Claws of Awaji: Dismantling One by One Walkthrough

Siow by Siow|

Learn where to find all of Tomeji’s Captains in the Claws of Awaji DLC for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Despite his strength, Tomeji prefers to hide behind his numerous captains. You must draw them out and assassinate them to lower his defenses.

Finding the Captains

There is a grand total of 14 captains you’ll need to assassinate, but you’ll only start with 4 names. These are Fukushima Mosaku, Hachisuka Norimasa, Amano Buza, and Hasegawa Magobei.

Tomeji's Captains Circle Start

One thing to note is that you don’t have to hunt down all the captains one by one, you can challenge Tomeji at any time but any captains left alive will fight alongside him.

Tomeji and his Captains

Help Civilians

Hovering over the profiles will provide the tooltip “Civilians may give away his position if helped”. So if you see a civilian being harassed by soldiers, helping them might have them reveal a captain’s location.

Emphasis on the “might” as they could also just tell you the location of a chest or another point of interest on the map. Instead you can draw them out by causing some trouble.

Drawing out the Captains

As you travel, a group of soldiers may start attacking you. This is a good chance to find a captain as fighting them and remaining in the area long enough can draw out a captain.

If you hear a horn in the distance and the prompt “Captain Alerted” appears, you’re on the path to taking out one of Tomeji’s captains.

Check out the Hot Spots

The captains patrol the various roads of Awaji so they’ll never have a consistent position for long. You can refer to the following map for areas you can check for the captains.

There is always going to be a captain at the southern end of Yura. It’s an easy place to take down the captains but escaping is a bit trickier due to the multiple witnesses.

If you happen to have the location of a patrolling captain, be quick to reach them. They’ll teleport to another location after an undetermined amount of time, so it’s possible for a captain to be within 100 meters one moment then 2 kilometers the next.

Use Guided Exploration Mode

If you’re finding this task too frustrating, you can go to Options > Gameplay then turn on Guided Exploration Mode. This might take the fun out of the hunt for some, but it’s a great way to pin point available captains.

Unique Captain Mechanics

A few captains stand out as they have unique and dangerous mechanics. Here are some of the more notable ones:

Hachisuka Norimasa and Tozawa Yataro

These two captains share the same mechanic: conditional invulnerability. Their armor bar and health bars are gray and their armor can never break. The only way to damage them is with damaging abilities or making them vulnerable.

Parry their blue attacks and dodge their red attacks to make them vulnerable for a short moment. If you maximize Naoe’s assassination damage with skills and gear, it should be very easy to one shot them with a sneak attack.

Honda Mosuke

Honda Mosuke wields an odachi that sets targets on fire. At a glance you’d think this weapon has a pretty long range, unfortunately its reach is MUCH larger than it appears.

As he swings, it’ll project a sweeping flame which can hit you from a good distance away. Make short work of him through assassinations or keep him incapacitated with damaging abilities.

Kagae Koheji

Kagae Koheji will attack from a distance with a bow, but will switch to a naginata when fighting close range. He can summon a trail of poison gas with his swings, so get out of those gas clouds before you get poisoned.
