Into The Spider-verse is the ultimate Spiderman movie, in my opinion!

(Spoilers) If you haven’t watched Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse yet and still want to then turn around now. This review contains heavy spoilers about major plot-points!!

Into The Spiderverse Official Synopsis

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

The Spiderverse

The movie itself is just amazing. Great voice acting, amazing animation but best of all, we get to see all kinds of Spidermen from all over the multiverse.

We got to see Spiderman who closely resembled the Spiderman from recent years where he is a tech billionare. And we got to see a worn out Spiderman, who’s infamous Parker luck got him so down that he lost his Mary Jane Watson. Spidergwen, she is from recent years and truth be told: She has the best costume!

Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse

Spiderham and Peni Parker with her Spiderbot completed the Multiverse Spiderman. Oh wait, the best Spiderman since Peter Parker. The Spiderman that was the main character of the movie:Miles Morales.

Miles Morales, his origins was so true to the comics that I wasn’t sure if I was reading the comics or really watching that movie.

The Spiderverse Story

The original Spiderman got killed by the Kingpin but before he gets killed he manages to pass on a drive to Miles Morales. Miles got bitten by a spider that gives him the same abilities as Spiderman but with a little extra. He can turn invisible and he has a venom strike. Along with the other Spidermen, mentioned above he goes out to train and defeat the Kingpin once and for all.

The Kingpin of crime

If you are like me and you read the comics and/or watch the Daredevil Netflix TV show, then you have a good idea of where Kingpin is coming from. Kingpin creates a big machine and you think it is to rule the world. But the reality of building his reality machine is to save his wife and kid who died in a car crash years prior to the beginning of the movie. That little extra touch of character development was very touching. It showed that the Kingpin isn’t doing it for greedy reasons or total world domination. He is doing it for love. Ofcourse, he is doing it for the completely wrong reasons and blowing up half the universe isn’t the way but hey, that Kingpin is one of my favorites to be portrayed on screen.  Kingpin is usually portrayed as a greedy businessman who is as cold as ice.

Golden Globes and Future

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
Phil Lord (center left) and Christopher Miller accepted the Golden Globe award for best animated feature for ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ on Jan. 6.

The movie, deservedly, won a Golden Globe for best animated feature. And the directors had some nice things to say to their audience.

“Anyone can wear the mask; everyone is powerful and everyone is necessary, and that is the spirit of the movie,” said Peter Ramsey, who directed with Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman, backstage at the Golden Globes. “We all felt deeply that anyone can have this kind of experience and be this kind of hero. The story of Miles Morales was a way to crystallize all of those feelings into one character.”

“Our favorite part was finding a voice for Miles Morales, with Shameik Moore, and creating something that could stand up to Peter Parker and be unique and different and separate,” added Persichetti.

Following the movie’s success , Sony is currently trying to make The Spiderverse into a big franchise. So think: sequels, Spidergwen and other female characters and a full Spiderham movie. But also think multimedia crossplatform. So games, merchandise and comics.

I suppose you have to milk that proverbial cow. I usually don’t have much against this type of cow milking but only as long as the quality of the product stays the same. I have been an avid reader of comics for almost 30 years now and quality goes up and down. Most notably at the end of the 1990s where Spiderman felt like a chore instead of a story that sucked you in and let you live Spiderman’s life. I hope that that will not be the case with the Spiderverse franchise.

In conclusion

Have you watched the movie? If yes, then what do you make of it? Do you agree with the point of view that , if you are going to turn it into a franchise, then you should totally keep some sort of quality control? And what do you think of the Kingpin being able to feel love after all? Let me know in the comments.
