Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars The Last Jedi recently pointed out that the secret of Rey’s parents may not be fully revealed yet and their story could continue with surprising and shocking reveals in Episode IX!
With the release of The Force Awakens the story of Rey’s lineage was one of the most discussed topics and fans theorized anything from Luke, to Obi-wan, even the Solo family got in the mix somehow.
The Truth about Rey’s Parents from The Last Jedi was… unexpected to many fans. Most of us were hoping for a big and strong connection with a family we would recognize from the Star Wars Universe. Kylo Ren, however, told Rey that she is basically nobody and comes from nowhere. Her parents were nothing but drunk junk traders from the planet of Jakku.
Rey’s Parents story is still clouded in mystery
Rian Johnson came to the rescue to help us keep the speculations and… well.. hopes that Rey may still be sharing a blood connection with a famous character from the previous movies or the other Canon content released by Disney. Hell, why not even take something from the Legends?
Disney’s clear aim with this reveal is to show us, the audience, that anything is possible and everyone can become special without them having important family relations in the Star Wars universe. However, Rian’s words:
The easy thing would be, ‘Yes, your parents are so and so and here’s your place in the world. There you go.’ The hardest thing she could hear would be […] ‘No, you’re not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You’re going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet.’
only mean to tell us that Kylo might be misleading Rey to gain advantage and win her over to the Dark Side. Rian also added that “Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film (JJ Abrams is).”
Now, where do you think Episode IX will take us? Actress Daisy Ridley already stated that this will be her final appearance as Rey in the Star Wars franchise (cough for now). This must mean that we will see Rey’s story wrapped up with a decent ending in 2019?
By the way, Episode IX is scheduled for a release on 20th December 2019. Star Wars, however, will be back on the big screen this Spring – on 25th May, with the Solo: A Star Wars Movie (the Han Solo stand-alone movie)!
