Ghost of Yotei Shamisen Guide: Every Shamisen Appearance and Song

Endonae by Endonae|

A complete catalog of all 4 Shamisen Dyes and all 7 Songs in Ghost of Yotei, detailing their designs, locations, and how to get them.

All Shamisen Dyes

Shamisen Dyes allow you to customize the appearance of Atsu’s Shamisen instrument. The designs are different enough that they’re effectively different instruments, but they use the dye system.

Just like Armor Dyes, Shamisen Dyes have no impact on gameplay. Given the instrument’s prominence in the story, one would think there would be more variety in their appearance, and it seems most logical to offer one at each dye house, but that is not the case.

We’ve included a brief visual description of each Shamisen Dye appearance and notable features. Hope you like yellow and brown!

Wandering Wind

Wandering Wind is made of shiny dark wood with sliver peg caps and a faded yellow pattern on the covering.

Wandering Wind is the default dye for the Shamisen that you get at the very beginning of the game.

Reflections in Fall

Reflections in Fall features unpolished light brown wood and dark brown pegs, a fabric covering with a blue stripe over autumn leaves, along with black tassels dangling near the top and bottom of the strings.

You can purchase Reflections in Fall from Taro the Scavenger. He shows up to scavenge after you’ve cleared out a Yotei Six Camp and has a permanent location below Dead Man’s Tree in Tokachi Range.

Hidden Beauty

Hidden Beauty features unpolished light brown wood and dark brown pegs, a bit of red fabric tied tight near the top, and faded brown and yellow coverings. There’s also a dark yellow tassel at the bottom with red beads that match the fabric at the top.

You can purchase Hidden Beauty from Taro the Scavenger in Oshima Coast, likely after helping him with the refugees from Tamura Estate following “To Catch a Spider“.

A Path of Flowers

A Path of Flowers is a primarily red Shamisen with little bits of black for contrast and a single small red tassel by the top of the strings.

You receive A Path of Flowers from Oyuki for completing the quest “A Land Reforged” at Red Crane Inn, which requires you to do all the major quests in Teshio Ridge.

All Shamisen Songs

Aside from Atsu’s Song, she can learn to play 7 different Shamisen Songs, each associated with a different type of point of interest in Ghost of Yotei. Playing a given song changes the direction of the wind to lead you to the nearest point of interest associated with that song.

Song of Shrines

Song of Shrines will lead you to the nearest Shrine or Fox Den in Ezo. Shrines are those pretty nature walks that give you a Charm at the end.

You learn Song of Shrines from a random traveler you can encounter randomly while camping. You can eventually get him to show up by just sitting down to camp, getting back up, and then camping in the same spot.

Song of Spirit

Song of Spirit directs you to the nearest Bamboo Strike in Ezo. Bamboo Strikes increase your max Spirit or grant out of combat Spirit regeneration.

You are taught Song of Spirit by Master Heijiro at his Garden in the Northwest region of Yotei Grasslands. Theres a memory there you have to do first.

Song of Revenge

Song of Revenge directs you to the nearest Yotei Six Camp in Ezo.

You are taught Song of Revenge by a musician in Tokachi Range who has a camp southeast of Huranui’s Rest Inn.

Song of Well-Being

Song of Well-Being directs you to the nearest Hot Spring, which increases your max health.

You learn Song of Well-Being after completing some Shamisen Practice at a spot on a cliff near the coast of Ishikari Plain north of Rumoi River.

Song of the Wolf

Song of the Wolf directs you to the nearest Wolf Den and will summon your wolf friend when played near a Yotei Six Camp.

You learn Song of the Wolf and teach it to your friend as soon as you complete your 4th Wolf Den anywhere in Ezo.

Song of the Ainu

Song of the Ainu directs you to the nearest Ainu item in Ezo, crucial for upgrading the Robes of Sitturaynu.

You are taught the Song of the Ainu by the Ainu Musician at Cupket Hills Campsite in Nayoro Wilds after completing the quest “Soul of an Instrument” in Tokachi Range.

Soul of an Instrument starts at Ainu Musician’s Camp northwest of the Saito Encampment in Tokachi Range. You have to go get a Smooth Stone from the nearby Mountain Pool for him.

Song of Vanity

You learn the Song of Vanity after completing some Shamisen Practice at a spot on top of the mountain west of the Red Crane Inn in Teshio Ridge.
