How to start The Reckoning
To start The Reckoning, you’ll need to capture The Spider at the Tamura Estate. Following this is a short mission called A Wolf’s Pack.
A Wolf’s Pack
This mission is a short roleplay one where Atsu spends quality time with her brother, niece, and Oyuki. You teach Kiku about sword fighting, gather and cook mushrooms, and make a song.
Meet Jubei at Matsumae Castle
After A Wolf’s Pack, meet Jubei at Matsumae Castle to begin your plan of luring in the Dragon with the Spider’s execution. He’ll be in the Map Room of the tenshu with Commander Wada.
Escort the Spider to his execution pyre and there will be something in the distance. Pull out your spyglass and observe the war ships coming your way. Lord Saito himself has joined the assault on Matsumae Castle.
The Dragon Boss Fight
After the cutscene with Saito attacking Matsumae Castle, you’ll be able to fight The Dragon along with The Spider. Like his father, the Dragon uses a variety of weapons including the katana, naginata, and pistol.
As he attacks, he’ll be pushing your forward which can corner you into the edge of the arena. Keep your back towards the center of the arena if you can so you have the option to dodge backwards.
Avoid shots from the Saito Brothers
As soon as the battle starts, the Dragon will extend his right hand. This signals his brother to take a shot at you. He will use this throughout the fight and you won’t always have the Spider in view, so dodge shortly after he gives this signal.
If you’re far away after the Spider shoots you, the Dragon will shoot you with his pistol. If you’re close enough, he’ll instead attack you with a melee weapon.
The Dragon will also use his pistol between his combos or more particularly, if you stray too far. He’s a fast shot so you’re better off rolling instead of dodging to ensure you avoid the bullet.
To minimize the amount of shots he takes at you, always try to fight him in melee range. If you’re up to the task, fire your own pistol before he gets his shot off.
Alternatively if you’re quick and close enough, a melee attack will interrupt his pistol shot at you.
Early Fight Katana Combos
From the very start, the Dragon is extremely aggressive and will require good reaction times to beat. Don’t expect him to get any less aggressive as the fight goes on.
Seven Normal Attack Combo
If he starts with an overhead swing and no glint, he’ll do a quick set of seven slashes and thrusts. This isn’t particularly hard to dodge or parry, but blocking too long can be detrimental.
Blue Glint Dash Attack
If the Dragon holds his katana in one hand parallel to the ground, he’s going to dash and make a lunge attack. This attack can cover just about the entire distance of the arena.
Three Unblockable Attack Combo
When he’s preparing an overhead slash and his katana is behind him, the Dragon will make three unblockable slashes.
Blue Glint Mixed Combo
When the Dragon holds his katana with one hand in front of his face, he’s about to make two swift blue glint attacks, delay, blue glint attack, and another delay followed by an unblockable attack.
Mid Fight Combos
When the Dragon gets down to around 75% health, he’ll lock swords with Atsu and then switch to his naginata.
Before going over his naginata combos, you should be aware of the explosive shots the Spider now shoots at you.
Disarming Explosives
The Spider shoots delayed explosives at you with the Focus mark. Don’t bother using a focus attack on these as being within the explosion radius disarms you. Avoid them and continue fighting the Dragon.
Blue Glint Naginata Combo
When the Dragon holds his Naginata almost vertically in front of him, he’s about to use a four attack combo. All of these attacks are blue glint attacks.
Blue Glint Leg Sweep Combo
Another basic blue glint combo the Dragon makes is two leg sweeps, followed by two upward swings.
Blue Glint Naginata Dash Attack
Similar to his katana dash attack, the Dragon will hold his naginata over his head with a blue glint before making a long range dash attack.
Weapon Switch Combo
When the Dragon has the naginata to his right with a blue glint, he’ll make two blue glint attacks followed by two unblockable katana attacks and swap to the katana.
Naginata Pistol Combo
The Dragon is rather unpredictable as he may start with a blue glint stance similar to his Weapon Switch combo, but instead only make one blue glint attack followed up by a pistol shot. Always be on your guard and prepared for either scenario.
Late Fight Combos
For the most part, the Dragon uses all his previous combos but works in some cheap tricks. The Spider will start to shoot at you more often, sometimes without his brother giving the command to do so.
If you’re facing away from the Spider, keep an eye out for the white circle on the sides of your screen to know when a shot is coming.
The Dragon kicks the Disarming Explosives
As he gets more damaged, the Dragon will begin to kick the disarming explosives towards you. Your best bet is to roll out of the way to keep your weapons.
If you’re fast and brave enough, you can use a focus attack against the Dragon while he’s kicking to disarm him. You’ll likely be disarmed as well, but you can pick up his dropped weapon and throw it back at him.
Delayed Blue Glint Naginata Combo
When the Dragon bends his knees and holds his naginata almost parallel to his body with a blue glint, he’s using a delayed combo.
This is three successive attacks after which he’ll back off, look like he’s done, only to swing in one more swing after you presumably dropped your guard.
Pistol and Explosive Combo
Another cheap trick the Dragon works in is that he’ll have his brother shoot a disarming explosive at you. After which, the Dragon shoots his pistol at you to stagger you as you get blown up.
If you’re far away enough, he might even work in a second pistol shot. This combo can easily tear away at your health if you’re not careful, just dodge backwards if they do this.
Defeat Saito’s Forces
When the Dragon is defeated, the Spider will run away in fear and leave his men to fight you in his place. Unfortunately for them, you’ll have access to Ghost Stance the moment the cutscene is over.
You must now fight your way through Saito’s forces and defeat any remaining forces in the courtyard. From there you need to fight your way to find and save your family.
When you reach the gate leading to the tenshu, a cutscene will start. Jubei, Oyuki, and Kiku are nowhere to be found.
You’ll then find yourself at the stairs leading to Seianji Temple. You’ll find Kiku at the campsite where you spent the night prior.
Escape Oshima Coast
Your final task is to follow the wind and help Kiku escape Oshima coast. Eventually you’ll find yourself back at Atsu’s home. Talk to Kiku near the tree and lead her inside.
After some more cutscenes, you’ll complete both the mission and Chapter II. You’ll begin the final chapter, Chapter III: The Cost of Revenge.
The only possible lead to find Jubei and Oyuki is the Spider, but you’ll need to find out where he’s hiding if you want to get any answers.
