How to get the Armor of the Undying in Ghost of Yotei: Overview and Stats

This guide will show you what the Armor of the Undying looks like, what buffs it provides, and how to get it in Ghost of Yotei!

Cosmetic Appearance Tiers

The Armor of the Undying is obtainable by all players in Ghost of Yotei. It’s a full set of samurai armor (a gusoku) and the first one players can get in the game. It does not have a surcoat (a jinbaori) but upgraded tiers come with a cape and, eventally, fur inlays.

Summit’s Snow Dye

Summit’s Snow is the default dye for the Armor of the Undying featuring a pristine white and black combination with small red and blue accents.

Mountain Air Dye

Despite its natural-sounding name, Mountain Air features a mixture of artificial blue and green colors with small white accents.

Jade Dragon Dye

Jade Dragon combines jade green with bits of black and gold. Its masks do not have a unique dye because they just use the same color scheme as Summit’s Snow.

Gilded Pride Dye

Gilded Pride combines a blinding gold with hot orange and silver accents. That hot orange color seems to be what ties it to the Crimson Dye House in Ishikari Plain. I like to use the Tier IV mask with Summit’s Snow to make it pop a bit more.

Honestly, it feels way too fancy to get this in only the second area of the game, especially when everyone aside from a couple of samurai from Clan Matsumae are wearing them, but it still looks sick!

Armor Effects

Armor of the Undying rewards you for using the correct weapon against your opponent. The game refers to this as being “weapon aligned”, but it refers to things like using Dual Katanas against a Yari (spear) or using a Yari against Sickles.

Tier I

  • If weapon aligned, Staggering enemies restores a minor amount of Health.
  • If weapon aligned, the window to perform Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge is increased by a minor amount.
  • If weapon aligned, Focus Attacks have a minor chance to increase Stagger damage.

Tier II

  • If weapon aligned, Staggering enemies restores a major amount of Health.
  • If weapon aligned, the window to perform Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge is increased by a minor amount.
  • If weapon aligned, Focus Attacks have a minor chance to increase Stagger damage.

Tier III

  • If weapon aligned, Staggering enemies restores a major amount of Health.
  • If weapon aligned, the window to perform Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge is increased by a moderate amount.
  • If weapon aligned, Focus Attacks have a minor chance to increase Stagger damage.

Tier IV

  • If weapon aligned, Staggering enemies restores a major amount of Health.
  • If weapon aligned, the window to perform Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge is increased by a moderate amount.
  • If weapon aligned, Focus Attacks have a moderate chance to increase Stagger damage.

How to get Armor of the Undying

You can obtain the Armor of the Undying as your reward for completing the Mythic Tale “The Undying Samurai” in Ishikari Plains.

Locate the Storyteller in Ishikari Plain

You’ll need to speak to the Storyteller to initiate the quest. There should be a lotus flower marked on your map in the northern part of Ishikari Plain telling you to search the area for the storyteller. He’s located at Storyteller’s Rest, slightly east of Masked Man’s Quarry.

Wind Chimes Scavenger Hunt

The Storyteller tells you to find 4 Wind Chimes planted on corpses scattered across the northern fields of Ishikari Plain. You need the chimes to summon the Undying Samurai.

The search area on the map is pretty huge, so you need to rely on the chimes (or this guide) to tell you where the next one is.

The wind blows in the direction of the next chime, so you hold the chime out by swiping on the touch pad and head in the direction where the bell is ringing and the blue cloth is twirling the most.

Wind Chime 1

The first Wind Chime (and attached corpse) is so close the Storyteller can probably smell it from his camp, just head north and grab the chime.

Wind Chime 2

The second Wind Chime is located to the west of Nakagoya Spring near the ledge of a small cliff.

Wind Chime 3

The third Wind Chime is attached to a corpse dangling from a tree near Stone Jaw Coast.

When you get close, you’ll get a button prompt to use your grappling hook. The body will fall down to a lower ledge, but that’s fine because he’s already dead.

Wind Chime 4

There’s a scavenger picking over the body with the fourth Wind Chime at Rumoi River, you’ll need to deal with him before you can grab the chime.

Reaching the Undying Samurai

Once you have all 4 Wind Chimes, the wind will point you to the suspiciously unmarked peninsula due west of the Matsumae Encampment. There’s an Ainu Finding at the edge, but you’re here for the walking corpse, not some trinket!

There’s a grapple point you can use to descend from the cliff. Follow the path down to all the blue and white flags.

Drop Down Point 2

Fight the Undying Samurai

Once you make it to the bottom, you’ll need to hang the bells on their hooks. Doing so will summon the Undying Samurai.

Defeating him will give you the Armor of the Undying. Good luck! It’s much easier to deal with his wooden shield once you’ve unlocked Oni’s Flame.

How Outfits work in Ghost of Yotei

In Ghost of Yotei, you can equip a helmet, a mask, armor, shamisen, and saddle as your outfit. Typically, only armor affects your performance in combat.

The other pieces are are purely for fashion, with a few exceptions. The rest of your combat performance is determined by your equipped charms, which have no effect on appearance.

Armor usually offers three different buffs in combat. Most sets can be upgraded three times (tier I to tier IV) by employing the services of an Armorer, like Ginji. Upgrading armor costs coin and resources, and doing so improves the strength of the perks it provides.

Upgrades also add more details and elements to the armor, including a adding a mask or helmet at tier III, and can choose which upgrade tier you want Atsu to wear independently of the effects.

For example, if you have Taro’s Armor upgraded to tier IV, you can benefit from tier IV while still make it look like Atsu is wearing the tier II version.

Most outfit pieces are dyeable, allowing you to change their color scheme. Dyes are always tied to a specific outfit piece, so you can’t just dye anything you want. Armors usually come with a helmet and/or mask, and they can use the same dyes.

If a piece isn’t directly affiliated with an armor, it may not be possible to dye it to match. Many different vendors sell dyes and you can exchange them for flowers you pick throughout Ezo. They often sell a mask that matches the dye so you can get something to match the dye you just bought.

You can also change how your weapons look using [Weapon Type] Kits, which are equipped to your weapons like dyes but alter their apperance to a similar extent to how outfits alter Atsu’s appearance.

Ghost of Yotei does not have a transmog system, so Atsu’s appearance will match her combat capabilities. The only things you can change are the worn upgrade tier of the armor, eqiupped hat and/or mask, and their color schemes via dyes.
