It is a bad idea to modify your Host Files in order to attempt to resolve possible Patching Issues.
The update from Tait Watson came in the form of a Dev Post today. Here’s the original message:
We have gotten word from our Customer Support and Patcher teams that some people are changing their host files in order to attempt to resolve patching issues. Please do not do this. This “troubleshooting step” originated from players and does not always work and can cause further problems due to getting corrupted files from cached servers. Additionally, if you edit your host files, our CS teams cannot help you get it back into a good state.
If you’re having trouble patching, please reach out to CS for assistance instead of following unverified and potentially complicating steps. You can reach them at:

UPDATE 1 on the PATCHING ISSUES:
Ongoing Patching Issues | 09.01.2015, 06:58 PM
As many of you have guessed, we have identified that the cause of the ongoing patching issues for some EU-based user are ISP related, and you will need to contact your ISP and let them know that download requests to cdn-patch.swtor.com are being routed to invalid download (edge) servers.
We will continue investigating to find any potential workarounds (but please don’t change your host file). Once we have a proven workaround, we will post it here.
Thank you for your understanding!
UPDATE 2 on the PATCHING ISSUES:
Ongoing Patching Issues | 09.01.2015, 09:09 PM
We believe that the issues with ISPs rerouting traffic to invalid servers is mostly resolved, based on information communicated to us by our ISP. You should see a marked improvement.
If you’re still having trouble, contact our Customer Support department for further assistance.
