Learn how to infiltrate the Oni’s Castle in Ghost of Yotei. Atsu and Jubei sneak into the castle through an abandoned mine shaft, but this castle will not go down easily. The Oni is a tough fight and this walkthrough will show you how to fight him.

How to start The Tale of the Oni

After Atsu and Jubei tracked down Mad Goro at the Azure Wind Shrine, he told them about an abandoned mine that leads into the Oni’s castle. You must meet Jubei on the western coast.

Look for the campfire where Jubei is roasting fish.Talk to Jubei to start a cutscene where you’ll take a boat into a cave.

Before continuing any further, it’ll be incredibly useful to unlock the Perfect Parry ability if you haven’t done so already.

Climb up to Ishikari Castle

Go through the mineshaft and head towards the waterfall and climb up the wall. Keep an eye out for any ore you can harvest as this abandoned mine is full of them.

When you reach the top of the cave, you’ll find Mad Goro’s old camp. It turns out, he likes to write haiku in his spare time. Pick up the Oni’s Flame at the camp if you need it then follow Jubei further into the cave.

Mad Goro's Haiku

Continue making your way down the mine shaft until you reach a large room with old scaffolding. Jubei will help you climb up the ledge. Grapple onto the support beam and swing to the other side.

When you are at the scaffolding, look for the red flag and grapple this point to create an opening for Jubei.

Continue down the path to find more scaffolding. Jump up to the suspended bamboo beam and jump your way to the climbable rocks on the wall. Loot the large chest at the top for some Oni Raider Masks.

Squeeze your way outside and jump onto the suspended wooden platforms and beams to find some rocks you can climb.

Following this path will lead you to an Oni Raider. Assassinate them or knock them off the cliff, then enter the tunnel.

Free the Matsumae Clan Samurai

Going down the tunnel will lead you to a quarry. Inside there are multiple raiders overseeing the slave labor of the samurai. Defeat the raiders here and free the samurai.

It would be easier if you use a bow to take out the isolated raiders and assassinate the rest.

After killing the raiders, the samurai will now fight by your side. Pry open the door with Jubei and lead the samurai into battle.

Defeat the Oni Raiders

Fight your way out of the quarry and continue adding more samurai to your ranks. Once you get outside, defeat the Oni Raiders to continue with the mission.

This part gets very hectic and you must be able to drop your attacks to dodge or parry numerous incoming attacks. Your priority targets should be the grenadiers with the lanterns, archers, and kanabo wielders.

Jubei must help free the other prisoners, leaving Atsu to fight the Oni on her own. You’ll run into your old friend Kanta the Jailer. Defeat the two grenadiers accompanying him first, them defeat Kanta.

Defeat Kanta and his Grenadiers

At the castle’s main entrance, you’ll find supplies outside. Take this time to restock on arrows, Oni’s Flame charges, and sake. Open the door when you’re ready to fight the Oni.

The Oni Boss Fight

The Oni wields an odachi that gives him incredible reach with attacks that can drain the majority of your health in one swing. Dodging and rolling is your friend in this fight as he uses many unblockable attacks.

Phase One

He is always pushing the offense, so dodging backwards will help you evade his initial unblockable swings.

If his hand glows with a red glint, dodge to the side otherwise he’ll grab you by the neck and throw you to the ground.

Don’t drop your guard if you see a blue glint. His blue glint attacks will often attack in groups of two. In this stance, he’s about to make two quick uppercut attacks.

If he makes the following stance, his first attack will be delayed, followed by two quick attacks.

Perfect Parry is great into this combo as this one hurts if you fail to parry or dodge it. Disrupt his flow of attacks with Perfect Parry by blocking the moment his odachi would make contact.

If you get to far, he’ll enter the following stance where he’s holding his odachi high and parallel to the ground. He does this when he’s about to dash attack towards you.

When his health is low enough, he’ll grab Atsu’s neck and a cutscene will start. Much like last time, he chucks you out the window. Only this time, he’s making sure you don’t escape.

Phase Two

The Oni is using his previous combos but is adding more attacks too them. He’ll try to disarm you after some of his combos.

Get in a lightly charged heavy attack against the yellow glint attacks before he finishes his swings. Be quick as he attacks very swiftly with his disarming attack.

His most deadly combo is an extension of a previous combo. When you see him in this stance, he’ll start with a delayed attack, followed by four quick attacks, and finishes with an unblockable attack.

Like last time, muster your courage and go for perfect parries to interrupt his combo. This six attack combo can easily kill you if you’re not careful.

If you see him stomp his foot on the ground with a blue glint, he’s going to make two quick attacks, a delayed third attack, and finishing off with a disarming attack.

It could also be a flurry of six quick attacks, all of which can be parried. Be prepared for either scenario.

As he loses health and it begins to rain, he’ll start using his Oni’s Flame Odachi to create two lines of fire. Be mindful of your footing until the fire goes out.

The Oni’s Defeat

When defeated, he’ll be forced to crawl away only to have Atsu and Jubei execute him simultaneously. The Oni is no more, leaving Lord Saito without a castle and his general.

After the defeat of the Oni, your Onyro Armor will be upgraded. You’ll also receive The Oni’s Mask. This mask cannot be worn with a helmet and offers no stats or bonuses.

The Oni's Mask Gear

If you haven’t already killed them, you should continue your hunt of the Kitsune, and the Saito Brothers. Be sure to visit the Gift Altar for supplies!
