How to start The Way of the Yari
To gain access to this mission, you’ll first need to find your way to Ishikari Plain in the Golden Foothills. Once you gain access, you can travel west to Modaiwa Island and interact with the training spear inside the arena.

Modaiwa Island is easy to get to and there will be a shoal you can use to reach thhe island. Once you’re there, look for the makeshift arena and interact with the training yari.

The Yari Master will appear and believes you’re a bounty hunter looking to claim his bounty. Fight him with the Dual Katanas and he’ll give in. Once things are sorted out, he’ll agree to train Atsu, starting The Way of the Yari.
Breakfast
For the first lesson, the Yari Master will take Atsu to the shore where she must spear three fish with the training spear. When a fish is about to jump, you’ll see white splashes in the water.
Try as you might, spearing these lively fish is more difficult than it looks. You’ll only be able to spear one of them after missing or jabbing several fish.

Lunch
The Yari Master will instruct Atsu that she must maintain better control of her wrists if she’s going to improve with the Yari.
This next session is easy as all you need to do is follow the dotted lines on your Touch Pad to create the sumi-e.

Once the sumi-e is made, you must get lunch by spearing three fish. Like before, you’ll need to watch for the white splashes that appear before a fish jumps. Don’t strike until the moment the fish begins to fall back down.

After enjoying a nice meal, it’s time for some real training with the Yari. The Yari Master will teach Atsu the Typhoon Kick. This is the charged Heavy Attack of the Yari where Atsu propels herself into an enemy, kicking and knocking them down.

Dinner
After a long day of training, it’s time for some dinner. Follow the Yari Master and you’ll find some unexpected dinner guests, Oni Raiders. This where you learn what the Yari counters.
The Yari is effective against kusarigama (the sickle with a ball and chain) and the twin kama (twin sickles). The group ahead will have twin kama and katanas, so take this opportunity to practice against twin kama with the Yari’s heavy attacks.

With the raiders defeated, the Yari Master will grant you your own Yari. While the mission may be over, there’s still more to learn about the Yari.

The Yari Master needs to rebuild his new dojo, train new recruits, and a blacksmith. If you help him with this, he’ll continue your training with the Yari.
