VULKK evaluates and scores video games out of 10 and TV Series, Books, and Comics out of 5. Our final scores are the average of category ratings included in our review card, so you can see exactly where the number comes from. The reviews explain in detail how we arrive at that number.
How We Score
- Categories: The reviewer rates each category as a whole number. The final verdict is the average, rounded to the first decimal (8.7, or 4.6 for example).
- Strengths and Weaknesses: Our review cards list the main strong and weak sides, which are explained in detail in the review body.
- No Cross-Comparison: Our scores are not compared across genres or over the years. A high score means the work excels at what it sets out to do.
- Price: We discuss prices if and where appropriate, but it does not affect our score.
| Label | Video Games | TV, Books, Comics | What it means: |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masterpiece | 10 | 5 | A new standard. Flaws don’t matter. |
| Outstanding | 9.0 → 9.9 | 4.5 → 4.9 | Exceptional. Recommended to almost anyone. |
| Great | 8.0 → 8.9 | 4.0 → 4.4 | Excellent, with a few noticeable issues. |
| Good | 7.0 → 7.9 | 3.5 → 3.9 | Enjoyable, but held back by clear weaknesses. |
| Decent | 6.0 → 6.9 | 3.0 → 3.4 | Worth it if the premise appeals to you. |
| Average | 5.0 → 5.9 | 2.5 → 2.9 | Functional, forgettable or uneven. |
| Poor | 4.0 → 4.9 | 2.0 → 2.4 | More problems than strengths. Most likely to avoid. |
| Bad | 3.0 → 3.9 | 1.5 → 1.9 | Serious failures in design and execution. Avoid. |
| Terrible | 1.0 → 2.9 | 1.0 → 1.4 | Broken or fundamentally unenjoyable. Avoid. |
Games
- Scale: Each title is scored in categories rated 1 to 10. The categories fit the game, such as Story, Performance, Design, Gameplay, and Mechanics.
- Always the Complete Experience: We exhaust every game – campaign, side content, exploration, everything available before we write our review.
- Platforms and Controls: PC is our main platform. We always test both controller and keyboard + mouse options if the game supports them. Our review card lists all platforms the game is available on.
- Versions: We review the game as it is at the time our review is published. If major changes are introduced through multiple patches and updates over an extended period of time, we may publish a new article. We don’t change our original review and scores.
TV Series
- Scale: Each category is rated 1 to 5 stars, including Story, Character Depth, Surprise or Suspense Factors, Visuals, Music, Pace, and others, depending on the format and style of the series we cover.
- Complete Experience: We watch every episode before scoring. We are usually very familiar with the universe the series belongs to. In the rare case where we review something with origins we are unfamiliar with, we clearly state our lack of previous experience at the top of the review.
Books and Comics
- Scale: Each category is rated 1 to 5 stars, including pillars such as Story, Character Depth, Suspense, World Building, Flow, and others.
- Complete Experience: We read every book and comic end to end. We also always listen to the audiobook, if one is available and accessible to us.
Independence
- Never Sponsored: Our reviews are always 100% our own thoughts and experiences. We never accept payment for a review and no developer, publisher or advertiser can influence our scores.
- Review Copies: We sometimes receive free copies from publishers or PR agencies and we always disclose it at the top of our review. A review copy never guarantees coverage or influences our score.
- No Previews: We never share reviews or scores with publishers before publication.
- Affiliate Links: Sometimes we include affiliate links to products we review. The links that have an affiliate tag are always clearly labeled. Affiliate links never affect our score.
- Reviewers: Our reviews are written and scored by a named reviewer and checked by an editor. Reviewers don’t cover work they were personally involved in or have a stake in. We sometimes publish multi-perspective reviews, where a team of our authors shares their own experience and scores individually, which we then combine into a final score.
- Corrections: If we make a factual error, we correct it with a dated note at the end of the review.
