A character’s appearance (costume) does not affect their stats. For example, Aviator Mario will have the exact same stats as Cowboy Mario. Stats include:

  • Speed defines how fast your vehicle can go, and the displayed number is an average of how fast you’ll move on different types of roads
  • Acceleration defines how long it takes to reach max speed and the quality of mini-turbos
  • Weight defines how easily you get knocked around by others
  • Handling defines how well your vehicle responds and handles around turns

All but the heaviest and lightest characters also have a minor affinity for a specific type of terrain, smooth surfaces, rough roads, or water; that is, their Speed and Handling will be slightly better if the racetrack has a specific surface.

Read our guide and catalog to all vehicles to learn more about their appearances, and the role terrain specialization plays in Mario Kart World!

Driver Types: Characters vs Creatures

Mario Kart World features 2 types of drivers: characters and creatures. They all have the same types of stats, but they differ their customizability and unlock method.

Characters

Characters all have at least 2 appearances (costumes). They’re typically named humanoid protagonists or major antagonists, and you can usually play or talk to them in other games.

You unlock a given character appearance by consuming the relevant Dash Food item as that character. Dash Foods are the golden bags in drive thrus manned by Yoshis. Many of them are course or region-specific.

For example, if you want to unlock Farmer Luigi, you’ll need to get the Milk item from Moo Moo Farms as Luigi.

Creatures

Creatures are almost always enemies of the Crown. They still follow the same stat rules, but unlike characters, creatures don’t have unique names or multiple costumes.

You unlock a given creature whenever you get transformed into it by the Kamek, the Magikoopa who gets summoned by the purple crystal ball item.

Some transformations can appear all over the world, while others are region-specific and may be part of the same pool as more common enemies. The regions dependencies are logical. For example, you can unlock Peepa by being transformed at Boo Cinema.

Beyond being in the right location, you also need to be in the right place at the right time. You don’t get transformed if you use the Kamek item, so you need to be ahead of whoever uses it and be on the same path that the flying Magikoopa takes when he casts his spell.

I’ve gotten the Kamek item as early as 4th place and typically only see it once or twice per Grand Prix, so you need to be doing pretty well throughout.

You will likely unlock most of the creatures by the time you get triple gold stars on all Grand Prix cups and Knockout Tours, but you can farm by doing the same course over and over again in a custom VS Race.

Notable Missing Drivers

Below, you’ll find a list of prominent drivers absent from Mario Kart World. Most of these have been featured in past Mario Kart games or are logical inclusions based on this roster.

  • Koopalings
  • Dry Bowser
  • Petey Piranha
  • Diddy Kong
  • Baby Pauline
  • More Donkey Kong Appearances
  • More Pauline Appearances
  • More Birdo Appearances
  • More Shy Guy Colors
  • Buzzy Beetle | Spiny | Spike Top
  • Boomerang Bro | Fire Bro
  • Funky Kong

Consequently, these are some of the most likely candidates for drivers that could be added if Mario Kart World receives DLC.

Endonae

Endonae

Endonae is a passionate gamer who's particularly fond of challenging action RPGs and open world games with visceral combat. The closer it is to being a Soulslike, the better. Ranged casters, particularly of the energy or elemental variety, are his bread and butter. Lightsabers are pretty cool, too.
