ANTHEM Problems and Fixes Guide

Vulkk by Vulkk|

This article is dedicated to listing all of the known issues that I have discovered after the release of Anthem. To some of the problems there are workarounds that I myself have tested and/or other users on the internet have shared. Check out the list and see if your issue is here and if there is currently a working solution for it.

Note: This article is updated regularly with new issues and possible fixes for them. Check back later if your problem has no solution yet or if you have found a solution to your own and would like to share it with the Anthem community!

How to get the Anthem Legion of Dawn and Pre-Order rewards

If you are missing the pre-order and/or edition specific rewards when you get Anthem, check if you have purchased the proper edition and when. Some rewards are only available for pre-order.

The rewards are available in the Rewards tab in the in-game store. To get them, follow these steps:

  • Play game up to Prospero Mission
  • Complete Prospero Mission
  • Open Store and go to rewards tab
  • Claim rewards

Unable sign in to your Origin account

The Origin website may currently be overloaded from incoming traffic. If you are unable to sign in, simply keep trying until the system eventually lets you in.

Many players are actively trying to download the game if the first days and weeks post-launch, share the experience with their friends or simply access their account. It is expected for the website to experience issues, especially in peak hours during the Weekend. Similar issues might occur during other big Anthem Updates or other EA/Origin related titles in the future. Don’t rush to blame your system or internet for that.

If you get the “Server Error 500” message, this means the website is overloaded. Simply wait a bit and try again or keep spamming the refresh/reload button until you manage to sign in.

Getting artifacts and flickering when playing Anthem with SLi

BioWare announced official SLi support for Nvidia video cards is coming shortly after launch. Meanwhile, if you have an SLi setup and are having visual and graphical problems in-game, there is a simple solution – turn SLi off and set your machine for a SINGLE GPU only. Here’s how to do that, thanks to Reddit user Lucimia:

  1. Go to Nvidia Control Panel (right-click your desktop)

  2. Go to Manage 3D settings

  3. Go to Program Settings

  4. Find Anthem

  5. Go down to SLI Rendering mode

  6. Change to SINGLE GPU

Anthem wont shut down properly or Can’t start Anthem for a second time in Windows

On PC some times (most times, actually) when you exit Anthem the game may not stop and shut itself down. If you are stuck on a black screen, first try ALT+F4. If it doesn’t work, you can ALT+TAB or press WINDOWS key on your keyboard to get to Desktop. This will minimize the Anthem game window. Then open Task Manager by right-clicking on your windows taskbar. Find the Anthem process and terminate it by right-clicking and choosing “end task” from the menu.

In some cases you may not be able to re-launch Anthem after you have closed it down after your previous game session and you haven’t restarted your PC in between the two. If you click in Origins to play the game and it refuses to start, go to Task Manager, find the Anthem process and terminate it. Then return to Origin and start the game from there again.

How to fix Anthem recording and streaming problems with OBS in Windows 10

There are theories that Anthem causes trouble because of how the game’s full screen mode behaves. This has not been proven yet, though. What you can and must do if you are having issues properly recording the game or live streaming it (stuttering, poor FPS performance etc), make sure you have all of the Windows streaming and recording gaming tools turned off.

Forum user Dedrick has posted a walkthrough on the OBS forums of how to do this: Press Windows + I to open Windows Settings. Choose Gaming. Go through all the tabs listed in the left and turn off Game Bar, Captures and Game Mode.

Experiencing Glitches and Crashes while playing Anthem (without SLi)

Before you blame the game developers for creating a piece of **** (:P), check if you have the latest video drivers. Nvidia just released a new driver specifically tuned for Anthem. I don’t have an AMD card, so I cannot tell how Team Red is doing, but Nvidia’s 418.91 drivers were officially released on February 13 and support Anthem.

On an additional note, Mark Darrah from BioWare confirmed that this driver is causing crashes and/or Anthem not starting on some systems. I personally have been playing the game since Early Access with this driver and have not seen a problem. If you have constant crashes, though, try rolling back to an older version.

UPDATE: Nvidia has rolled out a new driver specifically for Anthem on February 22 – 419.17.

If you experience low Framerates on PC or crashes, check if your PC covers the game’s system requirements.

Picked a non-Ranger Javelin at level 2 and lost the Ranger

The game grants you your first javelin choice at level 2, which happens right after you finish the tutorial of the game. You start with the Ranger there and play through the introductory mission. At level 2 you get to choose a Javelin. This is your FIRST javelin choice and it will be the only exosuit you will be able to pilot until level 8.

If you select a different one than the Ranger, you will LOSE the Ranger. This is not a bug, but intended mechanic. The developers want you to play with only one javelin suit until level 8, when you get a chance to ADD a second one to your roster.

The game even warns you that the choice you make will be saved and used for when you decide to restart the game and play from the beginning.

Choose carefully which javelin exosuit you want to be your first at level 2.

Losing Audio while playing Anthem

A similar issue was present in the Anthem Demos. The devs claimed to have fixed it for live. If it still happens and you lose your audio during gameplay, a possible workaround (suggested on EA HQ Forums) is to switch the audio type from Home Theater, to Stereo, Headphones etc. Keep doing that every time the audio cuts off. This is not an official workadound and may not work for everyone.

A user suggested setting it to “LOGITECH PRO G”, but that would only work if you have a Logitech headset or speakers, obviously.

Another solution is to restart your game every time it happens. This, however, is a major loss of time and progress and is not highly recommended if you are in the middle of a long mission.

This issue is rumored to be fixed with the Patch on February 22, when Anthem launches worldwide. If you are still having it, report your problem.

The issue continued throughout the live release and past. Now the devs claim to have fixed many (or most) of the instances where this could happen and prevent it from happening. The fix is part of the March 9th Update 1.0.3.

Anthem connection problem error updating pilot data, please try again. Error 4445

Several players have reported issues of that kind with their connection to the game being impossible or very unstable. It is likely that this is caused by the overload the servers are experiencing in the first days after the Early Launch and Worldwide Launch. EA suggest you to try these simple steps in order to fix the problem if it is on your end. If these don’t help, you might have to wait for a fix on the servers’ side.

Anthem wont launch at all

If the game refuses to start up, but also doesn’t give you any error messages or clear notifications of the reason, it is likely that a piece of your hardware may not be compatible (outdated) with Anthem.

This has been reported on the EA HQ forums by a few people and they seem to all have older AMD CPUs, which are far below Anthem’s official PC System Requirements.

Unable to bind ALT to a keyboard shortcut in Anthem on PC

Anthem allows you to create a completely customized keybinds setup that fits your own playstyle and needs. However, players have reported that for some reason you cannot use ALT when re-binding keyboard shortcuts. This was, apparently, present in the Anthem Demo build, and is still here in the full game (for now).

A workaround has been suggested by EA HQ user vindawg, but it is reported to not work for everyone in the full game now. Here it is, if you would like to try it:

C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\BioWare\AnthemDemo\settings, open file ProfileOptions_profile and go to GstKeyBinding.Keybindings.ConceptMoveBackward.0.axis 0
GstKeyBinding.Keybindings.ConceptMoveBackward.0.button 56
GstKeyBinding.Keybindings.ConceptMoveBackward.0.mapping 1
GstKeyBinding.Keybindings.ConceptMoveBackward.0.mod 255
GstKeyBinding.Keybindings.ConceptMoveBackward.0.negate 1
I’m binding Alt for backwards so the number is 56 for Alt key, leave the rest alone, save and startup game and your good!

Getting BSOD (Blue-Screen-of-Death) and crashes when playing Anthem

If you are getting BSOD frequently while playing Anthem, there might be a simple solution to fix that – update your BIOS. This workaround was suggested by my good friend and editor of the Marvel and DC categories here on VULKK.com – Manfred. He was having very frequent BSOD events while playing the Anthem Demo a couple of weeks ago and once he updated his BIOS, the issue disappeared completely.

This fix has been reported to help many other players on the EA HQ Forums as well.

Issue with Anthem’s FPS and V-Sync on G-Sync Monitors

If you have a high refresh-rate G-Sync (or Freesync) enabled monitor and you are experiencing problems with the FPS being locked to 60, there is a way to fix this and unlock the full potential of your monitor.

Switch back and forth from Full Screen to Borderless and back again. At the same time also switch V-Sync off and back on. This will unlock the FPS counter if it gets stuck on 60 FPS and refuses to go higher on your high refresh-rate monitor.

How to fix FPS Drops in Anthem

Reddit user u/utkohoc shares a solution that works perfectly for them in resolving both audio issues and FPS, stutter and image freezing:

  1. In your audio drivers UI or whatever it is you have, change the default format to 24bits 44100hz (studio quality) (you can drop it to 16bit 44100) mine was previously set to 96000. i had audio stutters during loading and other weird stuff. might also fix audio drop out. had no issue with audio at all since i changed it.

  2. In your nvidia geforce control panel (not geforce experience) go to manage 3d settings. program settings tab. choose anthem. texture filtering – trilinear optimization ON. texture filtering quality – PERFORMANCE. texture filtering anisotropic sample optimization ON. power management mode – Prefer maximum performance.
(this was wierdly set at optimal power which i think might have been a mess up on nvidia or anthems end leaving it as a default setting? i have never had it on that setting before.)

  3. Go to control panel>system and security>advanced system settings > performance box [settings] > advanced tab>virtual memory [change] make sure your pagefile is set to your SSD and not ur HDD. mine was set to my old hdd and not my ssd where windows and anthem are installed.

Anthem crashing the whole PlayStation 4 system, forcing a rebuild

There is a known-issue that in some isolated cases when Anthem crashes on a PS4, it may force you to not just reboot the game, but the whole system as well as repair its disk as Reddit users often state: “The worst part is when it shuts your console off, it does it as if you pulled the power plug out of the wall. The console has to fix itself as well as repair my external HDD.” – Terry2Toke.

Both EA/BioWare and Sony are aware. A Sony customer support representative even stopped by Reddit to make a post clarifying that this, apparently, is not Sony’s fault and their console is working fine on its own. BioWare is expected to provide a patch soon (as of March 6th) with a fix for that.

Most of the cases where Anthem would completely power off your PlayStation 4 have been caught and fixed with the 1.0.3 Update, announced BioWare. If you continue to experience crashes and other issues, don’t hold back, report them all and describe your problem as best as you can, so the dev team can track these issues and correct it.

How to fix Blurry Areas in Anthem Gameplay and in the menus

After Update 1.0.4 some players started noticing huge blurry areas and unreadable texts in what seems to be random regions on the screen. This appears both in menus and during gameplay. The issue seems to be related to the Geforce Experience In-Game Overlay tool. Simply turn it off and restart the game. I have tested it myself several times and it has worked 100% for me.

Anthem Update 1.1.0 New and Known Issues

The April Update for Anthem was released on April 23. It brought the new stronghold Sunken Cell and along with it came a few nasty new bugs. BioWare has acknowledged them and the devs are now working on solutions for the following issues:

  • Invisible assets or enemies after dying too many times in Sunken Cell stronghold – If a squad wipes 10+ times they may run into this issue.
  • Elite Ash Brutes in this stronghold are entering idle and still move when frozen – This only affects Ash Brutes in this stronghold.
  • DLSS Screen Freeze – For PC players with DLSS enabled, if they play an Arcanist Secrets world quest during freeplay, the screen will freeze upon interacting with the vault. The UI updates, but their exo and the world are stuck in place. During this time, the user is free to move around and play, but nothing will change on screen until the timer is done, at which point everything recovers.
  • Bright white screen in Forge after cutscene – After a cutscene has ended, accessing the Forge in the expedition leads to bright white lighting that covers all but the UI elements. The effect persists in the Forge until the end of the expedition.
  • Lower stats on components, gear and weapons – The current values on some items are incorrect and show a lower value than before the update. This is a visual issue and does not impact stats provided.
  • Vault space – After the 1.1.0 update players may have noticed that the space in their vault has increased or gone over the limit. This was due to a bug being fixed where Ranger items were not properly being taken into account for space. Clearing out items from your vault will fix this issue.

If your issue is not explained here, take a look at the Anthem Demo Problems and Fixes. Some of the old fixes explained there might be valid for the fully released game too.

If you get an error message or experience an issue that is not listed here, report it in the comments below. Someone else, who might have had it may be able to offer help and a solution. I myself will do my best to research it and look for a workaround to help you out.
