The Jaws of Jakku takes us back to where we met Rey. In search for answers, Rey, Poe, Finn, and BB-8 meet someone very similar to her.
A fun side adventure
The best way to describe this audiobook is that it feels like watching an unimportant episode of Star Wars Rebels or The Clone Wars.
This is not an illustrated story. The images are just for reference.
It takes the main characters (Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8) and places them in a unique situation that is worth telling.
Throughout the story, they meet some locals who are currently going through tough times. As it’s usual with these types of stories, it doesn’t take too long before the heroes end up helping the main character of this story, who happens to be a young girl trying to help her family.
What makes this a little different is that everything happens through the perspective of this local girl. She is having her own adventure with Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8, full of excitement and danger.
All of that is well described in an overly enthusiastic way, which I think is very fitting of a young girl from Jakku who knows nothing about the galaxy.
The most important parts of it happen in the underground tunnels of Jakku. A place filled with predators, inflammable gases, and perpetual darkness.
Imagining all that happens in underground tunnels was very easy, mainly because we already got to see similar tunnels in The Rise of Skywalker.
Some Star Wars books introduce new villains to make things more interesting, but don’t expect that with The Jaws of Jakku. The villains are First Order Officers who just want to earn points with the higher-ups to earn a promotion. Pretty much, like most of the low-ranking Imperials who appear in Star Wars shows.
One of the few surprises I had was the fact that a few secondary characters have their own development. It is very simple, but it’s still nice to see how the author cared about that aspect and did something despite how short this story is.
For better or worse, that doesn’t apply to Finn or Poe. They’re just secondary characters and good friends who support Rey in her journey to become a Jedi, but they don’t bring much to the table.
My favorite part was BB-8 going rogue. I wish this idea were explored in the near future because it could lead to some very interesting and chaotic events.
Rey and the girl are very similar to each other and that helps both of them to understand their situation through a different perspective. It’s a nice reminder that sometimes what matters most is not what happens to us but how we deal with it.
Who is who?
My biggest frustration with this audiobook comes from the narrator. I had a very hard time distinguishing which character was speaking because her voice pitch and cadence remained very similar for most of the female characters.
I got used to it after one hour, but that shouldn’t be the case because the total duration is 3 hours and 53 minutes. Spending a quarter of the total duration wondering who is saying what was incredibly annoying.
Reading the book while listening is the obvious solution, but it’s not possible. This is an Audible exclusive.
All I could do was pay attention and rewind so as not to lose track. Audio versions of Star Wars books usually last between 13-18 hours. I’m so happy this only lasts a fraction of that; it would be so frustrating.
Not everything is negative; Helen Sadler does the best impression of Rey that I’ve ever heard. She is perfect to voice the character, and I hope to hear her in future stories. Also, the sound effects and music fit the story pretty well.
Should you get it
Poe, Finn, Rey, and BB-8 are the same characters before and after this story. The plot is decent but very inconsequential in the big picture. Continuing my comparison with the animated shows, this is like a filler episode.
Under other normal circumstances, I wouldn’t recommend spending money on this. Luckily for you, this one is completely free for all Audible users. If you’re looking for a new, uncomplicated story to spend your evening, this is the perfect candidate.
If stories with high stakes and nerve-wracking plots are what you want in a Star Wars story, then this one is definitely not for you.
