Ubisoft offers a new approach to questing and exploration in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Exploration Mode. But is this the correct way to play?
Аssassin’s Creed: Odyssey allowс you to choose between Guided Mode or Exploration Mode. The former is well known from Origins, but the latter is a new addition and an upgrade, if I may say so, to the gameplay. Here’s why!
The Guided Mode is the traditional experience for most RPGs these days. You are basically taken by hand and led by the game designers from one point to another. Your map has a ton of useful markers to help you get to the places you need or want to visit.
There’s nothing wrong with that. Odyssey is a much bigger game and more complex on several levels compared to its predecessor – Origins. Some times (or all the times) a little guidance would go a long way to prevent you from feeling bored and even lost.
The new gameplay mode – Exploration Mode – is going to free you up from these annoying markers that force you to run from point A to point B constantly.
Many players already acknowledged the advantages of roaming in Ancient Greece freely. Not just that, but you will also have to pay attention to the places you visit, buildings that surround you, important environmental details will stick out more into your mind.
The game designers are confident that Exploration Mode is the way to go if you want to fully experience the world they have created. There’s logic in that. Can you remember how many times you stopped to admire something in Origins while running towards your next objective, marked on the map for you?
Ubisoft is attempting something new with this game. It is not the typical Assassin’s Creed experience in terms of how your decisions here will matter and your actions will alter the outcome of missions and global events around Ancient Greece.
Being a fully functional RPG with meaningful choices before you almost at any step, creates an additional playtime sink. Stacking the Exploration Mode on top of that, means that the time required for you to complete the game’s main story would be significantly higher.
And let’s not forget all of the side activities that are available, some perhaps even hidden and waiting for you to discover on your own. Odyssey’s map is considerably larger than what we had in Origin’s.
I personally play the game in Exploration Mode and switch to Guided on certain cases, when I am in a hurry (busy schedule, D’OH!).
What about you? Which of the two modes are you using and why?
