What is the Best Starting Horse in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey? Why does Markos offer you 3 mounts with different perks, which is right for you?
There are a total of three mounts you can choose from at the very start of your journey. Their owner Markos will tell you of a few perks each one has, but which is the best starting horse?
Almost immediately as you start your adventure (after the Leonidas Intro and the first mission), your friend Markos will give you a choice to pick a mount. He offers you three and if you ask him of their qualities, he’ll provide you with a short description for each horse.
You aren’t required to ask Markos for his opinion on the horses. These are side-conversations and are marked with white in the dialogue during the cinematic. You can skip them.
I strongly urge you to go through as many of these as possible. Especially if you play with the Exploration Mode active. The “white lines” (generally speaking) are among the best ways for you to get clues as to what is where in the game.
The grey horse on the left is the Skyros. Markos describes it as a sturdy stock and tells you that it can climb to mountain passes like a goat. There are a lot of mountains in the game and you will spend most of the time climbing peaks and adventuring into the wild to explore hidden tombs and ancient structures spread all over Greece.
The brown horse in the middle is “a beauty” from Thessalonia. It’s known to be courageous. In theory this means the horse should behave better when you are being chased or shot at with arrows by the various enemy NPCs you will encounter.
The white horse on the right is a Makedonian breed. It’s supposed to be a battle horse. A true warrior’s horse. It is advertised as the horse that should deliver best performance when you are fighting on its back.
The thing is that there are no actual stats revealed for the three horses. It doesn’t really matter which one you pick. Your choice should be more about visuals and inner feelings.
Each one of the horses behaves in a similar manner in any situation that I tried and it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
It’s all down to your personal preferences. If there is indeed some small difference, it’s negligible. Pick the one that you like the most and know that very soon you will be able to get different skins to change the appearance of your mount.
For the record, I picked the Skyros (grey) one, because of its appearance. I also got a nice upgraded skin as a gift for it, so now my horse looks more advanced. It’s performance is still the same, of course.
