She-Hulk Episode 4 Review and Breakdown

Manfred by Manfred|

The fourth episode of She-Hulk was invigorating and tied into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 by exploring more use of magic.

Magic started with Wandavision, moved through various TV shows and movies like Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, and now in She-Hulk. What we got from this episode? Let’s do a recap and try to read between the lines with some easter eggs and hints.

Friendship is Magic

The episode starts with a magic act featuring Donny Blaze (mind you Donny and not Johnny also known as the Ghostrider) and he is performing parlor tricks using roses and changing them into different colors from white to red. The audience isn’t impressed at all by his magic.

But when he pulls out the magical sling that is used by students and masters of Doctor Strange and Supreme Sorcerer’s academy and essentially puts an audience member in hell, the audience actually applauds.

The woman in question, Madisynn, had to sell her soul to a guy named Jake to get back to Earth and was dropped off at Wong’s room at the academy in Nepal. She managed to ruin Wong’s night by spoiling The Sopranos, a show he is currently binging.

Wong hears Madisynn’s story and opens a portal to She-Hulk’s office to talk lawsuits about stealing copyrights that have never been registered.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

She-Hulk, startled by the sudden entrance, while updating her dating profile as Jennifer, hears Wong’s case and asks if any of the magical academy has been registered by the books. “The book of Vishanti?” No! The book of American Law, She-Hulk replies.

It turns out that all the magic that is taught at the Academy of the Sorcerer Supreme of the Mystical Arts has no ground to stand on legally because nothing is copyrighted.

Everything done is a common courtesy. That makes a lawsuit very hard. And the opposing team makes light work of Wong’s case.

Even when Madisynn testifies about what happened to her in the demon dimension: It did not convince the judge and Donny Blaze gets to continue his magical con act.

With a little help from my “friends”

Donny Blaze goes back to his club to perform more magic acts. Ofcourse everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. The new girl he picked from the audience sees through his act and even tells him that her friend was here last week and that she had to do unspeakable acts to get back to Earth.

This time Donny opens a portal on the floor and dove came out to lay a small egg in the participant’s hand. The audience is amazed by the magic trick and the new girl looks at the egg that hatches right in front of her face.

She sees a small cute creature come out but the creature is anything but cute and aggressively attacks the new girl and the audience. The creature looks like some sort of gargoyle and when Donny tried to put it back into the dimension it came from, he multiplied and returned with many friends.

Friends who can’t die, friends who grow in size when you kill them, and friends who are insanely aggressive.

Donny Blaze is in despair and can think of only one option: Open a portal to Wong’s place.

There’s no business like She-Hulk business

When Wong looks up, he sees a lot of mini gargoyle-like creatures destroying the magical theatre. Wong tries to control them by throwing magic at them but their strength is in numbers and that number is very high.

So Wong does the next best thing: He opens a portal to She-Hulk to get help. She-Hulk has to break off her date for a wee bit to help Wong defeat the creatures.

She-Hulk’s appearance evens the odds and the creatures are defeated by throwing them through the portal that leads them to icy mountains where the creatures will freeze to death.

Jennifer’s dating life sucks, long live She-Hulk

In the subplot of the show, Jennifer is looking for a date and completes a dating profile. She is hoping to find “the one”.

She goes out on a date with a couple of guys who are all losers. An entrepreneur who doesn’t even know what business he is in and called her a six while leaving her to pay the bill. And another guy who thought of her as a lab rat. She barely got any other dates as Jennifer.

She decides to try again but then as the sensational She-Hulk. And she suddenly had 15 dates. One of them was a doctor and the two had instant chemistry. After Wong returned She-Hulk to her house, the doctor was still waiting for her. The two spend the night together and the next morning she makes breakfast for the two as Jennifer.

The doctor asked who she is and she replied “Jennifer, when I am not in She-Hulk form.” The doctor however didn’t care much and only likes it when she is the sensational She-Hulk.

It adds to Jennifer’s insecurities because her alter ego is more popular than she is.

She-Hulk’s date:

See you in court

Remember Titania? She comes back in the episode without being seen. Titania has trademarked everything She-Hulk. She has done so because if you can’t beat them using force then you go after them in court.

Jennifer is a lawyer but can she defend herself? I am not so sure, I think we will see Daredevil / Matt Murdock defending Jennifer next week. This is going to be interesting and it sucks that we will have to wait another week.

In an interview with TVLine, Ginger Gonzalez had the following to say about the future lawsuit filed by Titania:

Episode 4 ended with superpowered influencer Titania filing a lawsuit against Jen for using the She-Hulk name. Is there some juicy legal action ahead?

Yes, that hot legal action with pens and highlighters that you’ve all been asking for! [Laughs] The show is now definitely switching into what it looks like when you have petty, idiot supervillains and superheroes who are either antagonizing you or need to be represented by you. The thing about working in a superhuman law division is we can represent anyone, so we get comic book characters that haven’t entered the Marvel Universe yet, that you haven’t seen in any of the trailers. And you get to see the idiocy of the ridiculously fun superheroes who have legal trouble and may or may not listen to their attorneys. I’m really excited for people to see these guest stars that are in the comic books.

Magic in the MCU

It’s interesting to see how Marvel establishes magic more and more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And further establishes the character of Wong. We know Wong mostly as the sidekick of Doctor Strange but he is being fleshed out through cameos and bigger roles in the Marvel movies.

Magic is going to be huge in the fifth phase and I wonder where this will lead to. It is, however, too bad that the book of Vishanti was destroyed before we actually saw what the book contained.

The question is going to be: What enemy will we see that we need magic for? And will Morris Walters be able to help shove the magical enemies aside with the help of his daughter? Watch the next episode of She-Hulk as the story continues to unfold.
