and do other quests and activities.
Izumi Settsu: Out to Pasture
You can get the quest Out to Pasture by talking to a farmer east of Sakai and west of the Old Kofun. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 bandits in the Izumi Settsu province.
Yamashiro: Chaos or Order
You can find the quest Chaos or Order in northern Kyoto, Yamashiro. The quest giver is west of the Imperial Palace and northeast of the Asukai Clan Domain. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 bandits in the Yamashiro province.
Omi: Restoring Order
Restoring Order can be found south of the Merchant’s Quarters in Azuchi, Omi. The quest giver is a woman in pale green clothes in a garden. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 Akechi Clan warriors in the Omi province.
Harima: Guardian Spirit
Talk to the orphan girl at Itatehyozu Shrine, southeast of Himeji, Harima. This quest will require you to kill 5, 10, then 25 ronin in the Harima province.
Iga: Elder Empathy
The quest Elder Empathy can be found north of Matsu’s House and west of Naoe’s House in the Iga province. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 bandits in the Iga province.
Wakasa: High Seas Haymaker
You’ll get the quest High Seas Haymaker from a man in Obama’s Trading Port. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 pirates in the Wakasa province.
Yamato: Stealing Samurai
A farmer south of Koriyama Castle will give you the quest Stealing Samurai. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 samurai in the Yamato province.
Kii: A Better Path
You’ll get the quest A Better Path from a monk at Kumano Hongu Taisha in Kii. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 outlaws in the Kii province.
Tamba: Accursed Arquebuses
You can get the quest Accursed Arquebuses in northern Kameyama. This quest will require you to kill 25, 50, then 100 teppo wielders in the Tamba province.
Projects
You can get four gold chunks with each of the Shadows Projects. While you won’t get them all in a day, it’s a great source for gold chunks. At the moment, you can get eight gold chunks total from The Legacy and Awakening Projects.
Itinerant Vendors
There are rare Itinerant Vendors that roam around the land. They’ll appear as Port Traders but they’ll be on a road in the middle of nowhere. They will sell Gold to you for 6,640 mon a piece.
A good way to tell them apart from standard Port Traders is that they are Japanese and not Portuguese. If they don’t have the puffy pants and silly hats, they’re likely to sell gold!
This can be an expensive way to get gold, but it’s always good to make some mon in case you run into them. Just keep in mind that they’ll move somewhere else at the end of the season. As to where specifically, it’s not known at this time. Keep an eye out for them as you’re exploring and doing missions!
Samurai Daisho
Samurai Daisho have a very small chance to drop a gold chunk when looted. It’s not a reliable way to get gold, so don’t get your hopes up.
Complete Contracts
There’s a small chance that you can be offered gold as a reward on one of the contract boards. Be sure to check a bounty board in each province when the seasons change to not miss out.
New Game+
If you’ve exhausted many of the previous options, you can get a lot more gold by restarting your adventure with a New Game+. With your Objectives resetting, your assassination targets will give you a gold piece when assassinated.
All legendary chests that you found on your previously playthrough will also give you a piece of gold instead of gear! Between these and the previous activities, you’ll be swimming in gold!
