The Punisher Season 2 Drops in January 2019 on Netflix

The Punisher will blast his way into January, 2019 when Netflix announced that they will release season 2 on the streamingservice. Will The Punisher suffer the same fate as Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage?

The Punisher created Jigsaw

The last time we saw Frank Castle, he was done with his archenemy Billy Russo by smearing his face all over a broken mirror and breaking Billy’s face. What Frank doesn’t know is that he actually created Jigsaw. Jigsaw is one of the rogues of The Punisher. It is however unknown at this time if Jigsaw will be featured in the second season. It would be nice to see someone else be the enemy of The Punisher.

Will it be The Punisher’s swan song?

The bigger question on everyone’s mind however is: Will Netflix also cancel this show after this season has dropped. Netflix notoriously canceled Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil and we are waiting to see if The Punisher and Jessica Jones awaits the same fate.

The conventional theory among fans is that the canceled shows will be rebooted or transferred to Disney’s own streaming service called Disney+.

However,  I am not conviced that that will happen. While the shows all received high praise for their storytelling and action sequences from critics, the generated buzz was substantially less on social media for instance.  Next to that, the actors signed a contract that the characters will not be appear on non Netflix shows for the next two years.

The power is on Social Media

“There is this very real contract with Netflix,” Rutberg said to Inverse. “I had heard 18 months, maybe it’s 2 years. I suppose it’s possible that Marvel could buy them out, but I have not heard so much as a whisper.”

“Fans should know there really is power in social media,” Rutberg says. “That’s how companies like Netflix track the success of these shows: How much people are talking about them on social media. Your tweets and hashtags have power. People are listening.”

Whether the Punisher suffers the same fate remains to be seen. But since we as fans hold at least some power in our hands, I would say: Let’s tweet and share our thoughts about the upcoming season of The Punisher like there is no tomorrow. Let your voice be heard and inspire others to do the same. Marvel’s Punisher deserves it and so do the other shows.

When you think about it, Lucifer was saved by Netflix after fans started their social media campaign and in Young Justice is back after five years. That should give us fans at least some hope of success.
