DONTNOD just released the first big patch to their game. Vampyr Update 1.04 brings a lot of fixes and is now available for all platforms – PC, Xbox One and PS4.
Vampyr is a single player action role-playing game from third-person perspective. It released on 5th of June 2018 and was met with somewhat mixed reviews and opinions. While I personally enjoyed it (and still do), the game does have its shortcomings and some times you can definitely tell it has been developed by a small studio with limited resources. This, however, doesn’t take away from the entertainment and fun time if you enjoy these types of games.
Being a fan of vampire movies and stories in general, I got the game as soon as it came out and must say it delivered on almost all aspects. The combat was a little lacking, but the storytelling was strong enough to keep me going (even the long dialogues with those silly clumsy, crazy and drunk NPCs).
That’s enough to get you familiar with what the game is about. I have a little more at the bottom of the article if you want more details about Vampyr and are not afraid of minor spoilers from the early story. Now, let’s turn our attention to the first (of many) updates the developers have in store for this title.
Thanks for your help last week with the Beta patch to ensure a smooth release today. This first update mainly contains bug fixes of issues you reported in the past weeks, as well as a few features suggested here.

VAMPYR’S STORY
The plot relates how Jonathan Reid, a doctor who has turned into a vampire, comes to terms with his undead condition as he is torn between the Hippocratic Oath and his newfound bloodthirsty nature. Although some boss battles are mandatory, most combat can be avoided, and the player is under no obligation to kill innocents to finish the game. Dialogue options are used for conversation and hunting prey to feed on, which replenishes strength and levels up the lead character. Weapons and supernatural abilities are employed while combatting enemies. London serves as a fictionalised semi-open world composed of four districts, which can all be destroyed based on the player’s actions.
Taking place in London during the 1918 Spanish flu, the developer researched the setting by travelling to London and consulting history books and documentaries. The visuals were made with fictional and factual reference points in mind. Olivier Deriviere composed the original score and infused it with industrial music. The game was met with mixed reviews from critics, who praised the primary game mechanic, setting, character development, and voice acting, but criticised the combat, overall narrative, technical problems, aspects of the choice-based system, and animations.
