What better way to kick of the week but with a recap of the new info about Anthem that surfaced in the past few days thanks to Mark Darrah – BioWare’s executive producer for the studio’s upcoming Action co-op RPG Anthem Mark was, as always, very active on Twitter, answering all kinds of questions and teasing the fans. This week we learned how loot depends on the player’s level and previous experience, what amounts of customizations we might get to do on our Javelins, how limited underwater gameplay is, passive and active skill trees hints and more.
The game is divided into solo experience, when you are in Fort Tarsis and your forward mobile base – the Strider, and shared multiplayer world when you are out on an adventure in the wilderness.
In Fort Tarsis you can skip all additional conversations and roleplaying elements to shorten the time spent between missions (some of you might find that very helpful and handy, I know).
Out in the shared world, however, the multiplayer conversations are non-skippable. BioWare gives you the choice to decide how much you want to interact with the characters in Tarsis, but because the outside world is shared between all players, what you hear, see and experience, cannot be altered. It is the same for all players – both inside your team and not. This means you cannot skip narrative elements, you will not have different choices and dialogues while grouped with other players. Whatever happens, is determined by your mission giver and personal choices are not available in multiplayer.
Fort Tarsis can and will transform based on your choices and actions. I mean the game will change, not just the NPCs and their reactions towards you, but even the environment can be changed following certain events. The visual changes cannot happen through decorations though. Such a feature is not planned at the moment. Maybe at some point after the game’s launch.
Anthem’s Underwater environment is,
sadly,
not a combat zone!
A fan asked Mark Darrah about the Underwater gameplay. Unfortunately, combat is not possible while swimming. There are creatures roaming around, but you cannot tackle them while the deeps. Some hidden entrances, as we saw in the first gameplay video walkthrough, are located under water.
Moving from the depths of Anthem all the way to the sky. Mark confirmed that there is a physical limit how high you can fly in the game. He called it “flight ceiling”.
When you bring a low-level Javelin as a high level pilot – for example your suit is level 2, but your pilot is 22, the loot that will drop for you is matched to your level. It’s also based on the Javelin you are using on themission (but other things will drop too). This should take care of the catching-up process with gear for your alternative exosuits. Some gear rewards are level and/or Javelin type gated though. You might pick up something you cannot equip until you get to that level. I assume Mark is hinting at some special high-grade (tier) weapons and armor.
You can run (some of) the missions multiple times. If they happen to have a special reward for you in your first playthrough, the next time you complete it, a different type of loot will be granted, so you won’t be wasting your time without feeling properly rewarded.

Remember, you start the game with just the Ranger Javelin suit and will unlock and earn the other 3 through missions and gameplay. Not much has been revealed and even less confirmed yet, but it looks like that the different Javelins might be given to you by representatives of the different factions in Fort Tarsis.
Speaking of Skills, there are, of course passive abilities you can unlock. So far it is known that you will unlock and upgrade your character’s piloting skills with a shared skill tree, which will be universal for all of your Javelins. Based on what passive and active Freelancer skills you have, will alter the performance of the exosuit you are wearing. This means you have to be wise when picking your Javelin type and loadout and try to match your personal Freelancer skill tree with the exosuit you plan to take for a walk today.
You can craft a ton of
useful things
for your Javelin,
but you
wont be able
to give them
custom names
There wont be customize-able Jetpacks and flight effects at launch, but Mark confirmed that the team is very interested in doing this later on. On the topic of custom appearances, custom imprints will not be allowed due to the high risk of harassment and copyright concerns.
Tell me, are you eager to get your hands on Anthem and see if the game will live up to your expectations? Actually, what are your expectations of BioWare’s brand new IP?
