Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White and Red #2 Review: Like a filler episode

The second issue of Star Wars: Boba Fett: Black, White and Red is out. Here are my thoughts and experience reading it.

Yet another bounty hunter story

The second issue of Boba Fett – Black, White and Red takes us to Meddan. This is the first time we see this place in Star Wars, but it appears to be another very populated planet with the usual shady characters and underworld businesses. Think of Coruscant or Nar Shaddaa.

As we know, Boba Fett is one of the most determined bounty hunters in the galaxy. Nothing can prevent him from finishing the job. Not credits, conflicts between other parties, and certainly not other bounty hunters.

His prey is Samu Mavolak, a man who has earned a reputation for being incredibly hard to catch. After owing money to every person who has ever met him, he developed the skill of running away from everyone. He even managed to trick Boba Fett, at least until someone quickly revealed his ingenious ruse.

Ceezee meets Boba

Boba Fett might be incredibly dangerous, but he’s not a monster. Boba Fett shows humanity towards the man he’s hunting down. For a moment, I almost thought that the story was about Din Djarin.

We have already seen Boba Fett hunt down countless wanted individuals. This small touch made the story feel a bit different. Otherwise, it’s no different from reading about any other bounty hunter.

Easter eggs

Samu Mavolak is a Zeltron, a humanoid species known for its red skin. Their skin turns a deeper red when they get angry.

Zeltrons have appeared a few times in Star Wars despite being created in 1970. The most recent one is probably Ric Farazi, a journalist who appeared in Phase II of the High Republic era.

Ceezee is an RA-7 protocol droid who is into some shady business. In order to give a droid an appearance that matches its occupancy, they gave it an eye patch. It’s a funny but clever way to make a droid look like a pirate.

Final Thoughts

The more pages I read, the more I love this style. Having black, white, and red as the only colors works very well for Boba Fett and others in his line of work. I doubt it’d be the same for a story that featured Jedi or rebels.

In terms of story, this was a step down from the previous issue. It felt like a filler episode of a Star Wars series. No connection to anything known. Just a bounty hunter doing bounty hunter things with no surprises in between.

Perhaps this and the previous issue will be connected in issues 3 and 4. That would make things a lot interesting because having four isolated stories with no connection to anything else feels like wasted potential in 2025.

Don’t get me wrong, it was entertaining, but I feel that Boba Fett needs to get a real challenge in the next one.

Plot summary (spoilers)

Boba Fett arrives at Meddan, looking for Samu the Scurrier. A man who is wanted dead or alive by a lot of people. This man is notable for being extremely good at running away. Boba Fett almost takes the wrong guy by falling for a false hologram, but a droid named Ceezee points out the trick.

After Samu gets lost in the crowd, Boba Fett, someone who looks just like Samu, his sister. She knows that many people are after his brother, which will eventually end in Samu getting killed.

She doesn’t want that for her brother, so she offers to give Samu’s location if Boba Fett takes him to a system where he’ll be imprisoned rather than killed. After accepting her conditions, Boba Fett receives the coordinates where Samu is meeting someone later that day.

Meanwhile, a group of Houks who are after Samu capture and torture Ceezee to get his location. Boba Fett contacts Samu and convinces himself to surrender before the Houks get to him. Samu agrees to meet Boba Fett in a few hours.

When Samu arrives, the Houks have Samu’s son as a hostage. Before they can kill Samu and his son, Boba Fett arrives and quickly eliminates the three Houks without breaking a sweat.

Before leaving, Samu asks Boba Fett for a moment with his son to say goodbye. Boba Fett accepts. A few minutes later, both board the ship and head to Krodos 4.
