Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White and Red #1 (of 4) Review: Very unique style and decent story

The first issue of Star Wars: Boba Fett: Black, White and Red is officially out. Here are my thoughts and experience reading it.

The Boba Fett we all love

The first issue of Boba Fett (Black, White & Red) shows our favorite Bounty Hunter taking on what many would call an impossible job; to him, it’s just another day. In just 34 pages, we see him face crime lords, rebels, and Imperials.

He isn’t loyal to anyone, but that goes both ways. Being a lonewolf in the underworld comes with heavy risks, and this issue is a perfect example of it. Those who are clients can become enemies without any remorse. Boba Fett isn’t surprised at all; it’s almost as if he’s expecting it to happen eventually.

This version of Boba Fett is what many of us would love to see in a series or even a movie. Coldheaded, deadly, smart, and resourceful. Even when “defeated”, he never loses his cool. He’s prepared for every scenario and has the experience to pull off any task.

I like that we got to see multiple locations, factions and characters. While their appearances are short due to the format, it’s nice to see how many things get connected in a smooth way. Even if they don’t have a dialogue, seeing extra characters make the scene feel bigger.

Easter Eggs

There are a few subtle easter eggs that made me so happy to see. My favorite one is the ship that looks like a Sith Fury Interceptor from Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The second one is also from SWTOR. On the top left of this panel we can see the Eradicator Mask, one of the most memorable armor pieces of the game.

Last but not least is the BD-1 droids that appear in the rebels’ station. As a fan of Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor I’m always thrilled to see any BD model. Seeing them next to Boba Fett and trying to imagine an interaction between the two makes me giggle.

Final thoughts

Reading a comic that only has black, white and red colors is a new experience for me. It caught me off guard, but I adjusted after just a few pages. The choice of colors is done incredibly well. The red is great to emphasize certain things, while the black and white give life to the environments, characters, and ships.

This is a good start for this mini-series. It’s not amazing, but I wouldn’t expect it to be, considering this is just the beginning. Stakes weren’t too high, and while the risks could be considered high for any regular bounty hunter, for Boba Fett, it’s just another day.

I want to see the events of this issue have ramifications that will put Boba Fett in a very dire situation. One of the downsides of comics is that we know the main character won’t die, and that eliminates any potential stress, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be exciting.

This was an enjoyable read, though I hope that the following issue takes the intensity to the next level. I’m eager to see what new job Boba Fett is going to pull off!

Plot summary (spoilers)

Boba Fett begins this comic series by infiltrating the Imperial prison of Sterna IV. This is the same type of prison Cassian Andor escaped in Season 1 of Andor.

Fett’s goal is not to save a specific prisoner, but to bring him to Tusk, a crime lord whose base of operations is located on Ergeshui.

Breaking into Sterna IV put a target on his back; just as quickly as he got to Ergeshui, he was betrayed and delivered to the Galactic Empire. He was offered a deal; he must find a prominent thief named Bantan Jabar, who has a hard drive with vital information to the Empire. In exchange, his transgressions will be forgiven.

On his way, Fett is intercepted by a bunch of rebels. These rebels are not like most; these are the ones who do the dirty and questionable jobs. They offer Fett another deal, twice what the Empire promised. Boba Fett hasn’t much choice, as he is outnumbered and outgunned.

Boba Fett finds his target hiding on the moon of a volcanic planet. Jabar is of the Besalisk species, known for their four arms, huge size, and strength. Even then, Jabar is subdued easily by the experienced bounty hunter.

Now it’s time to deliver what he promised to both the Empire and the Rebels. In the most Boba Fett way, he makes the Imperial officer delete his record, threatening to blow them to pieces. Just in time before the rebels arrive at the same coordinates.

He did his job, got his record cleared, and left rebels and imperials fighting for the hard drive. Boba Fett couldn’t care less about who got it in the end. For him, this was just another job.
