Bossing is one of Diablo 4 Endgame Activities, and this guide covers everything you need to know to get the most benefit from them and their drops.
What Are Boss Lairs
What was previously called Endgame Bosses or Ladder Bosses is now being changed to Boss Lairs. These Lairs are restructuring the Endgame system to expand it and update their mechanics.
Boss Lairs are broken into three Tiers: Initiate, Greater, and Exalted. These tiers generally reflect the access to, difficulty of, and rewards of the boss.
Initiate Boss Lairs consist of The Beast in Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar. Each Boss of this tier has a chance to drop either a Lair Key for a Greater Boss Lair, or a Stygian Stone, which can be traded in for any Greater Lair Key of our choice.
Greater Boss Lairs consist of Andariel, Duriel, and the Harbinger of Hatred. Defeating these bosses has a chance to spawn a secondary boss encounter that results in an Exalted Lair Boss Key.
Exalted Boss Lairs only consist of Belial, Lord of Lies, at the current time.
How to Access Boss Lairs
All Boss Lairs become accessible starting at Torment 1 Difficulty. This means we’ll need to be Level 60, and have completed Tier 20 of The Pit of the Artificers.
Unlike the previous Boss Ladder system, Boss Lairs do not require a key to enter or initiate the encounter. Instead, these bosses can be freely challenged at any time for no cost other than your time, allowing you to practice an encounter. However, you will need Boss Lair Keys to claim their proper rewards.
Below is a table detailing where each boss Lair is located.
Tier | Boss | Location |
---|---|---|
Initiate | Beast In Ice | Glacial Fissure, Southwest of Kyovashad in Fractured Peaks |
Initiate | Grigoire | Hall of the Penitent, South of Ked Bardu in Dry Steppes |
Initiate | Lord Zir | The Darkened Way, East of Kyovashad in Freatured Peaks |
Initiate | Urivar* | Fields of Judgement, West of Kichuk in Nahantu |
Initiate | Varshan | Malignant Burrow at the Tree of Whispers |
Greater | Andariel | Hanged Man’s Hall, East of Tarsarak in Kehjistan |
Greater | Duriel | Gaping Crevasse, East of Gea Kul in Kehjistan |
Greater | Harbinger of Hatred* | Harbinger’s Den, Southeast of Kurast Docks in Nahantu |
Exalted | Belial, Lord of Lies |
Boss Lair Keys
With Boss Lair Keys no longer being required to initiate the fight, they’ve instead taken on the role of accessing the rewards of the encounter. This doesn’t remove their old prerequisites of having to defeat lower-tier bosses, however.
This, unfortunately, means that Lair Boss Keys are still interwoven with each other, but thankfully, we have a handy graphic that simplifies this web quite nicely, but we’ll provide further clarification
Obtaining Lair Boss Keys
Each of the Lair bosses has their own required key (shown above) to claim loot from their Boss Hoard, or the special reward chest that appears after felling the bosses.
Depending on which Lair Key we’re after, we’ll want to consider different activities as means of acquiring them quickly.
Key | Drops From | Required for |
---|---|---|
Distilled Fear | Nightmare Dungeons** | Beast in Ice’s Hoard |
Living Steel | Tormented Gifts in Helltide** | Grigoire’s Hoard |
Exquisite Blood | Blood Maidens in Helltide** | Lord Zir’s Hoard |
Judicator’s Mask* | Kurast Undercity in Nahantu** | Urivar’s Hoard |
Malignant Heart | World Boss or Legion Events** | Varshan’s Hoard |
Stygian Stone | Chance from Any Initiate Hoard | Any Greater Boss Hoard |
Pincushioned Doll | Beast in Ice or Lord Zir’s Hoard | Andariel’s Hoard |
Shard of Agony | Grigoire or Varshan’s Hoard | Duriel’s Hoard |
Abhorrent Heart* | Urivar’s Hoard | Harbinger of Hatred’s Hoard |
Betrayer’s Husk | Belial Ambush after any Lair Boss is defeated | Belial, Lord of Lies |
** These are recommended activities, Initiate Lair Keys can drop anywhere in smaller quantities.
Boss Lair Reward Lists
When opening a Boss Hoard they will generate several Uniques, based on our Class, Difficulty, and Party Size.
The first Unique dropped this way will always be from the Bosses’ respective Boss Pool, or a smaller subset of uniques that will have a higher chance of dropping from them. In Torment 3 and 4 Difficulty, the first two Uniques will always roll from the Boss Pool.
All other Uniques that drop after the guaranteed Boss Pool rolls will have a 50/50 chance of rolling from the Boss Pool again or a General Unique Pool that seemingly includes all Uniques and Mythics.
Below are tables detailing each boss’s known drop tables, updated for the current Season.

Belial, Lord of Lies
Opening Belial’s Hoard requires 2 Betrayer’s Husks. Betrayer’s Husks can only be acquired by defeating the Belial ambush after defeating any Lair Boss.
Belial’s Boss Hoard is unique in the way it operates. Instead of having its own dedicated Boss Pool, it will instead allow us to select any of the other Boss Pools to roll our loot from. This effectively allows us to still get loot of the Initiate-tier Bosses while also still having the increased odds for Mythics.
It is likely, but unconfirmed, to have a higher Mythic Drop Rate compared to other Boss Hoards.
