How to start The Tale of the Kitsune
To start this mission, you’ll first need to find the Kitsune’s Wolfsbane Garden. After escaping with the help of Oyuki, you must find her in eastern Teshio Ridge. She’ll be underneath a ginko tree playing her shamisen.
Talk to her to confront her about her past as the Kitsune. Despite her unwillingness to fight and her offer to help take down the Yotei Six, Atsu seeks revenge for the death of her mother.
Kitsune Boss Fight: Judgement Day
While fast, you can block and parry many of Oyuki’s attacks, giving the impression that she’s holding back.
Her most basic combo attack is when she swings her chain vertically and forward. This combo is made up of three basic attacks.
If she begins swinging horizontally, she’ll make two basic attacks followed by an unblockable attack. Parry or block the first two, then dodge the last unblockable attack.
If she kneels down holding her kama with a blue glint, she’s going to dash attack and end up behind you. Turn around quickly to prevent any attacks from behind.
Upon reaching half health, she’ll surrender and offer Atsu her revenge, or a chance to learn her shinobi ways and how to resist the Kitsune’s toxin.
Learning to Listen
Follow Oyuki uphill to begin your listening training. Hold R3 to listen for sounds. When activated, your vision will gray and sound sources will have a white glow around them.
Continue following Oyuki’s instructions to find her while hidden, then follow her into the house and pick up the incense.
Tend to the graves with Oyuki and she’ll share her history as the Kitsune, including her branding and departure of the Yotei Six.
Listening Practice on the Ambush
On the following day, follow Oyuki on your horse to ambush site. Listen to search for the Nine Tails hidden in the bushes.
This ability will be a good way to prevent ambushes in the future if you expect shinobi are hiding within plants or pots.
Using the Smoke Bomb
Oyuki will give you a new quickfire weapon, the Smoke Bomb. This is a non-damaging bomb that provides cover. This allows you to assassinate opponents or flee.
Do note that the Assassinate in smoke only works on weaker enemies. Tougher enemies such as brutes will instead receive a critical hit.
Defeat the remaining shinobi to look for clues as to where they came from. Go over and loot the bodies to learn that they smell of rotting vegetables, leading you to a tannery.
The Abandoned Village Ambush
When you reach the village, use your Listen ability to find the shinobi hidden in the village. This ability has a limited range, so use it throughout the village as you kill the shinobi to prevent surprise attacks.
One of the houses has a trail of blood leading to a door. Inside is a brute but the important part is the purple supply chest right outside. Be sure to loot it after killing the brute.
When the shinobi are defeated, check the area for any supplies and join Oyuki at the campfire. Start a fire and cook the fish to start a cutscene.
On the following day, follow Oyuke back to the ginko tree and light the braziers around the cemetery. These braziers are laced with the toxin that the Kitsune uses and will be used to build up a resistance.
Kitsune Boss Fight: Rise of the Kitsune
For the first part of this fight, Oyuki will use the same moves and combos as before. After she takes some damage, the hallucinogenic effects of the toxin kick in.
Oyuki will start to use different combos at this stage. Don’t get thrown off by the sudden transitions to hallucinations and reality.
One change she makes to her combos is when she swings her chain vertically for a normal attack. This becomes a four attack combo with two normal attacks, followed by two blue glint attacks where she kicks then slashes at you.
A new combo Oyuki uses is she’ll swing her chain vertically with a blue glint. This is a blue glint, normal, and unblockable attack combo.
If she slides towards you, she’s going to attack with four quick attacks. These are very quick so be quick to block or parry.
When her health gets low, Oyuki will modify her slide attack combo. When she slides in, she’ll make three normal attacks and a blue glint attack where she launches her chain at you.
Parry this attack or if you need to dodge, dodge to the side instead of backwards to the amount of reach this attack has.
After defeating Oyuki, all you need to do left is finish the cutscene, write a song by selecting the given options, and you’ll complete The Tale of the Kitsune.
All that’s left is to return to the Red Crane Inn to begin your final hunt for Dojun and put an end to the Kitsune once and for all.
